This undoubtedly is one of the greatest sympho metal bands EVER. The mighty Therion from the mid 90's. They are still going strong but are now more classical symphonic music with metal edges.

The B-Girls were a punk band that burst onto the Toronto scene in 1977 after a fortuitous meeting in the washroom of the Plaza II Hotel (or so they claimed at the time):

I took them in at Club David's off Bay Street where they opened for the Boyfriends from Detroit. The B-Girls that evening played two sets of six songs, the very same ones each time. Within a half year they graduated to CBGB's in New York where bass player Cynthia Ross, the blonde in the blue top, hooked up with Stiv Bators of the Dead Boys and married him.

Stiv Bators died way too young. Struck down by a taxi in Paris ,did not go to the hospital and died of brain trauma.

Cheetah Chrome did some gigs in Vegas. Put on a great show, with lots of energy. It was really super cool to hear Dead Boys' songs.

Maybe one of the most influential Goth-type group around.
The Viletones were certainly the best known if not the first punk band in Toronto in 1977. One of the venues in which I saw the Viletones was the Turning Point which was upstairs on Bloor Street. The place was packed that evening and it was claustrophobic and hot despite the fact that fall had turned to winter. Guitarist Freddy Pompeii kept the impatient crowd waiting by tuning up of all things! I mean why bother? Vocalist Steve Leckie a.k.a. Nazi Dog eventually commented "a$*h*l**'s always tuning up!", at which point somebody yelled "What's the point?"
I may have been wearing my suit and tie, like why bother to change your work clothing for a Viletones concert? I waited for a break in their set and in the spirit of the occasion shouted "You suck! Get off the bloody stage!" To this Steve responded "Oh man, you know you just feed my ego with words like that!"

I lived right across the street in 1977-79 from the down in the dumps Hotel Isabella which basically functioned as a tavern. It had a charm of its own and attracted an eclectic client base of the neighbourhood rummies and various iconoclasts to whom slumming was a political statement of sorts. I liked to stop in on occasion for a bite to eat even though the food was only so-so. I guess I was one of the iconoclasts because the atmosphere at the Isabella just felt so right to me.
In an effort to broaden the Isabella's market, the punk band The Ugly was booked for an evening in 1978:

I comment on metal pretty much every day on UMA, lol, so I'll stick with Punk and Dark Wave for this thread.
Misfits one of my fav bands period. But on UMA that's too obvious of a pick. So other than Misfits I would say Bad Brains my fav punk/hardcore band of all time. They're epic. Four Rastafarian Black dudes totally rockin' out, it's awesome. Very politically charged punk if you're unfamiliar. Speaking of old school Wash DC punk/hardcore, I would put Minor Threat up there as one of my favs too.
In terms of Dark Wave, I think of old school acts like Bauhaus and Siouxsie and Banshees. But there are some new school artists I really like. If you dig this kind of music, I highly recommend Cold Cave and Drab Majesty.

Truthfully I think heavy metal is very different musically from punk and New Wave. Here are a few prototypical heavy metal tracks:

While I'm a big fan of blues rock (e.g. Yardbirds, Cream, Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin, etc.) which was a formative influence on heavy metal, I much prefer the New Wave to the heavy metal genre as a whole. New Wave bands in general take themselves far less seriously than do heavy metal bands.

Another great list Hep. The Killing Moon such a great song. Other than Metal and hardcore, post-punk and new wave prob my fav genres. Old school gangsta rap prob third fav genre😎
My favourites would be blues-rock, garage rock, acid rock/psychedelic blues, British Invasion (lots from the sixties therefore), Chicago blues and New Wave.
What I can't abide is the dance pop that's been dominating the charts for the last couple of decades. It causes me to flee from supermarkets and other stores if it's being played as background music.
