Topps issued this wonderful 88 card Space set in 1957:

It was rereleased a few years later under the new name of Target Moon to capitalize on the space race.

Half the set was reissued by SICLE later in the sixties as a premium with the purchase of frozen treats under the Target Moon name but with salmon coloured backs. These are quite difficult to find.

Here are scans of some of my Topps Space cards from 1957 showing more of the detail:

A set of sixty Space Orbit coins were issued as a premium in Dare, Krun-Chee and Hunter's Potato Chips in Canada in late 1963 or 1964. Here are scans of some of my Dare coins:

And here are scans of some of my Krun-Chee coins:

The Dare coins are more common than the Krun-Chee ones since Dare chips were distributed in and around Toronto while the Krun-Chee chip plant was in Windsor and the chips weren't sold much beyond southwestern Ontario. Krun-Chee chips were not that common even in London when I was a kid. Meanwhile, the Hunter's Space Orbit coins are the toughest of them all. I have only one.

This is so cool! A Banner Space Helmet. Circa 1953. Had this along time. I remember someone selling toys in the old ToyShop magazine had a kid with this helmet and radiating radar goggles  at the top of every ad he ran. I thought it was so great and got seriously in the hunt for one when I found out it was an actual toy. Green radiating radar eyes, yellow goggles, gray helmet, translucent red spaceship on top.....what a wild mix of colors! Notice star map on top of box...no Pluto yet....

Just put this in the "Give Me A Gun" thread, but it needs to be here too! This is the Hubley Atomic Disintegrator. Made in 1954 it weighs 2 pounds and is 7.25 inches long. Shoots caps and just looks like what it is...the coolest toy space gun ever!

MonsterBob- that's a nice robot.

Bigbud--- You can see a missle coming right at you with those Radar goggles on that helmet. Wasn't the planet Pluto re-labeled as not a planet years ago?
I seem to remember hearing something about that, if so, your box is back in fashion.

That Atomic Disintegrator is awesome!

Yes, Pluto has been demoted to planetoid status on the rationale that Pluto has proven insufficiently large to "clear" its orbit of other bodies. What necessitated the reclassification is that Pluto has turned out to be much smaller than initially thought and a number of other objects of comparable size to Pluto have been discovered out in the Kuiper belt beyond Neptune in the last twenty years.

Does anyone out there recognize this guy? I once saw a larger version and didn't buy it, I regret it!
The closest thing I found were these suction cup guys.

Wow, Ilikemonsters, we have the same little robot figures! I've been meaning to post pics since this thread started, but didn't get around to it til now, after seeing yours. These little (1") figures have been traveling around with me for 40 years. My mom put them on one of my birthday cakes when I was a young'in.

There were also three astronauts and their orange/white  rocketship:

The robots also had a flying saucer with a transparent dome, but that has not survived. Sniff.

I have no idea where my mom got these figures! She often picked up little things like these for my brother and I. And she was creative in using toys on cakes.

Holy crap!
He's got friends! Mine is a little 1" too.
Years ago, I can't remember where, I passed up one that was much bigger.
Those are great, I wonder if they were called Moon Platoon as well.

The figures on that Moon Platoon box look exactly like the ones I have, although they are much more colorful and have the suction cup doo dad. Even when mine were new, they were mostly gray with little dabs of red and gold paint.

I'm wondering if the astronauts are from an entirely different figure set. And if Mom grabbed the rocket and UFO from other sources. A mystery, but now I can look for Moon Platoon! Thanks for sharing some clues.

A U.S. variant of the Space Orbit coin set was also issued with Gordon's Potato Chips and Krun-Chee Corn Chips. To avoid offending delicate American sensibilities, the coins of Commie Soviets Yuri Gagarin, Gherman Titov and Nikita Khrushchev were replaced with coins bearing less threatening images. Here is a scan of a sheet of my Gordon's ones:

As you can see, John Kennedy was deemed a suitable image albeit Khrushchev was not. Here's a scan of a sheet of my Krun-Chee Corn Chip coins:

I recall the Pez display in Grants as a kid, early 70s. Had to have been a whole endcap or 4 ft section, right next to the chocolate cigarettes, LOL

Man, I can still see the Grants in downtown Waterbury like it was yesterday.........especially the basement toy dept.!!

Yep, here you'd walk past the GIANT aquarium fish section (and probably Creature Penn Plax) to get to the toys. Funny how Grants and K-Mart in same center both had diners attatched.

Great graphics! Was that Flash Gordon bagatelle like so many ohers made by Marx?

???

I don't remember who made it and  the card I have doesn't have any toy company name on it.

I also have this Flash Gordon pistol. And I have some Flash Gordon candy boxes, I just have to find the photo.

For me it's a tossup between the ones at Kresge and Woolworth. One of each faced each other on Dundas Street in downtown London up until sometime in the early 1990's. A Metropolitan a very few doors to the west of the Kresge store and a Zeller's just across Richmond Street to the east  completed the picture. My mother used to haunt these five-and-dimes and I would typically be in tow.  I always hoped that my mother would treat me to a bowl of ice cream or something at those lunch counters after a long afternoon of being dragged about long aisles.

My introduction to such toy classics as Great Garloo and the Aurora monster model kits also occurred as Kresge. I really miss those stores and their lunch counters. You never know what you've got till it's gone.

Here are scans of my Space Magic coins that were premiums within Krun-Chee, Schuler's and Nalley's Potato Chips in 1964 or so:

Although all these brands were also sold somewhere in Canada at the time, my impression is that these coins were only distributed in the U.S. since that's where they all seem to originate these days.

Yes. Both the Space Magic and Space Orbit coins were available in chips in the States. The coins were packed in little cellophane bags. Old London Potato Chips also made Rocky & Bullwinkle coins anailable in 1964(?) and metal baseball coins in 1965.

He generally goes for a bit less than the Horikawa Giant, I'd love to have both! Both have the same unique back and forth walking, maybe some similar tooling between the 2 companys.

Here's an uncut sheet of space themed rub off transfers:

The transfers were included as premiums in Cracker Jack for a few years around 1960. I saw this uncut sheet hanging on the wall of a card shop in London about nineteen years ago and I had to buy it. The sheet brought back an almost forgotten memory of these tattoos having been included in the boxes of Cracker Jack that were given out in the boodle bags at the Labatt's company Xmas party for kids at the London Arena. While we waited for Santa to make his appearance, we got cake, cookies and ice cream and were entertained by a wonderful magician.  Every child's name was then called and we  each received a wrapped present such as a model kit together with the boodle bag full of candy treats from Santa. It couldn't get any better than that for a kid at the time.

If these Aliens Pops candy display blow mold heads don't say "Take Me to Your Leader", I don't know what does.

I picked these up at a garage sale a few years ago....I actually set them on frames and put black robes and hooded sweatshirts over them, and they made a surprisingly disturbing family portrait.

This is a Dinky space freighter from the Gerry Anderson TV show 1999. It is just at 9 inches long. Dinky had a great way of designing nice desplay boxes for their toys. I just found out how easy it is to remove the clear plastic from the box. This is the Freighter's first time at being FREE of it's box. There is a spool with thread underneath that must be for lowering the 4 radioactive barrels from the ship. I had a different but yet similar 1999 Dinky, but in an attempt to make the wife happy and show I could also SELL something I let it go on the Bay. She has since given up on such foolish expectations......ha!

Jeff, I see some of those figures in my Superior Space Port. This playset was produced by Superior in 1952. Beautiful tin litho main gate, fence and building. The scene on the radar screen revolves to show invading aliens. There is a crank on the side which is the space siren....pretty much like an old halloween clicker when you rotate the handle. There is the space cannon which fires one of three shells, the space rocket mortar and the colorful space vehicles. Plus the large red spinners that takeoff atop the building. I was the first to open the box, and was (at the time) thrilled to find that the factory had included 2 packets of colorful aliens instead of one alien packet and one spaceman packet. I love all the aliens, but now wish I had the spacemen too. They came with clear space helmets. All parts were packed in old newspaper dated July 1952 The New York Journal American......article and picture are of a 60 year old lady being dragged from her home which was being sold for back taxes......

I'm just staggered at some of those MIB toys you have from the forties to the seventies! They're beyond awesome and you seem to be able to reach in anytime and haul even more of them out for us to see!

Yes. Periodically we must all stop to smell the roses and appreciate what we actually already have!

At some point though I'd like to get into collecting these things:

1. Vending machine cards and premiums from the sixties. Bubble gum from vending machines was a big part of my life as a kid and vending machine cards are very easy to store in my existing card sheets and binders.

2. Cereal boxes and premiums from the fifties through the seventies. Cereal was also a very big part of my young life. They'd present storage/display problems though so for the time being I'm limiting myself to collecting the football, baseball and hockey cards that were printed on the back of some of these cereals.

3. HO Lionel train cars. My buddy had an HO Lionel train set and I marvelled at the operating cars that were pictured in the catlogue. I even tried to save up for a set. The cars would also be easy to display/store in the same cabinets in which I keep my model kits.

4. Carded rack toys like the Space Aliens in this thread and the MPC Pop-Tops and Weird Monsters. The toys I had in my very early years never went beyond anything more elaborate than a random assortment of these little figurines, mainly knights and soldiers. They'd be tough to display though.

5. Magic Slates. I liked them as a kid and they were made over the years with dozens and dozens of cool licensed characters. They'd be easy to store with the major problem being that I know of no catalogue that summarizes the ones that were made.

6. Roalex sliding puzzles like these:

Once again, I liked them as a kid and they featured so many cool and exciting characters. But with these as well it would be nice to find a catalogue recounting those that were made.

7. Halloween costumes. I always admired the ones on display hanging from the ceiling of the Kresge and Woolworth stores in downtown London but I never even tried to get my mother to buy me one since I knew that she would consider such a one use purchase to be shamelessly profligate. But display would present a real problem so this collecting area is on the far back burner.

8. Wacky Wobblers. So many cool characters! And easy to store/display in a cabinet. But it's still so entirely open ended since they're still being made. I prefer collecting things with a finite as opposed to open end.

Quote7. Halloween costumes

Hey Hep....do you or anyone here remember Halloween costumes where the entire front of the costume was a large plastic rectangle with alittle cloth hanging off the bottom? There were eye holes and such, but that was all incorporated in the scene depicted on the large plastic rectangle. Seems I asked this before and someone knew what I was talking about.......I just forgot who it was.......Buddy

70s to early 80s I reckon. Generally most 60s to early 70s is Japan and tin. These are HK and Taiwan and mostly plastic except for big one which is partly tin and later 70s Japan made. All still work!

Wow jimm, those commercials were super! Somewhat deceiving in what the toys were actually capable of.  I know that as a kid I would have been confused at the claim that Robert could drive a bulldozer....they were actually showing a completely different Robert toy that used a small non-removable Robert Robot on the dozer. And the missile firings...ha! Adding the video of actual missiles launching was funny. And the last claim of the Astro Base commercial "It can be used to destroy stray asteroids", ha!.........thanks for that!     Buddy

Here's one of the gems jimm dug up an old commercial of...The Ideal Astro Base. Pretty big toy. Runs on 4 batteries.....has a space scope with revolving screen showing asteroids and other space stuff. There is a rocket launch button to shoot at the items seen on the screen...screen stops revolving and a machine gun like sound is heard. There is the space lock with crane to lower the astronaut into the space probe vehicle. The vehicle has a long cord that attaches to a power receptacle on the Astro Base.  The space probes are red tipped missiles.

What is alittle confusing for me is that the commercial jimm gave us to view prices the Astro Base at $19.95. For being a toy of the very early 60's that is a considerable price. The 1964 Sears Toy Book has Mr. Mercury at $5.99.....Marx Mechanical Frankenstein at $5.99..... Marx Haunted House at $9.99...... Big Loo (Which came in a gigantic box) $9.99.......King Zor (another giant box) $12.66 ....and Robot Commando at $13.99.  So it's alittle hard for the collector in me to rationalize Astro Base so much more initially expensive.  I mean....3 Marx Frankensteins plus change or one Astro Base? No contest.....at least no contest 50 years later.........

Yes! The late 50's early 60's brought out some great space toys!  I can still think like a 10 year old (quite often per the wife), and this Ideal Astro Base, though really cool to look at would have bored me fairly quickly. The space probe vehicle being tethered by a chord would have been a pain. Still....it's cool to look at as a collectible....

A set of sixty Space Orbit coins were issued as a premium in Dare, Krun-Chee and Hunter's Potato Chips in Canada in 1965(?). Here are scans of some of my Dare coins:Wow ! These remind me of the hockey coins we used to collect when I was growing up in the early 60's.

Wow ! These remind me of the hockey coins we used to collect when I was growing up in the early 60's.

The 1960-61 Shirriff Hockey Coins were the first premium coins of this sort issued, and the three Hockey Coin issues in 1960-61, 1961-62 and 1962-63 were phenomenally popular with young boys in Canada. Their popularity peaked with the second issue. As a result, the Hockey Coins issued in these years are pretty boring as collectibles these days because they're so very common.

Here's a picture of The MAN holding up my binder of the much scarcer and therefore more interesting 1968-69 Shirriff Hockey Coins together with a binder of the 1962 Shirriff Baseball Coins:

The Jell-O Car Wheels and Aircraft Wheels are also common as spit these days because they too were so widely collected when issued in Jell-O and Hostess Potato Chips in 1961 and 1962 respectively. I've been plugging away at the various coin issues for more than thirty years. Other than the 1968-69 Hockey Coins, the most interesting coin issues to present day collectors are the 1963 Humpty Dumpty CFL Coins, the 1964 Nalleys CFL Coins, the Krun-Chee/Schulers/Hunters Fighting Ship Coins, the Royal Pudding Fish Plaques, the Old London Rocky & Bullwinkle Coins and the various issues of Space Coins.

Interesting that it's the first Lindberg model kit I've ever bought. Moreover, it wasn't even on my radar screen until our own lblambert infected me with his own enthusiasm for it.

Some of my Ultraman stuff:

If I recall correctly, these were soup (ramen noodles) flavoring packets.  They featured different versions of Ultraman and the larger package came with a sticker.  These pictures show the 2 sides of them.  I found them at a Asian food store a few years back.  Who would be crazy enough to save such a thing?  Oh, me.

First the outer package:

Here's a bad boy that needs to be in the Sci-Fi collectibles thread. Robot Commando by Ideal 1961. Hypnotic weird eyes rotate and he is controlled by a hand-held device that originally was intended to be voice-activated. Robot Commando throws balls from his swinging arms and fires missiles from his head. I got lucky with mine, he is gently used, but also still has an unopened bag of original balls and missiles.....

I'm a 'monster lover' and some of the Mystery in Space (3rd comic from either the top or bottom) and the ones on the Tales of the Unexpected are great.  I really like 'The Beast Oracle of Uranus'  ..  8)

Yes that is correct, Dan Dare was a popular charactor from Eagle Comics in the UK ,

He was a space hero / adventurer like a combination Tom Corbett / Space Patrol and Buck Rogers , they made tons of stuff for the character I have several ray guns , pinball aka bagatel games , etc from the 50s all Dan Dare

A great character to collect even here in the US

Here are a couple 6 inch space figures made by Empire toys in the mid 70's. I would like to have the whole set. I know there were 5 possibly 6 different ones. There seems from what I have read been more of these in the UK than the states. These are very HTF and $ if you find them. People usually tag these as Marx but there are no markings on them.

Not as cool as the vintage toys here. I'd bought/built those Billikens back in around 1990.

If I recall correctly, the insides of the LAND UNKNOWN comic are far nicer than the cover -- they are drawn by Alex Toth.

The cover of the comic is merely a reverse negative of the movie poster:

Western Printing and Dell wanted the tyrannosaurus on the left to make sure the tyrannosaurus was always at least peeking out at kids on the comic rack.

Lovely Helmet , I always liked that one very stylish, if you watch "It Came from Outer Space" , you will see  a suprise when there's a knock at the door midway in the film

I had that one as well as the Capt Video one and the Space Patrol helmets in the boxes , I sold the Capt Video one outright w/ the box , I had a different guy pester me for the Tom Corbett and Space Patrol ones , I finally gave in and sold him the helmets but kept the boxes as I liked the artwork on them

Tom Corbett was on during TV's infancy. The Tom Corbett Space Cadet show ran from 1950-1955 and had a run on each of the big 3 television stations during that time. These are thick cardboard life-size masks of the crew....Tom Corbett, Astro and Roger Manning. I had Frankie Thomas, the actor that played Tom Corbett, sign the back side of his mask. Frankie passed away in 2006 and was buried in his original Tom Corbett television uniform...which fit him till his final day....

Not sure of the origin of these masks....I had thought they were off the back of cereal boxes, but the cut around all the edges gives no indication of scissors, and the cut is rather perfect for a kid or even his parent...

A funny story... lest it is now.... at the convention Frankie Thomas (Tom Corbett) guested at we also had Gene Colan (of Daredevil fame..and others). I had it arranged that after the con closed staff and guests were to be treated to a banquet at our local steak house The Golden Ox. Well, it started to rain, so I suggested to Mr. and Mrs. Colan that I would pull my Dodge mini-van to the convention hall front door and then I'd slide the side door open for them. Well, I pulled around and here they came out the front running for the van.....Mrs. Colan jumped in the front seat....Gene holds a coat over his head to shield from the rain and he comes barreling down the sidewalk....jumps at the side door...hits his head on the top opening of the doorway and falls right back out of the van onto the cement sidewalk. I just sat there taking this all in for afew seconds....I was dead tired after all the putting on of the con and here I'd probably killed one of my guests of honor. Mrs. C and I got him in the back, her beside him, and he kinda moaned to the Golden Ox. All went well from then, but it was a small puzzle to many why Mr. Colan had a small towel on top of his head while we ate.....The Colans were really sweet people.

Here's the 1952 Marx Tom Corbett Space Cadet Sparkling Spaceship. Tin (they say steel) windup with rear exhaust sparking action. Kinda proud of this one. No wear on the wheels where it touches the ground...pretty much like-new.

When I narrowed my comic book focus to mostly monster oriented books a few years ago I kept my Kirby Demon run of 1-16. It's a fun book, if a tad wacky.

Mattel made a Kamandi action figure a few years ago. It didn't sell very well, as I kept seeing them at Walmart in the clearance aisle for years.

yep , every once in a while a toy company will make a cool obsure figure but they usually are in low numbers and turn out to be scarce later on.

Remember the The Martian Chronicles figures or Close Encounters figure? I had a batch of them but they were low production & hard to find when they came out , when you did find some in the stores there were usually alot of them there as they did not sell well and most finally ended up in close out stores.

Two other monsters were also made, but I doubt I will ever find them. I was amazed to find out these were produced in the late 50s and even had their own jingle.

That critter is so weird and neat! Does the box tell what company produced him?

Unfortunately I have a whopping total of only one card from the Lost in Space bubble gum card set that Topps issued in 1966:

I have all four of the wrapper variations, however. Here's a scan of two:

This is pretty cool! This is an Ideal Space Fighter Transport Ship. From the 1950s. Mine is molded in yellow plastic...others were done in a silver/gray. Hard to find item so I'm ok with the one broken gun and 2 missing space fighters. But.......with a complete fighter and a complete gun I'm gonna do some molding and cast the missing pieces. Shouldn't be too hard to do. the 2 missing fighter ships were/will be red and blue. The Space Fighter Transport is just at 11 inches long.

You have a great robot collection, jimm! I like them but just never began a collection, and at this late date with limited space I probably won't. That's one of the cool things about sites like UMA- we get to enjoy seeing things we appreciate but don't have. Keep posting those robots, sir.  ;)

It's one of those '90s Don Post reissues of the calendar masks. Shouldn't be too hard finding one on eBay. They are pricey, though!

Great Turok cover!
Yeah, those Turok covers really grabbed your attention when you were a Dino Kid perusing the spinner racks back in the '60/'70s. I bought a copy of #58 off-the-rack back in 1967 at the age of 8 and added it to my small Turok stash. Those were all read to death and slipped through the cracks of time. But, about 4 years ago I became obsessed with buying back all of my old Turoks and getting as many of the other issues as possible. In a Dino Kid fever I managed to put together the whole run of 130 issues, the Giant, and the Golden Comics Digest, for around $700. I went through several upgrades for copies below G (2.0) and ended up with a pretty nice run ranging from G-VF/NM. Really glad to have them.  :)

Dennis Druktenis through a Scary Monsters Scaresale in the early 2000s. I bought 4 of the Don Post reissues from Dennis in "new" condition at some good prices- Metaluna Mutant $50, Mole People $40, Dracula $50, boxed Creature $100.

Couple of Alpha Video SF Box Sets with robots:

I ordered these from Oldies.com a few years ago. The robots are cheap but I like the look of the whole package. The DVDs are standard Alpha PD fare. Those are volumes 1 and 3. They didn't have #2 or I would have ordered it as well.

Speaking of Alpha Video I'm probably one of the few who are still interested in maintaining a collection of their DVDs. The quality is typically rock bottom and the vast majority of their offerings are PD material. I like to collect all of the old genre DVDs from companies like Alpha, Diamond, and anyone who produced genre DVDs. It takes up a lot of room but I feel all of those are important to the history of collecting genre movies and they're worth hanging onto. Most people have probably upgraded well past those Alphas. Even Mill Creek PD Box Sets are an upgrade because of the space-saving aspect. I also like to collect the various box sets from companies like Mill Creek, Brentwood/BCI, St. Claire Vision, TGG, etc. All of this results in a ridiculous amount of film duplication. I'm too much of a packrat I guess.  ;D

I bought them around 6 years ago. The boxed items came from the same guy who had a large collection of HI items he was selling. I bought the Grenade Pistol from him and he messaged me about buying more. He sold me the boxed Helmet for $125 outside of eBay. I would have bought many more of his boxed HI items but I just didn't have the money. Couldn't pass up the helmet for that though. He also had a nice boxed Torpedo Tank he was willing to sell me for $400 but I just couldn't swing it at the time. The smaller gun was purchased not long after from another eBay seller.

Just before the 1963 Xmas season Remco released a Supercar loosely resembling the Mike Mercury piloted Super Car from the popular Gerry Anderson produced TV show:

Within a year or two Remco spiffed up the presentation of its Supercar with a fancier more colourful bubble box:

Standard Plastics Products produced several nifty Fireball XL5 items. One was this cool binder suitable for school or office use:

Plus two different Fireball XL5 wallets. The first was a boys' wallet featuring Steve Zodiac:

The second was a girls' wallet featuring Dr. Venus:

The girls' wallet is perhaps even more appealing to me as an adult enthusiast than is the boys' wallet.

These Space Raiders made by Diener were a very popular toy in McDonald's Happy Meals in the mid to late seventies:

Diener also subsequently marketed the Space Raiders as rack toys in the form of erasers:

I never knew that McDonald's had them.  I used to buy them from TG&Y in the mid 70s.  I still have a green and a pink Altair rocket, and maybe a couple of the others in storage.  I wish I could mold one of the rockets to make a resin copy, but it would probably destroy the eraser.

A series of soft rubbery Space Creatures produced by Diener were included as part of McDonald's Happy Meals shortly after the Space Invaders:

Vampire Bat Creature
Insectman
Tree Trunk Monster
Veined Cranium Creature
Winged Amphibian Creature
Horned Cyclops
Gill Face Creature
Lizard Man

Each figure was issued in multiple colours including orange, yellow, green, blue and brown. Diener also issued these figures as Erasers packaged in carded rack toys format:

Diener also issued these figures under the name Alien Creatures as carded rack toys:

And loose in clear plastic bins:

The Alien Creatures were issued in different colours including a light purple, a grey and in different shades of yellow and green than were the Space Creatures. (I have my doubts as to whether the clear plastic bin above actually contains Alien Creatures.  It could have been filled for photo purposes with Space Creatures from Happy Meals.)

The only questions are whether the figures were available in Happy Meals before or after they were issued as rack toys, and whether the rubber of the figures found in Happy Meals was actually harder than when the figures were released by Diener as Erasers.

Here's a very good article on the Diener Space Creatures that were included in McDonald's Happy Meals:

The best and most detailed description of the Diener Space Creatures may perhaps be on this Little Weirdos (http://www.littleweirdos.net/2013/11/diener-space-creatures-revisited.html) site.

I bought this model kit a few months ago at my local hobby shop, Wheels and Wings:

I'm a big fan of the Romulans so I couldn't resist this re-issue in a tin even though I already have the original in my model kit collection!

I'm going to start looking around for a kit of this later variant of a Romulan Warbird:

It's very well designed for confronting any marauding Federation or Bajoran imperialists.

These are pretty cool, reminds me of M.U.S.C.L.E. figures.
