Title: Check Out These Monster Toy Photo's
Post by: Monolith on June 14, 2012, 03:47:30 PM
Some of my toys were begging to be photographed, so I thought you might like to look at them.

This first photo is a 1963 blue Marx Hunchback.

This is a 1963 blue Marx Frankenstein.

This is a 1963 blue Marx Creature. For this photo I manipulated the contrast and the colors.

This is one of my favorites. This is the same blue Creature. I manipulated the background, contrast, and color.

This is a manipulated 1963 blue Marx Wolf Man.

Here is my 1963 blue Marx Phantom. I manipulated the contrast and colors.

Here's another favorite. Its a manipulated photo of my 1963 blue Marx Mummy. I can feel his curse!

And this is a close-up I took of a '60's Creature coppersmith plaque. I played with the colors a little bit.

This is the backside of the Creature coppersmith plaque. The copper is very shiny so I reflected some color off it.

This is a close-up of the Frankenstein coppersmith plaque. I manipulated the contrast and colors on this photo.

And here's a close-up of the Dracula coppersmith plaque. I manipulated the contrast and colors.

And this is a photo I took of a life-sized Grim Reaper statue I saw at a flea market. I just thought you might like it.
Let me know what you think. I Hope you liked 'em.

Those photos show a really unique, almost psychedelic style. I really dig 'em! There's a very personal artistic vibe about them. The Creature below the foilage is pretty stunning. I'm also a fan of Raymond Castile's warm, nostalgic style, but this is totally different and just as interesting (in my opinion). The blue Marx Wolf Man with the red background just explodes! I love the Coppersmith Dracula too.

Wow! Thanks for all the great comments, everybody.

Hepcat--- I've never actually used photoshop, I'm not really that computer savvy. With that Creature photo I just took a photo of a blue Marx Creature
in front of this big plant that I have in my front window from a low angle. I actually just held the Creature in one hand and the digital camera in the other
and snapped a few pics of him with the  sunlight coming through. Then I imported the photo to photobucket and they have some new editing stuff where
I increased the contrast so that made it look a little grainy and eliminated a little of the gray tones, then I increased the intensity of the colors, and that's it.

I'm glad everybody liked 'em, I have fun doing them and will do some more, eventually. I'm always taking toy photo's when I have time. Here's one more
I took of the blue Marx Creature.

Those are amazing, especially considering you didn't use photoshop. You really brought out the detailed of the sculpting, and evoked a great mood with each pic. NICE!

Pretty neat photos, especially the Bride pics. Her sculpt is probably the best actor likeness of the Aurora series, but it takes good close-up photography to appreciate it.

How do you get such great detail though? I use a proper Nikkon digital camera and my photos always seem fuzzier than yours.

???

Well, lets see- I always considered myself more of an artist than a photographer and I'm still used to my old 35mm film camera that I've had since I was 13 years old, this digital stuff is new to me but I think the basic principals are the same. Maybe try taking the same photo multiple times but changing the settings on your camera to see if you get better results. Focus has to do with the aperture (the opening that allows light in) and shutter speed (the length
of time the shutter stays open). I don't know if these are adjustable on your camera or not. I don't think they are on mine, but sometimes I take out of focus pictures, too. I think it's because I'm not completely familiar with my digital camera's settings yet. Also make sure to hold the camera as steady as possible, maybe brace your arms on something. Other than that I'm not sure what else you could do to improve focus, maybe search online for focusing tips. Hope that helps.

Gabriel, the same company that made Lone Ranger and Tonto dolls in the '70's made the Monster Machine- It was
a set of five molds and some plaster casting material called "Muck". You could pour the muck into the mold and put it in the caster to set to make plaster busts of five monsters; Frankenstein's monster, Bigfoot, Hornagor, Galaxogg, and
a bust with Dr Jekyll on one side and Mr Hyde on the other. There is a picture of it here...

Wow, more great photos, Monolith! The Jekyll/Hyde is terrific, as is the She-Creature: the close-up is great and the third shot has such size - great effects.

Thanks to all for the comments! I have thought about prints, I also thought about making a book. I have to look into how much it'll cost to do that.

Well, it's been a while since I posted any new photo's. I've got a bunch of new ones to show, so here's the first-
This is a photo of a Bandai Godzilla I took on my back porch...

(http://i853.photobucket.com/albums/ab97/monolith_06/IMG_8303_zps27713811.jpg) (http://s853.photobucket.com/user/monolith_06/media/IMG_8303_zps27713811.jpg.html)

And this is the same Bandai Godzilla, but a different photo with different effects on it...

(http://i853.photobucket.com/albums/ab97/monolith_06/IMG_8304_zps251d5208.jpg) (http://s853.photobucket.com/user/monolith_06/media/IMG_8304_zps251d5208.jpg.html)

This is also the same plastic bandai figure. I was doing this series involving Godzilla with stars...

(http://i853.photobucket.com/albums/ab97/monolith_06/IMG_8314_zps8aa9a0b0.jpg) (http://s853.photobucket.com/user/monolith_06/media/IMG_8314_zps8aa9a0b0.jpg.html)

And here's one more from my Godzilla/stars series. This is the same Bandai figure. Hope you like them.

I have a bunch of new photo's to show, if you want to see them. This is a photo I took of the Neca Exorcist

Hugohernandez, I know exactly which controversial photo you're talking about. I never thought of it when looking at my Creature photo, though, but now that you mention it I can see a similarity.

Here's another "under water" Creature photo. This figure I got off E-bay. It's a custom someone made out of an
Aurora Monsters Of the Movies body with head and arms from a Marx Creature.

It is disturbingly beautiful.

This thread contains some of the best monster toy photography I've ever seen. I especially like the sense of scale you achieve with characters like Godzilla and Ymir. Most of these toys appear to be "life sized," whether that means 6 feet tall or 200 feet tall. My favorites so far are the MPC Pop-Tops, the Frank in the cemetery, all the Godzilla images, the Sideshow Dracula and the Horizon Creature.

"Pro" photographers spend hundreds or thousands of dollars trying to achieve the same results you are getting with what I assume, from your description, is a consumer point-and-shoot camera and some online digital filter effects. It goes to prove that it's not the tools that matter, but the artist who wields them.

Perhaps you could do a "how-to" post similar to what Matt Jaycox did with his Dracula's Daughter custom figures. Show us some raw images, how you choose the one you want, then show what it looks like as you apply different filter effects. Though I wouldn't blame you if you didn't want to reveal what's behind the curtain.

Wow, thanks Ray! That means a lot coming from you- I like your photo's a lot, especially your mask photo's- they're fantastic. I don't mind pulling back the curtain a bit. I'll start off by saying all the photo's in this thread
were taken with a Canon Power shot SD 1000. I bought it for my girlfriend for her birthday about four or so years ago, maybe a bit longer. I got it on sale for around $300. It's small and flat, which is good for getting into tight spaces, which helps sometimes when you're taking pictures of small subjects. Also, all of the subjects in my photo's were lit by sunlight, mostly because it's free and I don't have a lot of money. Also, I have a tripod but I didn't use it for any of the photo's in this thread - the camera was hand- held for every shot here. Sometimes, like in the blue Billiken She-Creature photo above, I'm holding the camera in my right hand and the She-Creature model in my left. I do this so I can get the light to fall on the model in a way that looks interesting. I think two of the most important elements to my photo's are the lighting and the angle. A low camera angle can make the relatively small subject look larger, and the lighting can help give mood.

All of my photo's were edited using pixlr, which is a free online photo editor. I have a lot of photo's stored on photobucket, which used to use pixlr as it's photo editor. Photobucket changed it's editor a while back. When they did this I thought I wasn't going to be able to edit my pics the same way again, because I had only associated pixlr with photobucket, but then I found out pixlr was it's own entity. Just go to pixlr.com to use it. It's not only free, but you don't have to sign up or even sign in. I've never used photoshop because I can't afford it.
I'm sure it's great, though. When you go to pixlr check out pixlr express, it's what I mostly use, it's fast and easy, and fun. There's also pixlr advanced which I've only used a few times. Pixlr advanced is probably a little more like photoshop, but it's more involved and more difficult to use, at least for me because I'm almost computer illiterate.

I don't have many in-between photo's to show because I don't save them during the editing process, if I did I would have waaay too many photo's. But here's the original photo I took of the Billiken She-Creature before any editing. This is the photo at the top of this page all in blue. You can see my apartment behind her, I blurred the background using a blurring tool before I started adding effects. I think I first added some lighting effects, then increased the contrast, then added more saturated colors, then changed it to blues. It's all done in layers a little at a time. Usually it takes me anywhere from an hour to three hours of playing around with each photo. The trick is a lot of experimenting. Try this, try that, try first that ,and then this, try that again. That sort of thing.
I enjoy it and it's fun. If anybody has any questions, just let me know. I'll try to answer them.

Here's one more of the Creature figure with the Aurora body and Marx arms and head. Sometimes when I'm taking a photo I know pretty much what I want the final image to look like. This was one of those times. Since the Creature is in a swimming position I knew I wanted him to look like he's under water swimming up to the surface. I attached a stiff wire to the hole in his foot to support him in this pose and removed the wire in editing.

AMAZING PHOTO.

did you ever try immersing creature in actual liquid?
I was thinking oil would be interesting and probably photograph with more detail than water.

of course it would ruin the creature figure.     I was thinking of all the cool bubbles and swirls you get with oil.

Creature from the Mazola Lagoon.

I do have a fish tank and I was thinking I'd try some pics of a Creature figure under actual water, but I haven't
had a chance to try it yet, and I never thought of oil. I'm sure oil will be a lot messier to deal with but I'm sure it could yield some good results. I was also going to try some photo's of a Creature emerging out of real water, too.

Not really a monster, more of a hero. Jet Jaguar appeared in GODZILLA VS. MEGALON in which he fought Gigan and Megalon alongside Godzilla. this is the Billiken figure which is about a foot tall. Here, I tried to make him look about as big as I could. I didn't do too much editing on this one, just a little. Just thought you might like to see it.

(http://i853.photobucket.com/albums/ab97/monolith_06/new%20album/IMG_8278_zps4f951625.jpg) (http://s853.photobucket.com/user/monolith_06/media/new%20album/IMG_8278_zps4f951625.jpg.html)

Mcdee-- cool. What Frankenstein is that? One can definitely get some great results by playing around with lighting, I do that, too. One time I made a doll of the Hindu goddess Kali and I photographed her with a red light on one side and a green light on the other for some effects. In the '70's I got a 35 mm film camera and would sometimes color the black and white prints when I got them back with watercolors or markers. And a few times I drew on the prints with black ink. But lighting, I would say, can really make or break a photo.

Here's one more of the little five inch die-cast Gort.

Some fun with Microsoft paint. The original photo is first, then the edit. The figures are different sizes, so Kong was not only painted in, but resized.

Nice job on the King Kong vs Godzilla- I know how time-consuming that type of thing can be. I have one of those Bandai Kong's, too, and will be photographing him eventually.

Hepcat-- I'm a Gamera fan, too. I'll be taking some more Gamera photo's eventually, too. Until then, here's one more Billiken Creature.

Yup. It's basically a prepainted vinyl kit. That's how good the sculpt is. Believe it or not it was not for sale but was a prize in those stupid crane/claw machines! They call them UFO Catchers in Japan and they always have very cool figures like this. I have the big Gamera as well as all 6 of the 7 inch Gamera figures sega put out as UFO prizes, several Godzillas and a few Ultramen. Wish they had stuff like that in machines here-can you imagine a nice 12 inch Frankenstein crane prize!

It's been a while since I posted any more of my photo's. There was a while when I wasn't doing any, but I have a few new ones to show. So, here's a photo I took of an Aurora Mummy.

(http://i853.photobucket.com/albums/ab97/monolith_06/Monster%20manipulations/IMG_3082_zps32e652b6.jpg) (http://s853.photobucket.com/user/monolith_06/media/Monster%20manipulations/IMG_3082_zps32e652b6.jpg.html)

I think I made that years ago, then sold it on ebay as I recall.  Over 10 years ago I made it, or someone else did one just like it.  Forgot all about it!

Thanks Mike, glad you like the Ymir.

Mike and Palifan- thanks, I sometimes try to make the photo's look like paintings that could've been done in the '60's. Probably because I'm a big fan of the artists that were painting monsters in the '60's. Also I try to make the viewer feel like they just saw a vintage monster image that they've never seen before with some of my photo's.

Vandor_Zorkov - thanks for making that creature! I bought it off e-bay and I like it! I still have it, although it's packed away in a box right now.

It really is fantastic work, Monolith!

I ran out of room for posters a long time ago, but I'm sure there would be a market for images of this caliber. The book is a great idea, or maybe just a few prints that people could store in a binder. I know we could just print off our own but those of us with ink jet printers would burn through a lot of ink (& money) really quickly. It would be much more economical to have them printed up in quantity and offer them singly, or in a group, with enough of a markup to cover your time and trouble. I know you wouldn't want to gain the attention of Uni and their cadre of blood-sucking lawyers but if just offered on UMA it should go under the radar...that is if you were inclined to go to the trouble of trying to sell them in the first place.

That brings up an interesting question: Would Uni go after someone selling images of toys of their copyrighted characters?

If anyone would it would probably be Uni and Toho. A small time seller would probably just get a Cease And Desist, but if someone were selling a crapload of verboten images on evilBay the witch-hunting lawyers may attack with torture devices at the ready.

Not all that much color, though.

Yes, it is a very subtle and realistic paint job.

No, it is a custom kit bash diorama. Probably some Yagher stuff in there. I think some parts might be recasts, but not sure. It was painted by Dan Fuller.

horrorhunter - The Creature escaping the lava in the Devonian is exactly right! I didn't really plan that from the beginning, but that's how it came out.

marsattacks666 - Thanks!

Hepcat - I think those are my three favorite new ones, too.

the_horror_man - great Frankenstein kit!

Here's a photo I took of the 12" Sideshow Dracula...

Here's a more recent one I did. So, this is a photo I took of a limited edition sculpture of Chernabog--the demon from the Night On Bald Mountain segment of Disney's Fantasia. The sculpture is about two feet tall. I got it at a flea market years ago for a great deal. They are very hard to find and really expensive if you can find one. Anyway, I edited the photo and here it is...

It looks like a painting due to my editing. Here's an unedited (normal) photo i took of the sculpture so you can see what it looks like unedited (un-artsy-like)...
