20 years ago today, the day the *real* music died....
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Third Stone from the Sun (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMW0t17Ft5o#)
RIP SRV!!!
Mike
Like Hendrix, we'll never see another one like him. His music is as fresh today as the first time i ever heard it... A real trailblazer. RIP SRV.
Thanks, Gasport!
No thanks required, Mike. This is someone who should never be forgotten. I teach guitar and one of my biggest pleasures is teaching his stuff to people who never heard of him before. Especially when you get that student who really gets it and realizes just how important this guy was. [and still IS!]
SRV was a truely Amazing Guitar player, R.I.P.

The thing about him that makes him so unique to me was his ability to *emote* through his guitar playing. I really can't explain it, but I can "feel" emotions sometimes when he plays. Not every song. There's those special moments where he just nails it, and you get goosebumps, and you don't know why. I've heard a bootleg where he does a BB King song called You Done Lost Your Good Thing Now. It's the only time I've heard him play that song, and you can hear him groan before he plays a particularly vicious riff. Just incredible stuff!!
I was fortunate to see him once in concert. The highlight for me was when he sat on the front edge of the stage, bathed in a blue light, and played "Lenny". He just transported us to someplace else for those few minutes.
Here's a pen and ink drawing I did of him soon after he passed.

LOVE that drawing, Mike! You totally captured the ferocity and passion he was capable of emitting on stage. I, too was lucky enough to see him when he toured with Jeff Beck at Madison Square Garden. The man almost defied gravity when playing live. I have NEVER left a concert SO exhausted [and deaf!] as i did that night...simply unexplainable.
