Collection Corner #86
1977 Don Post Studios "Tor Johnson"

This review had me rapt, thanks! I love those big vinyl TORs.
I bought one new in 1977 and yours looks just like it.

Doh!

Great review! I didn't realize that the Tors were vinyl. Too bad your newer one melted so quickly. It's heartbreaking when that happens.

The only Tor I have is from Death Studios:

Who remembers a horror movie from forty years ago titled The Beast Within?
I haven't watched it since its premiere but there's no forgetting those transformation
scenes. They looked utterly agonizing!
Within a year of its release, a mask of the "cicada monster" was marketed by
Distortions Unlimited. It was created at The Burman Studios who handled FX
work for the movie. Despite that, there was a problem with licensing and
the mask's design had to be modified and its name changed to The Creature >

It was in production for a couple of years but I lost my fondness for mine after castings of
the original became available. I believe there were less than ten made, one of which I
scored in July 1984 >

The only other version I've ever seen is the screen-used stunt mask which was in
a private collection at the time. There's just one shot of it in my archive >

Wow! What a blast from the past!
The cast from the original looks very cool. I wish they were available now.

Not a mask collector myself (simply because I dont take care of them properly and they get destroyed) but I was digging around the attic and found this guy. Im surprised that he looks as good as he does from being stored in a box in the attic. Its probably the "thickest" mask Ive ever had which is one of the reasons he survived. It looks like it has 1/4" or  3/8" thick foam in it. I dont remember where I got it, probably a yard sale for super cheap. Anyway, he is out on display now where he belongs. The tag says 2001 Don Post Studios Inc a subsidiary of The Paper Magic Group.

That's odd because the mask wasn't catalogued until four years later. It must've sold well,
having remained in DP's line to the very end. Let us know what else turns up, scarey1scd.

When it sadly disappeared, the thread had over 32,000 views and over 700 replies.

You fellows who once posted on HMA have really given a boost to the the Masks and Busts forum here on UMA. It used to be a rather quiet semi-neglected part of the forum and now it's one of the most active parts.

:)

Collecting! It's what I do!

I believe that mask was called Smudge. Weird name for a wolf mask but who knows.

So it's a werewolf? With those ears, I thought it was some kind of bat.

Smudge was actually a foam mask introduced in 2005, so the foam inside makes sense. Here is the catalog page where it is advertised as "New" and that is is a foam mask:

I have no idea where the name "Smudge" came from, but here is a pic of the mask with the Spirit Halloween hang tag, calling it "Smudge Wolf", so indeed it is a wolf, although a rather odd looking one.

As far as the 2001 on the tag, they were most likely just using up a run of tags printed years earlier. Pretty common to have an inside tag with a earlier year than the mask was introduced.
Cheers!

I always thought Despot was the coolest of the DP foam masks
