Title: THE MIST
Post by: typhooforme on December 01, 2007, 11:26:53 AM
Nothing like going waaaay off topic on the Universal board here...but I used to be a diehard Stephen King fan.  Still am, of his earlier books.  But I've seldom been entirely happy with how his books have been filmed.  THE MIST has long been a favorite story (novella?) for me, and I wonder how they did putting it on screen.  Anyone see it?  Glad they saw it?  Wish they'd MIST it?

Yeah Rob, that flicks intrigues me enough to take a chance and go and see it. But I want I'm really hoping is good is the Will Smith flick "I Am Legend". Anybody read any early reviews of either film?

It's getting some very nice reviews.

. . . and it contains Max's doppelganger, Toby Jones. Toby's Pa, Freddie Jones is a Hammer alumni as well as being the nasty sideshow hawker in "The Elephant Man".

It's getting some very nice reviews.

Hi folks, I saw the Mist and it is very well done. The director is the same one who did Shawshank and The Green Mile. Both better adaptations of King stories. This one sticks close to the story. The monsters are secondary to the sociological drama playing out with the characters. The CGI effect are used sparingly, which is good at keeping it more believable (or unbelievable). And don't expect a sappy ending because it hits you in the gut. Acting is superb as well.

Most of Mr. King's work I like.  New and old.  I cut my teeth, so to speak, on Salem's Lot when I was in the 5th grade.  That is my favorite novel and the Mist was my favorite novella with The Raft coming in as my favorite short story.

I went opening night to see the Mist trying not to be excited or expecting too much.  What I got was a horror movie that, to me,  ranks up there with John Carpenter's The Thing.  I loved everything about it..........almost.  I won't give the ending away at all but the director went further than King's ending.  I will say it was very emotional.

On the other hand, as a model builder, the creatures in the Mist gives us great opportunities for many cool kits.  If only I could sculpt!

Go see the Mist.  I'd love to be able to talk to another fan of the story about the ending.

My little sister went to see it and all she would tell me was that the ending was difficult to watch. She said some people walked out during the end because they couldn't handle it. Being a long time King fan, now I really want to see it! I hope my blood pressure can take it. I know the director rewrote the ending..do you think it's beneficial to read the original before watching the film?

Hi Marsha,

I'm torn on reading the story before the seeing the movie on this one.  It follows the book fairly well until the ending.  You might want to go in cold and then read the story after seeing the film.

I would have prefered an "open-ended" ending myself. I thought the effects were decent, and some, pretty durn scary (what the heck WAS that giant thing?)

Anyone but me heard the audio version of "The Mist" that came out 15 years ago or so?  I can burn copies if anyne wantes to hear it....

I love King's early stuff, but increasingl;y (in my opinion) his later works seem to run on and on, and have no point )Buick 8, for example).

I liked the effects, the movie's pace was pretty good, but I really disliked the ending.

Almost to the point of "I'd really have to think twice if I wanted to watch this again." hate.

I'm going to see the movie this week. I keep hearing about the movie's ending. Hmmm? Scary, sad, or just dumb? We'll see.

I was liking it early on, but hated (and I mean HATED) the ending so much it wrecked every good thing that came before.

Revealing the ending would be a HUGE spoiler, so I wouldn't do it. See it, and report your feelings about it as well.

I'm interested to know if they did preview screeners, and what the general audiance reactions were?

You mean you won't talk about the giant lobster raping the survivors as the earthquake hits the town? With the cameo appearance by Jack Nicholson as the ghost of Jack Torrance? You're right, you shouldn't reveal that!

I thought it was a great movie. I didn't mind the ending too much, though I agree that the Birds-type ending might have been better. Not sure how well that'd fly with mainstream audiences these days though.

Bizarro Jeff, I had no idea there was an audio version. Is it just like an audio book or more like a radio play? If it's a play, I'd love to hear it.

Yeah, it was a pretty good audio play as I remember.  It was one of those things I miss placed or lost years ago.  Sigh.  I use to listen to it just every once in a while.  If you can find it, it's well worth your time.
