Those are some of the best covers of all time.
Last weekend at the flea market I got Creepy #1 for five bucks. Its just a little worn on the stapled edge.
I have a bunch of Warren mags, too. Maybe if I have time to scan some I'll post 'em, but I'm sure you have 'em too.

That #3 makes me want to look for my own copy. What a creepy, great cover.

I've never gone after the Warren mags as aggressively as I have some of my comic titles and the hot rod related humour mags. I felt I never had to really make a big push on amassing the Warrens since back issues were always sold by Warren so that almost every issue of these has continued to be relatively plentiful. As a result I still need about half the issues, mainly the later numbers.

Great topic Hepcat! I have all issues of Creepy, Eerie and Famous Monsters and will scan some tonight! One of my favorite covers is of Blazing Combat #1 which will be scanned tonight!

That cover of Creepy #3 reminds me of the episode of Night Gallery where the picture keeps changing reflecting the thing coming from the cemetary next door! I can post any cover of Creepy, Eerie or Famous Monsters - anyone have a favorite they would like to see?

I've recently bough a couple Creepys back at a decent price. That #4 is probably my favorite cover. Never had any Blazing Combat but recently bought the big volume reprint. Looks cool.

That's actually the first time I'm feasting my eyes on most of those Famous Monsters covers! The first 25 issues or so are from the first half of the sixties and are very tough to find compared with Creepy, Eerie and Vampirella issues.

Wow! I've never actually seen any of the Favorite Westerns! I just know they were published from house ads in other Warren magazines. And I love the Jack Davis cover art on the second one!

CreepysFan - The mag dealing with the serials was called Screen Thrills Illustrated and ran for ten issues. I will post some cool covers today!

Hepcat - I started collecting comics and magazines in 1959 and haven't stopped!! Actually, I do not do as much collecting as in years past because of many factors but pick and choose what to collect. For instance, I am finishing my run of Superboy comics - but because of the prices and economy it will take a bit longer but I am actually enjoying it more now. I get to sit and read what I collect instead of just stashing it away. As for the Warren's I also started to accumulate them in the early 60s so most of mine are from the newsstand. I would always buy two copies of each comic and magazine - one for reading and one for collecting. That meant I shined a lot of shoes, sold a ton of lemonade and scoured the alleys for bottles to return for cash! Thanks for asking!!

All the 1970's Famous Monsters that I have I got through a subscription back then. I also had all my older brother's 1960's issues which he gave me when I was little and I held onto them and kept them in good shape for forty something years until recently I gave them back to him, so he has them now.
I also have a bunch of Vampirella's, Eerie's and Creepy's that I bought off the newsstands in the '70's.

Great seeing all those early FM's. The first one I snagged from a magazine display was issue 28. Then I ordered a few from the back issues department. I had a subscription in '64 (I think). I kinda bailed when they started reprinting articles like crazy.

Can anyone tell me at what point/issue Creepy starting going more sci-fi fantasy vs horror monster stuff? I think the reason I didn't have near as many issues of Eerie is due to the fact they went that route pretty early as I recall. Probably why I liked the DC horror titles and Marvel reprints better back then.

I'm drooling...

Thanks for the info. I've been buying a few here and there just to read so we're not talking top condition. My issues in the 70's and up I'll probably move along. The couple in the 30's and below I'll hang onto.

I think most issues of Creepy and Eerie had at least one SF story in the mix right from the beginning.

I really wasn't happy when Eerie stated to have continuing characters, though the art in Hunter (Paul Neary?) was very good.

The Bob Burns / Paul Blaisdell effort was a lot of fun. I never saw them at the Atlanta magazine shops back in the day. I know they had some distribution problems. I liked their interior use of duotone, and the Blaisdell covers are amazing.

I know this ain't Warren (I'm soiling the thread!), but it was an interesting also-ran. I noticed that the inside back cover had a nice Mort Drucker illo.

The Charlton titles were obviously lower quality that the Warren publications. Even at that early age I could see that the "black level" (to use modern parlance) was weak in the black and white interior images. But, heck, I'd buy anything with a monster on it! This was my first monster magazine. My older brother had a few such things when I was a bit younger (we're talkin' 1958 or so). I recall being frightened by one of them and tearing it up. I threw the pieces in the woods behind our house to make it "go away"! Jeez, it musta been one of the earliest issues of FM. I was around six years old. As the early 60's dawned I became fascinated by what had initially scared me. I asked my Dad if he would buy me a "monster magazine" (he worked downtown, near the bookstores). This is what he brought home.

I only had the one issue of Monster Mania, but I think it may have lasted another issue or two.  Reminded me a bit of Shriek; which I think was British. I've got three issues of that one. Higher quality paper, etc. Of course, Castle of Frankenstein was the high water mark. The first issue I found of CoF was the "Special Vampire Issue". I remember the Saturday afternoon. A downtown book / magazine store. I scored three mags that day. I left the store feeling like I had just found buried treasure (and indeed I had!). CoF opened up a whole new world of art and cinema. Those full page repros of the work of Virgil Finlay and Hannes Bok had a profound affect on me (as a budding young drawer). That's also where I read about European films I wouldn't see until a few years later...

That 3-D Monsters magazine was on the newstands at exactly the same time as Creepy 1! With my strictly limited financial resources, I had to choose between the two - and I wisely chose the Creepy which of course went on to be a runaway success while 3-D Monsters proved to be an unsuccessful one-shot experiment.

I scored a seemingly unread copy with the 3=D glasses still attached at Dragon Lady on Queen Street West some twenty years ago though!

It was this issue that helped make me a big fan of Christopher Lee's Hammer Studios Dracula flicks:

I'd only seen Horror of Dracula and Scars of Dracula to that point. For reasons I can no longer recall though, I clipped the Christopher Lee picture from the cover at the time. Bummer. It would be a really nice copy otherwise.

Wicked L - Nice Creepys!  Do you know (or does anybody) who the monster is on that '69 Yearbook?  Is it from an old Mexican Monster Movie?

All I can tell you is the cover was done by H.B Harris. Google it and see what you get. All I got was old auctions for the original art and not much as far as source material.

Nice fanzines, CreepysFan!

I have these, too CF... I bought the first one when i first met Zach at a personal appearance he did at a local college in 1988. When i got on line to get Zach's autograph he finally asked where these magazines were all coming from? Turns out the show's promoter had them made up and was selling them in the room adjacent to where Zach was signing without getting his permission first and keeping the profits for himself. Zach wasn't very happy about it, but rather than upset his fans, he didn't make a big deal over of it & continued to sign them for everybody. The next 2 issues were available via mail order. I felt guilty buying them, but i was hungry for any info i could lay my hands on concerning the Cool Ghoul.

No, nothing was ever said [at least to my knowledge] to the promoter in question by Zach. He wasn't just selling the fanzine but also cassette dupes of Zach's early albums along with some other stuff i don't remember. Zach's response to situations like these is to simply never do business with that person ever again. I know for a fact the guy approached him about doing other projects. Zach never gets confrontational about it, he just says ''we'll see'' and then never gets back to the person.

Ya gotta love Corben. One of my fave artists of that era. I would really like to see books with Corben covers be higher priced well.. because it has a Corben cover. The dude deserves his due.

Do I ever wish that I still had all my old Warren Mags! FM, Creepy, Eerie, and Vampirella were my only reading material other than Cinefantastique in the late '60s and early '70s. Alas, mice and water damage got to them all, eventually.

I remember being on vacation in Florida in '75 when the issue of FM came out that revealed Barbara Leigh had been cast as Vampirella for Hammer's movie, complete with photos of her in a Vampirella costume she'd had made for the FM con in NYC. My aunt saw me reading it and acted like she'd caught me reading Playboy! (I was 13 at the time.) She took it from me and took it to my mom. Mom took one look and said, "They wear less than that at the beach," and handed it back to me.

Mom was the one that got me into horror films as a kid. She claims I first saw 1931's "Dracula" & "Frankenstein" when I was just 3, and never had nightmares after watching them. She's 80 now, and it's hard watching her health start to fail. I still think of her taking me to see "The Exorcist" after my dad said I couldn't go. Or her buying me my very first Aurora kit (Superboy & Krypto) when I was just 5 and home sick with a bad cold. And whenever the new FM or Vampirella hit the stands, she made sure I got them.

You're not alone. I think a lot of Frazetta fans were introduced to his work by those covers he did for Warren Publishing. The deal with Warren was probably the best career move that Frank ever made.

The Skywalds have much more graphic covers than do the Warren mags but in general the artwork in the Skywalds is almost on par with that in the Warren mags.

I used to have near full runs of all the Skywald horror line in higher grade back 15-17 years ago. Needed the $ and sold em at prob 1/5th of todays prices. Loved em and on par with early Warren's.

My only one I obtained a few months ago. Soley for hanging the art. Pretty Hammerish IMO.

Gotta love the Skywalds. Great covers guys , especially the early issues. The Heap also had a comic book which I will pick up soon.

CF , to answer your question The Crime Machine only had those two issues. It took me years to track down decent condition ones at a price I was willing to pay. I've seen people asking $50-75 for a single issue in solid fine.

Here are 2 that are even harder to find by World Periodicals from 1971. There is not much info on these and prices are all over the place. Mine are in solid F and the other in VF. Supposedly worth over a C note for both.

Both of these are 52 page B/W reprints of precode Crime with ZERO ads.
The Murder Tales cover is just nasty IMO. You see where she is heading and you know what they did to her.
I LOVE pre-code crime comics and hope you like these.
I wish someone would do some reprint volumes but at least I have my comics on CD collection.

That last mag has a real HORROR TALES, TALES OF VOODOO cover vibe going on - love that style of art!

I think the Murder Tales is a great cover. It's the content I think is kinda nasty. Probably because it's humans to human violence and not some mutated monster ripping the throat out of another monster like the Eerie publication mags , of which I am also a fan.

Sorry. It's a Seaboard not a Skywald publication. It came out in 1975 but only two issues were published. The stories are more pedestrian than those in Vampirella but they're a cut above those in the really trashy magazines that populated the newstands in the seventies.

Nice EP's, Bill - as I've mentioned before, I really dig that artwork - reminds me of the old circus/sideshow banner paintings I'd drool over while lumbering down the fairgrounds midway back in the late 60's -early 70's!!

Isn't the artist Carl Burgos, the creator and artist of the original Human Torch?

I read about his work for  Eerie Publications in Mike Howlett's fascinating book on those magazines.

Great covers guys. One thing I have to say tho is that with the Hammer and Curtis mags many times the cover was the prize and the contents anywhere from ok to "meh". I had near full runs of them and after rereading them a couple times just let them go. Again,the covers are great but I doubt the wife wants to be seeing framed vampires ,zombies , werewolves and ghouls in the bathroom or kitchen nicely framed.

I think it began publishing in the late 80's. I subscribed in the 90's. It went to full color a few years ago. I was in a bit of a money crunch at some point and let the subscription run out. It contained some very detailed and comprehensive articles concerning "fantastic cinema". I'll scan a handful of the better covers and post 'em later.

Kelly Freas was to MAD what Basil Gogos was to Famous Monsters. Those magazine covers  jumped right off the racks at you back then. Made it difficult to pay attention to any of the others displayed along side them. True masters of their craft. Thanks Hep for yet another virtual feast for the eyes. I have such fond memories of these old mags & poring thru my older brother's stacks of MAD.

Ditto on Freas. He was a huge influence on me at an early age. Some of his sci-fi work was a bit corny, but the Mad covers (and a few interiors) were amazing...

Yes, Freas was one of the best.  I have to mention one of my all time favorites: Virgil Finlay.   His line drawing was the tops.  He and Chesley Bonestell (SF) were the best.

BTW, this is a horrible scan with the magazine still in the plastic bag on my broken scanner. I'll use my professional scanner in the coming weeks. But I'm so happy about this, I just needed to share it now.

Wow! I take it that the print run of that magazine was not much more than 400 copies! Warren rushed that ashcan edition to press with five reprinted stories from FMM in order to secure the copyright to the name in the States. James Warren had heard a rumour that the U.K. magazine of the same name was planning to expand its distribution network to the States and wanted to forestall the possibility! Forest Ackerman somehow ended up with the bulk of the copies and he once again profited over the next few decades from his possession of an instant collector's item.

I just picked up 12 DRAG Cartoons and 16 CARtoons from a guy that was selling a bunch of Mads. I've been filling out my Mad collection for years...that means really slowly, heheh.
I was surprised to find these mags included with the Mads, feel guilty for getting them cheap......wait a sec...no i'm not!  Pics to come.

Digging those Roth mags Mr. Hepcat, awesome mags. There are some on ebay right now, not cheap!

they are in ok condition, covers are attached, but they are well read.

A few weeks ago I got it into my head that I wanted to old "MAD Follies" issues with the stencils and mobile. After one false start the collecting gods smiled down on me, and I just bought them both, near mint, all extras attached, from the same seller for 4 bucks each! Now...do I punch out the stencils and start terrorizing the town?

No. Don't punch out the stencils. I'm sure you can terrorize the town adequately enough without them.

My "Keep it in mint!!" ID is screaming "NO!" ;D.  Can you make replicas or find an already used set?  I have the same problem with monster kits.  I still buy the new kits but I display them instead of opening them.  I still build but I buy already put together kits to restore for that.

Yea, I think I'll follow your advice - see if I can find another set. The usual problem is if the stencils are used, than they have been detached, sprayed and either misplaced or discarded. Making stencils from the mint ones may not be that much trouble, if I can get decent scans from them.

Oh, and getting back on topic - do any of you have copies of "1984" (or 1994) from Warren? My dad collected comics and he had a few copies. I was very suprised at the graphic  - actually gratuitious - art. I can imagine mom and pop variety and comic book outlets that had NO IDEA what was in them, happily selling them to the kids in the neighborhood!

Here's a trip down memory lane.  I remember my dad going out on Thansgiving morning, circa 1964, to pick up out-of-town newspapers and some last minute grocery item for my mom. When he came back, he handed me...CREEPY No. 1. He had looked through it at the store, and I remember him telling me about EC, and how these artists were some of the best you could find in the comics. He continued to buy Creepy, EErie and Vampirella for years.

LOVE those MADS! Had the pleasure of meeting iconic MAD cover artist, Kelly Freas some years ago at a local Sci Fi Con. One of my all time faves!

Soooo many details on the back cover of #30 including the border art, the title art, and the inner piece by Davis, crazy!

NO Hep, not plentiful here. Dragtoons and Cartoons much more so than Surf and Big Daddy mags, those tend to stay in collections

IIRC Comix International (#1 anyway) was rushed out w/ a low print run because Warren wanted to trademark the title which was being considered for the Marvel B&W that became Comix Book.

The Kelly Freas MAD covers had a huge affect on me as a kid. I had an older brother who used to bring those home in the late 50's early 60's. I always liked his work for MAD better than his sci-fi work. A great painter he was. Other iconic images that nailed me as a tot were John Severin's insanely detailed covers for Cracked. Anybody have the one with the giant open mouth, full of Bosch-like detail? I'd love to see a decent scan of that...

I have to agree with you.Without a doubt Freas did some striking, even iconic, SciFi covers. But there were quite a few that didn't quite do it for me. But his paintings for MAD were first class, and you can chart his experimenting with mediums and styles in them. 2 extreme examples - his Headless Horseman cover, which was rendered pretty loose. Compare that to his "Great moments in Medicine" spoof, "Presenting the Bill". Meticulously rendered!

Right! And the wet cuckoo clock. Even the title font was covered in water droplets. That got me drawing water droplets at an early age.

I was born in October 1961, which qualifies me to just sneak in as a member of the original generation of Monster Kids.
Both of my parents were genre movie fans & introduced me to "Spooky Movies" as they called them ( which covered everything from the Universal classics to Hammer films to KING KONG & GODZILLA to the Mexican chillers that were shown so often back then ) via our local channel 7's popular FRIGHT NIGHT THEATRE. Which was a institution here in the Buffalo area for many years throughout the '60s & into the early '70s. It was broadcast every Friday night at 11:30, often offering a double feature.
In fact, my very earliest memory of watching a film on television is of sitting up with my Mom & Dad while being transfixed by a showing of Bava's BLACK SUNDAY  when I was 5 years old.
And, when we weren't at home watching genre films, we were often out at the plethora of local drive ins with my two older sisters during the warm weather months. More often than not, watching some sort of monster, horror or sci fi double or triple bill.

Fortunately, not only did they encourage my interest in the films, but they also supported my hobbies that grew out of it. Buying me every new issue of FAMOUS MONSTERS that was published from about 1967 on & each & every one of the Aurora Monster model kits. Which my Mom would not only expertly assemble for me, but also painstakingly paint with great detail.
I was a VERY lucky boy.
And, in time I also began to collect monster & horror comics. Beginning with FM's sister mag CREEPY & eventually leading  to a wide array of other titles as well. Which led to me collecting not only genre comics, but plenty of superhero titles as well.
By the time I was 10, I was a serious collector. Not only buying new stuff each week, but also seeking out back issues.
I continued on like this non-stop, loving my hobbies & my collection for the next several years.
Until I was 18.
At that time in 1980, as I was preparing for college & preoccupied with an overwhelming interest in girls & a growing taste for beer, I lost my interest in comics. And got the brilliant idea to not only stop collecting them, but to sell off my entire collection of 3000 - 3500 books. Which included, among them, complete or near complete runs of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, FANTASTIC FOUR, THE AVENGERS, X-MEN, DAREDEVIL, INCREDIBLE HULK &  many more.
Originally, I had planned to keep all my monster magazines though. As I was still, very much a fan & enthusiast of genre films. Even though I'd since moved on to reading & collecting themore serious magazines like CINEFANTATIQUE & the then-new FANGORIA.
Somehow though, once the dealer came to purchase my comics I got convinced to sell off all my monster magazines as well ( aside from the aforementioned CFTQ & Fangos ). All for a fraction of what it was all  really worth back then ( much less NOW! ).
Even as I had the money placed in my hand & the boxes were carried out the door, I began to regret my decision. I should have put the breaks on it then, while I still had a chance. But, I didn't.
And that's how I was purged of my most prized possessions 32 years ago.

So, pretty sad, huh?
Well, it was. It was definitely one of the all time worst decisions of my life. Something that I regretted so much that I couldn't even bear to LOOK at a comic book for years.
And, as traumatic as it was, the damnedest thing is that I didn't quite learn my lesson from it, because just a couple of years later I sold off all my movie memorabilia. A collection that I'd begun in 1976 consisting of a large array of original one sheets, lobby cards, still sets & press books from genre films including THE EXORCIST, DAWN OF THE DEAD, HALLOWEEN, PHANTASM, ALIEN, STAR WARS & many others. I think if I just had all the STAR WARS stuff from that collection now that it would buy me a house. Seriously. What I had from that flick alone filled a full size dresser drawer! All of it original National Screen Service promo material.
And, again, like an idiot, I sold it for pennies on the dollar.
Bloody Brilliant, huh?

But, I never stopped collecting. I just changed my focus to my boxing memorabilia collection, my Stephen King first editions & other genre novels book collection & kept up with my CFTQ & FANGORIA ( which I've managed to maintain a complete collection of to this day ).

Fast forward to a couple of years ago in early 2010 when, out of the blue, I was overcome with a strong desire to acquire a complete set of Calvin Beck's CASTLE OF FRANKENSTEIN. I'd seen something about the magazine online & I just HAD to start collecting it right away. I think it may have been my mid-life crisis. LOL
I'd had a couple of issues as a kid, but that's all as opposed to well over a hundred issues of FM & dozens of other monster mags. It's notoriously quirky publication schedule & spotty distribution just prevented me from finding them.
So, I began my quest for CoF back issues & began to find some good deals online. Before too long I was well on my way to completing a collection. That is until I got a bit sidetracked by some excellent deals on vintage issues of FAMOUS MONSTERS. Which allowed me to put together a nice collection of that title. No where near complete, but still nice.
Then, one day I happened to see a story about Dark Horse publishing a new version of CREEPY in comic book format. Which compelled me to head down to my local comic shop.
Upon walking in, I'd just planned on buying that first issue of CREEPY. But, something strange occurred & I was just overwhelmed with a disire to reconnect with comics again after 30 years. So, I bought a stack of them & before I knew it, at 48 years old, three decades removed from my last collection, I was  a comic book collector again.
In the two years since, I've finished off my CoF collection, added to my FM collection & built up a collection of almost 1500 comics.
At 50, I'm enjoying my collecting more than at any time of my life.

Jim, welcome to the UMA. I'm sure darn near *all* of us can relate to your post about seller's regret. There's been times in my life for various reasons I had to sell stuff off, rent, food, etc and years later felt the pangs of regret. I'm glad you're reconnecting with things that brought you happiness. That's what collecting and hobbies are all about.

That is a drop dead gorgeous piece of art!! Torres was a phenomenal painter. His pencil sketches were equally awe-inspiring.

Thanks for the images Hepcat.  Especially #19.  I remember ordering it as a back issue when I was a kid.  Did so because of the cover art.

I have been a Famous Monsters Forry kid since age 9. I finally decided I wanted to find a way to display some of them. Especially after YEARS of finally getting those expensive old issues! I had an idea and searched hobby stores and Lowes, Home Depot, etc... This is what I came up with, I found some trim pieces that I thought would make a "boarder shelf" for the magazines. I made the boarder run all the way around my spare bedroom or office. I didn't plan on it, but issues 1-50 fit the complete boarder of the room perfectly! Here are a few photos so you can see the finished boarder. My collector friends love the idea, so I wanted to share with the UMA.

You know, I am still absolutely surprised at how MANY monster comic magazines there were in the 70's...how many of them I have never seen or heard of!  It might have been impossible to know then, and only now, decades later, can we review all this stuff and realize how much of it was produced.  No single bookstore or newsstand stocked all of it.

Great display! Some of those issues look to be in really nice condition. Hopefully you keep the curtains drawn so that they're not exposed to direct sunlight.

Some are bagged and boarded while the most are in a tupperware tub,sealed and kept cool and dry.

Hi jimm and thank you. Are you asking if I have posted pics of my monster room somewhere here or on a thread? I have posted some pics of my models on a couple threads, but not on a specific thread of just of my monster room. I may post more pics sometime. Let me know if there is a specific thread or what you would like to see. I have a collection of Aurora, MPC and other monster build ups, monster toys, Planet of the Apes collection and of course the monster magazines. Thanks again!

Thank you Hepcat and all who commented on my thread and pics of my Famous Monsters boarder. There are a lot of great monster mag collections out there and it's great to see so many posts and pics of the covers that just made us want to buy them! BTW, I have the shades closed almost all the time and only open every now and then. The covers are safe and I don't want my vampires freaking out on me because of the sunlight! Thanks UMA, this is so much fun!!

I purchased the archival frames through MICHAEL'S Arts & Crafts. The underside or undersurface of the frame(s)
loosen freely. Total easy access. Btw, the picture frames are less than ten dollars, and are suitable for comic
books.

You know i was looking threw my warren mags and i don't even think i have one Famous Monsters Mag. I find that sad. :(

I own about 10 issues of Famous Monsters including the Godzilla special issue and the King Kong special issue. I'll post them here when I get them up on Flickr.

Does anyone know how to tell if the issues are original or reprints?

To my knowledge the only issue to ever go to a second print run was issue #1. But both print runs were on newstands at the same time and even Jim Warren has gone on record as saying he can't tell the difference between the two print runs. Therefore don't believe any seller who avows that his #1 is from the first print run. He's lying. He doesn't know.

Oh, thats great because I recently purchased a few issues for a good price and someone told me they were probably newly printed reprints. I didn't care because I wanted them anyway - but its good to know that I can say, this issue came out in 1974! :D

Reprinting a Famous Monsters issue from 1974 would be nothing but a fool's errand. Warren warehoused back issues so plenty exist these days.

Those Creepy and Eerie mags from the early '70s were a real high point for monster magazines. The center color stories, the great art by the very best such as Wrightson and Corben, the free games on the inside of the covers. Even the ads were a hit parade of classics. I remember buying Creepy #55 off the newsstand in 1973 and getting the two sided poster of the Sanjulian covers of Creepy #46 and Eerie #40. I had that poster tacked to the wall for years. I still have the poster (tack holes and all), in a poster frame now, on the wall in my bedroom. I still have the Creepy Crawly Castle Game, too. I stapled the "gameboard", spinner, and pieces, to cardboard back then, and stuck it in a crude box which I illustrated with very crude Eerie Pubs style drawings. I later rebought the Creepys and Eeries in nice condition, but I wouldn't take anything for that ragged poster and game.

The first 25 or so issues of Famous Monsters are tough as nails to find in decent condition. Most of the issues numbered in the late twenties and higher are relatively plentiful even today since they could still be found in the Warren warehouse when Warren ceased publishing in 1981. Therefore if you want to get a good indication of which Warren magazines in general are the toughest to find these days, just check to see which were no longer offered as back issues in late 1981 when Warren ceased publishing.

Yeah, FM #s 1-6 are virtually impossible to find in high grade. The few that do exist in high grade are slabbed and trade for jaw dropping sums. I'm pleased to have solid mid grade copies of the early FMs. Most of the ones that pop up on the 'Bay aren't fit for toilet paper and people still try to milk hundreds of $$ out of them. Glad I got mine back before prices got ridiculous. :)

These aren't Warrens but with only three issues I didn't want to start a new thread for them. These are my copies of Web Of Horror #s 1-3, the whole run. Web Of Horror ranks up there with the very best monster mags in history. Art by Berni Wrightson, Jeff Jones, Michael Kaluta, Frank Brunner, Ralph Reese, Bruce Jones, Wayne Howard, Syd Shores, etc. In three issues it made an impact still felt in the annals of monstermagdom. It was published by Sproul of Cracked fame. Word is Mr. Sproul skipped town without paying the talent before #4 was published, and he even stole some of the original art. This creep robbed us of the greatness that was to follow. The covers of #s 1 & 2 are by the great Jeff Jones. The #3 cover is an awesome Berni Wrightson yeti painting.

I think they are the best monster mags ever published. I bought #2 in 1970 and wore it out reading it so much. Each issue had a cool art contest as the centerfold. It was outlined in illustration with a blank area where you could draw your own monster. I removed it and scrawled something awful in the area and never sent it off. When I saw Horrors Of Spider Island I realized that whichever Web Of Horror guy created Webster must have been heavily influenced by the adorable little spider monster in the tree that bit Gary and turned him into the man-spider menace stalking the showgirls. If I ever see Wrightson at a show I'm going to ask him about the origin of Webster and which WOH guy created him.

Strange how the scanner creates ghost defects with light reflection and exaggerates the defects already present. The books always look better in real life than these scans. It may make it worse scanning them inside the mylar bags.

Here are a couple of oddities. According to David Horne in Gathering Horror they qualify as Warren publications since they have the Warren copyright info on the first page. Anyhoo, in FM #25 an Amateur Home Movie Contest was announced with two shooting scripts which you could buy for the princely sum of $4.00 each. They were 13 & 14 pages long, typed and stapled at the top. How many copies were made or survive is unknown, but these could be the rarest Warren publication in existence. Here's another pic I found in my late Mom's box of old photos. I shot this with a Kodak Instamatic around 1964 (?). I still have all the mags but I'm not motivated enough to pull them to determine which one sports the most recent publication date. I recall the visual joy of spreading them out on the floor and admiring the colorful covers. Of course, they're not all Warren, but anything with a monster was OK with me!

Nice collection. Most monstermag collectors don't limit themselves to just Warren. Like you, I'm into anything monster when it comes to mags (or comics for that matter). I collect Warren, Curtis (Marvel), Skywald, Eerie Pubs, Stanley, Charleton, Cracked, as well as short run publishers like Monster Parade, World Famous Creatures, Monsters And Things, and newer publications like Scary Monsters, Monsters From The Vault, From The Tomb, Screem, and many others. Anything monster in the way of mags, fanzines, comics, or books, usually finds it's way into my collection.  ;)

Mad Monsters and Horror Monsters ran 10 issues each, and were published by Charleton from '61 to '65. Monsters To Laugh With/Monsters Unlimited ran 7 issues with title change at #4, and were published by Marvel from '64 to '66. The Charleton mags were FM imitators, and the Marvels were fumetti style joke mags by Stan Lee.

You don't see many vintage pics of magazine collections I bet!

I enjoyed the Charleton titles, even though they were cheaply produced. Even as a kid I could appreciate the difference in things like contrast levels in photos. Did they not distribute those north of the border, Hepcat? The Mad Monsters issue on the lower right was the first monster mag I ever got. If you look close, you can spot the first FM paperback near a table leg.

I can't specifically remember seeing them on magazine stands because I was oriented more to comics, Mad Drag Cartoons and Creepy magazines at the time, but I'm sure they would have been. I think everything published in the States hit Canadian newsstands.

Wonderful stuff guys, I don't have any of these 70s monster mags myself, but I recently got the book The Weird World of Eerie Publications which is a massive coffee-table size tome about one of Warren's biggest competitors. Fascinating story with great pictures throughout, including all of those wonderfully lurid Carl Borgos covers (who earlier, of course, created the original Human Torch). Highly recommended.

I agree! I like most Richard Corben covers. Plus I really like the fact that the Oakland Raiders were selected as the models for their pro football cover!

This is my copy of the Warren one shot House Of Horror. Jim Warren rushed this to print in order to claim the title because he heard House Of Hammer was going to be distributed in the US as House Of Horror. Monster mag empire dictator Warren hurriedly had around 400 copies printed and distributed to secure the title and then never used it. If that dude had have lightened up a bit he might not have developed the health problems that brought about the bankruptcy of his empire. Just a guess, I don't really know. We fans will always be grateful to Jim Warren for producing the very best line of monster magazines in history.

Anyway, I'm very glad to have a nice copy of this extremely scarce monster mag. I bought this from Greg Bazaz through eBay in 2004. Greg wrote The Graveyard Examiner for Famous Monsters Of Filmland back in the day. My copy is signed by Forry on the first page. Now if I could just find a copy of Eerie #1 and that darned Heidi Saha book...

It was certainly not Jim Warren's finest hour. He must have taken quite the loss on the effort since in order to secure a copyright to the name all he needed to do was distribute something like 200 copies in five states and Warren didn't do much more than that. Basically all he accomplished was forcing the British publishers of House of Hammer to use the name Halls of Horror instead in order to distribute the magazine in the United States. Therefore all that Warren really managed to do was cut off his own nose to spite his face.

Forrest Ackerman didn't exactly come off smelling like roses either. He said that James Warren gave him the remaining unsold copies of the magazine after he asked for them. It's not that he was planning to give them away to ardent monster fans though. Ackerman realized that hardly anyone knew that the magazine even existed and that Warren magazines had a large enthusiastic collector base. Ackerman knew that he could sell the magazines to ardent Warren collectors for perhaps $hundreds each, and he did.

Jim Warren has certainly been an interesting character over the years. I can't help but love the guy for all the joy he has given us monsterkids, but I don't know if I could have worked with him. He was cool to some like Bernie Wrightson, and a royal pain to many others. From what I hear Bill Dubay was about lose his freakin' mind before he escaped the employ of Lord Warren. But it's a stone cold fact that without Warren Publishing us monsterkids would have missed out on a huge chunk of monster fun.

Everytime I see Barbara on one of those great Vampi photo covers I lament that we never got that Hammer Vampirella movie. One of those window in time things that is forever lost.  :(

I wish I had a good stills collection. Most of this stuff I'm just hotlinking off Google images. That's the reason sometimes they quit showing. Lotsa good images on the interweb these days. The earlier issues of both magazines were exceptional it was only when they ventured more into the sci-fi genre than the quality waned. Even the covers seemed to be better and more appealing. Again thank you Hep for the scans.

There was a UK edition published featuring issue 15 on the first cover I think that it only ran for a few issues, the main differance was it had a more solid backing much like a paperback. Maybe someone who has the Warren companion canhelp with the details.

The Warren Companion is a very entertaining read as well as being a good source of info for all things Warren.

Gathering Horror is the most comprehensive bible for Warren fans. Nothing else comes close to the staggering amount of info therein. The bad part is it's OOP and only 300 were printed. Sometimes one pops up on eBay but for a hefty price. If you want to put down the greenbacks then this is THE Warren tome.

These aren't Warren publications but they are issues of the only Warren fanzine, so I thought it more appropriate to post them here than in the non-Warren thread. This is my full run of Spooky, the Warren fanzine. It was published by Piers Casimir from 2003-2013. It's possible he isn't done yet, but I have no way of knowing. The issues are all digest size except for the yearbook which is truly huge (the size of a UK mag and thick). A very attractive little fanzine packed with infotainment for the Warren enthusiast.

The first issue is only 12 pages and it's the only one I didn't order from Piers directly. I recently picked it up on eBay, and the seller claims they were all sent out with the spine stress lines like that. You almost never see the first three issues offered for sale. I believe the print runs on issues 1-3 were very small, maybe around 300, but I'm not certain. I also have a Famous Monsters digest size four page checklist that I didn't post. It came with issue 4 I believe. The refrigerator magnet of the first issue cover was offered as a premium from Piers (with subscription).

Piers put out the Special in 2013 after a three year hiatus. I hope he decides to start publishing Spooky again on a regular basis and turns it into a magazine sized publication as Martin Arlt did with Mad Scientist. Warren mags are the best monster magazines ever, and it's a shame there isn't at least one ongoing publication devoted to them.

I'm new on this board and new at collecting Famous Monsters of Filmland. I just received my first copy, #58 and noticed that their is no printing on the spine. Is there supposed to be printing on the spine or was it just on certain issues. I believe #1 had it if my memory serves me correct. Thanks.

This lame book commonly sells for hundreds of dollars due to scarcity. It's just a bunch of childhood pics of Heidi Saha and some captions by Forry. It has absolutely nothing to do with the edgy horror that made Warren great. I'll probably never own one because I refuse to give over 20 bucks for something like this just to complete the collection. I put it in the same category as the Tiny Tim book from Warren (hiding behind the name "Corncob"  :laugh:), and I got that one for around 6 bucks. This is a good example for why I'm not slavishly devoted to being a "completest".

The worthwhile Warrens I still need are Eerie #1 (that ashcan costs a fortune now), the Westerns titles, a couple of issues of Screen Thrills Illustrated, and the two #7 variants (I have the Ghouls Eye Sticker variant of #4). Of course there are several foreign editions I don't have and probably won't go after.

It's hard to get everything of anything. Buy what you like and don't worry about it.

Blazing Combat #1 is very hard to find. I guess those weren't plentiful in the famed Warren warehouse like most Warrens were. That hi res scan is very unforgiving with the black cover. There is some wear on my copy but it looks pretty nice in person, and it appears much worse in that scan.

BC #s 3 and 4 are fairly easy to find in my experience, with #2 being a little more difficult. Of course, they're all hard to find in truly high grade. Even the copies that laid around the warehouse for several years are usually in mid-grade because they weren't protected properly.

Also, the Blazing Combat Anthology from the '70s is fairly scarce. It featured reprints from the first four issues as well as reprints of the Frazetta covers in color. It was one of those thick books you had to order like the Vampirella Special and the Dracula book. Not many of those type books were made unlike the regular newsstand mags which were printed in abundance. I have a copy of BC Anthology but it's only in mid-grade. Still, I'm glad to just own a copy since it's become quite expensive.

I was curious about the demand for Blazing Combat mags since I haven't been on the hunt for them in over a decade. It says there are 11 watchers and there have been 9 inquiries so evidently this scarce issue is still in high demand. The seller claims it's in VF-NM but I'm stunned that someone would advertise such an expensive book and fail to show hi res scans of the front and back covers and pics of the interior pages. This seller just has the one pic of the book in bag and board and it doesn't even enlarge! I doubt the book is really in the grade claimed and the seller is just fishing for offers or some idea of demand. Poor way to do business.

I'm leery of sellers who toss around terms like "Very Rare" (and, especially "Mint", though that isn't the case here). By the accepted Overstreet definition the seller is obviously wrong about rarity, and that doesn't lend much credence to the seller's skill at grading. It's not like we have an idea of grade by evidence of that inferior photo. I've learned that sellers will state absolutely anything to make a sale. That's why scans are used for comics and mags, to give some measure of proof. If I don't see a good scan of front and back covers on expensive books I avoid it like the plague. A book this expensive should also show pics of the interior page quality. Regarding his money back guarantee, that can be problematic and could well end up by having to open a case with eBay to get a refund. Who wants to invite the time and trouble that could cost?

All of this aside though, Blazing Combat #1 is uncommon compared to the other issues. The reason you see as many listings as you do is because the high price motivates sellers to list them.

Copies of Wildest Westerns are in general tougher to find than Blazing Combat.

There are listings for all of them on eBay currently. Mid-grade issues aren't really that expensive. High grade copies of any of them would be exceedingly difficult to find. Aside from the Saha book, Eerie #1 Ashcan, a couple of early FM variants, and a couple of issues of Screen Thrills Illustrated, I have every Warren issue. I don't think I'll ever have the whole thing because of the prohibitive price of a few of those missing books, but those Westerns are well worth getting.

The Creeps isn't Warren proper, but it's the closest thing we'll ever see to it. Here's a review from Monster Magazine World:

Since Warren's original run of CREEPY from 1964 - 1983 (145 issues) there have been numerous attempts at reviving the spirit of the vaunted magazine-sized horror comic book. Dark Horse acquired the rights to the Warren title and branding, including the image of Uncle Creepy, as well as the rights to reprint the backlog. The resulting series of "Creepy Archives" is impressive, but disappointingly, the new version of the title was shrunk to a standard comic book size, exactly the opposite of Warren's work-around to the albeit weakening stranglehold of the Comics Code Authority which caused the self-immolation of many horror comic publishers in the mid-1950s who were either unwilling or unwitting enough to adapt to the new rules.

Another, indie-produced horror comic, BLOKE'S TERRIBLE TOMB OF TERROR, uses similar design features and themes to CREEPY. Publisher/writer Jason Crawley (really!) and artist Mike Hoffman and Co. do a pretty good job of it, but don't quite hit the heart with the stake.

Then, from out of the blue (or the grave, as Unca' Creepy would probably say) comes THE CREEPS, a brand-new, magazine-sized horror comic that is an unapologetic, unabashed, near clone of CREEPY. Now in its sixth issue, THE CREEPS is the closest thing yet to a true homage to the original, so close in fact, that one could say it is a pastiche. It is obviously deliberate by design, and while other attempts capture the "look" of CREEPY, THE CREEPS not only accomplishes that, but it also actually "feels" like the old CREEPY.

Granted, we will never again see the likes of a team of writers and artists that shepherded the early years of CREEPY. These consummate professionals were the crème de la crème of illustrators that had cut their teeth and sharpened their pencils over the drawing board for EC, the greatest line of horror comics ever, for chrissakes!

In this latest issue of Warrant Publishing's THE CREEPS however, one can see artists clearly under the spell of the aforementioned genius loci of horror comics. What you have here is a bullpen of artists like the Reed Crandall-esque Reno Maniquis, the Wally Wood-esque Jason Paulos, the Orlando-esque Mansyur Daman and the Brunner-esque Mike Dubisch, all combined to achieve a vague, but eerily (no pun intended) reminiscent appearance of the original. Even the mag's mascot, The Old Creep, is a blatant swipe of Uncle Creepy. Editor Rich Sala, writing as "Artie" Goodwin has brought aboard a capable stable of story scripters, including Warren alumni Nicola Cuti and Don Glut. And yes, the stories themselves have that old touch of the macabre and sardonic, with twist endings that hit the mark nearly every time.

I have to admit, I was a little leery with the first couple of issues, but the last two or so have shown a significant improvement in the writing as well as the art moving in the direction of more traditional draughtsmanship as opposed to modernist comic illustration. Issue #6 even sports a Frazetta cover! And I would be remiss to mention the anti-tobacco ad on the letters page as was seen in the original Warren 'zine?

I'm looking forward to more of THE CREEPS. Now that it's selling well enough to be put on the shelves at Barnes & Noble, it is hopeful that a new wave of readers will catch on to the entertainment found between its covers.

And here's a review by me: The Creeps captures the spirit of classic Warren, and comes close to the quality. It's inexpensive and it's damn good... so get it!  ;)

What an incredibly DUMB way to sell highly valued items! If the more expensive issues were listed in separate auctions the seller could have realized several times that amount. True, it would have taken time and effort but the payoff would have been more than worth it. And it was a professional comic book dealer that sold them! They might have been on consignment from a third party which means the actual owner had to pay the dealer a hefty cut. The only one that made out great here is the buyer who got one helluva deal. Stupid way to sell a run of FM. ???

FM #100 came out in '73.

If had the extra money I would have bid a little over $2K with the intention of upgrading some of mine and flipping the rest. Of course we don't know what the high bidder's max was.. it could have been over $3K but I doubt it. I would list them all separately as Buy It Now at just under full retail and just be patient. The ones that didn't sell after a couple of re-listings maybe add Make Offer and wait a bit more.

This deal would be a dream come true to someone just starting an FM collection. It took me years to complete mine and even though I got some good deals I still paid much more than these went for. Still can't figure why a big-time dealer like Sparkle City would sell this way.  ???

I have no idea why it wasn't included. Maybe they didn't have a copy. But, you're right, chronologically the '72 Fearbook fell within the time range.

In fact one of my buddies just disposed of dozens of silver coins issued by the Royal Canadian Mint in the last few decades. I was aghast when I learned that he just went to the closest "We buy your gold/silver place". :o  They of course just paid him some discounted percentage of the silver content's value. These fellows would have then flipped the coins to one of the local coin dealers for closer to the actual value of the silver content. So why didn't my buddy take his coins to three or four of the local coin dealers to get their (higher) bids? The apathetic twerp just couldn't be bothered.

It's always a decision to weigh the time/effort against potential gain. In the FM auction example above I would have put the effort in to earn 2 or 3 extra $K.  ;)

Vic Prezio Creepy #28 Cover Original Art (Warren, 1969). Surprisingly, from the story "The Doorway" and not from the story "Valley of the Vampires" in this issue. Prezio's work is familiar with fans of both Warren's magazines, as well as fans of his covers for Gold Key comics. This terrifying cover image was inspired by a panel on Page 4 of this tale. It was created in oil on illustration board. It has been matted with an aperture of 17.25" x 20.5". In Excellent condition.
