Welcome to Collection Corner!
This thread is a video/photo showcase of members favorite masks in their collections.
You are welcome to shoot a cellphone (or better) video, or take photos of one mask at a time that you are particularly fond of or find interesting, and tell us something about it. Your post doesn't have to be a history lesson, but can be even just a personal account of where, why or how you acquired it, or why it appeals to you. Feel free to post videos, pics or just comment!
Please participate!
Some of you may remember this thread on the HMA.
When it sadly disappeared, the thread had over 32,000 views and over 700 replies.
I won't try to recreate that thread here, but rather start fresh with my most recent video, below. You can always catch up on my videos on the Collection Corner YouTube channel, where you will even find guest appearances by Ed Edmunds, Dr. Lady, Chris Zephro, Tony Zagone and more!

Unfortunately, nobody can. Videos stopped working, on this board, a couple of years ago and nobody seems able to fix it. :(
This is a welcome treat, jupiter2. Your mask critiques were one of our few remaining attractions at the now defunct HMA and I'm happy to see you've made the transition.

It was fairly easy to get at the time and beautifully painted but I ended up parting with it because of the eyes.
At some point, Post Studios started widening the eye trims on all their masks which must've made it easier to see out but lessened the creepiness.
Tor looks way better with pinprick pupils which would never pass safety regulation today, but hey ... wasn't that part of the thrill?

The 2nd Tor looks best. The 1st one looks more like Uncle Fester. ;D

Like the box said, "They were the greatest monster masks of the 1960s". I might add that DP's "Calendar" reissues were also the greatest mask edition
released in modern times. I didn't score mine until well after they were in production but what a thrill to see the GS Frankenstein included after 30+ years.

I foolishly passed on The Wolf Man the year these came out when I found out it was only for display purposes. I was looking for a wearable mask that year and it was much too small for my fat head.
Now you know why I go by the moniker "D'oh!"
Thanks, Sir Maskalot for posting that Frank. It's on my wishlist to acquire all of the re-issues in original boxes, but alas, I don't own any right now. Maybe I never will, but I can dream!

It was curled up at one side. I wedged something inside the box to hold it down and it gradually returned to shape.

That straight edge hairline sorta kills the mask for me. The way they haired the gorilla looks much better. But like you said, I'm sure these are pretty affordable.

I've never watched RZ's H2 but find your mask a good deal more interesting than the bland and pasty Kirk-face of previous movies in the franchise. The eye mesh is a nice creepy touch.
I'm in the camp of hating the Rob Zombie movies, but did like what they did for the mask in his H1. Frankly, I found the aging more convincing there than in the Halloween 2 reboot from 2018.
In any event, great to see a new review, Jupiter!
I just scored this beauty off eBay today!
1988 Don Post Karloff Frankenstein finished by Sam McCain. It will be an upgrade from my rotted out copy.
Sam McCain was a great painter, one of the best that Don Post Studios ever had. I was never able to get a Frankenstein mask
from that batch he painted back in 1989 (they were only sold at Universal Studios Florida) but based on photos I've seen, yours
looks just like them. Congratulations, vader45.
He was not cheap at $450 but that was a price I was willing to pay. Then the crooks who run Ohio took $33 in internet sales tax. I think that's utterly ridiculous they charge internet tax, where is the money going? Does Ohio have owners stock on the Internet?
But it sure beats out my rotted out copy I had for a few years.
Oh man, that's a nice one!
8)
Here he is! Are we sure it's a McCain copy? It's different then my rotted copy that he himself confirmed that he painted, years ago before he passed.
None the less it's in subperb condition for its age and still tagged!
I don't think Sam was adding that extreme infection around the gashes back then. Either way, here's a photo of a Frankenstein
that he indisputably painted at DPS in 1989. You make the call, vader45 >

Interesting. That photo looks exactly like the one that just got in the mail. The other has the extra yellow and different hairline. But Sam said he painted that one. IDK now. Lol
One thing to note is, the rotted one has the 1962 copy right stamp while the other has no stamp.
Tag has a Morris Costumes price tag of $70.00. even this mask fetched a premium price back then!
P.S. a simple Google search told me the yellow scar is on the 1983 Frankenstein. The stock photo 100% matches mine. I think Sam was just a little mistaken. Glad that's cleared up!
Great Frank! I have one of Sam's Myers masks (Devious). He did great work.

It's a cool Malone design which I used to see in Halloween stores around town, always liked it until they bloodied it up.
Trick or Treat Studios catalogs it as "Titan Find Thanatoid". I searched that title and found poster art depicting this

well enough to ask him, inquiring minds want to know. Thanks for the review, jupiter2. I always enjoy them.

I should probably be ashamed to admit it but I just watched the "Pickman's Model" episode of
1971's Night Gallery today, for the first time ever. 'Well acted, atmospheric, great suspenseful
build-up to the monster's climactic rampage. The monster itself is literally a patchwork of
other monster suits but its reveal is quite effective in the context of the story.
It got me to reminiscing about the mask I once had back in 1983 >

Every time you turn around prices have shot up on something that used to be cheap just the other day, or at least it seems that way. (https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1024x768q90/923/TeSOcP.jpg)
It's an oversized flier, meant to be folded up and mailed, with space for an address label on the reverse side.
It's also the only catalog from which I can proudly claim to have owned copies of every single mask pictured.
The first two I ordered were Mutation I and Were Jaguar. Both arrived in March 1980 and so began my
indulgence as a Distortions collector >

No sooner had that first pair arrived, it was time to order the next two on my Distortions want list. Time Traveler and Human Error both reached me before month's end >

By April 1980 it was still early enough in the limited edition to reserve copy #13, the only appropriate number for such an unlucky character.

Mr Chiodo designed some fantastic characters for Illusive Concepts and Mask Illusions before that. Some of
the stuff in early Great CoverUp catalogs looks like his work too. Someday, their stories must be told.
That mask is wicked impressive!

This character debuted as "Alien" in 1975. A fellow collector later dubbed it "905 Alien",
after its Don Post catalog number, to distinguish it from all the other alien masks that
have invaded since.

darker and darker. Being new to our world, perhaps they didn't react well to sunshine >

Of the sixteen spooks inside (yes, I remember them all vividly) only three really scared me,

the better, which can be traced directly back to that nostalgic childhood trauma.

Way awesome!🤘🏻
Back in 1984 I scored an amazing custom ET head, adapted from the movie mold.
It was so big, I could've easily worn it but for its skinny little neck. Trying to work
my head through there probably would've killed me! I owned hundreds of other
masks at the time and was never able to make room for this, nor did it fit in with
the prevailing monster theme. Later that same year, ET "found home" in an east coast collection >

Nowadays I'm quite content with the retail version from Don Post Studios, especially after
having it repainted. For anyone questioning my change of mind on the character, I now
value this more as a DPS mask than a memento from the popular movie >

Great likeness of James Arness. He was 6'7" which I'm sure had a lot to do with his being cast as The Thing.

zippered back slit, and I love the way it smelled (no, not like brimstone).

Nearly all of the Mr HYDE masks I've ever owned have been Don Post versions.
Having missed out on The Halloween Society's edition, my consolation prize was
to be this alternate of the 1931 makeup. Sculpted at Alvarez Wax Models, I bought
one as a raw casting and hired somebody to finish it for me. Several years later, I
finally did score an HS edition and sold this one within months to a collector in Japan.

David Ayres is a seasoned makeup effects artist who dabbles in maskmaking
and shares his work with collectors. Early in 1979 I discovered the Ayres Studio
through a magazine ad and promptly sent away for one of his catalogs >

I scored several more of his creations via mail order over the next year or so but that MORNAC,
with its withered face and loaf-like cranium, remains my favorite.

Dave's Mornak mask makes a brief appearance in the 1983 Disney/Ray Bradbury movie, Something Wicked This Way Comes. He's one of Mister Dark's minions in the parade through the town. Dave Ayres also sculpted the Quasimodo Hunchback mask for DPS back in 1975. Thanks for the memories, Sir!
Thanks for the info, zotzcoin. Somebody once pointed out to me another of David's masks in that scene
but we haven't spotted the Mornac yet.
I've had this mysterious latex bust in my collection for over ten years and am still unsure of its provenance.
The face is said to be that of the Phantom from Universal's Man of a Thousand Faces (1957) but the
neck and ears were added on much later. Its only other known appearance was in a Thriller episode called
"The Purple Room" which I haven't seen yet. The bust remains unfinished pending verification of its identity.

tops them all. I've burned through at least six copies over the years but this is the only one
I can still wear >

It's the prototype makeup of the Phantom from "Man Of A Thousand Faces". I also have a copy with the added neck but without the ears. I thought it was someone at Don Post that added the neck but that was never confirmed.
I think Dave Ayres may be the DPS person to add the extended neck to that Phantom. It looks like his sculpting style. I'm not sure if I'm guessing or remembering...?
Nice looking Newman Phantom in the above pictures! I've always liked that version.

As pertains to DPS legend and lore, I'd rate your guesses over most anyone else's.
So it's the "prototype makeup", not the screen-used final? That settles some of the confusion.

There exists a companion piece to this Cagney Phantom, said to be even more rare.
Portions of it may have been incorporated directly onto DP's retail version of the
"Calendar" Hunchback. Thank goodness someone bothered to preserve such artifacts

Collectors who've seen this excellent book probably recognize its cover art as depicting
a Distortions alien mask from the early 1980s >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/827/catalogcreeton.png)
I scored a first edition CREETON way back then, reportedly cast from the master mold >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/829/ducreeton.png)
Said mold was beset with problems from the start but were ultimately mended, the character
becoming a great favorite of its creator Ed Edmunds and collaborator Jordu Schell.
I only ever owned one of the masks pictured on this page. Can you guess which one?
According to Lee Lambert's book, Ed Edmunds was disappointed with his SYCRON character.
However, I think it's one of the scariest aliens he ever created! I got mine in June 1982,
first year of issue >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/98/sycrontu9.png)
It was catalogued for another two years afterwards, then vanished until being resculpted for
Distortions' "Resurrection Series". To me, it never needed any such makeover. That original
version is quite horrific enough.

a cow skull, a pterodactyl, and Giger's Alien >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/923/8as47i.jpg)
Last catalogued in the 1980s, I scored my first one (seen above) in June 2008. Ten years later
I got a copy from the metallic edition created exclusively for attendees of MaskFest >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/923/7g7vbf.jpg) (https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/923/kd95Zy.jpg)
This and the Sycron are hardly more than fossil skulls. 'Makes me wonder what a "fleshed out" version of each would look like.
That might make for an intriguing new mask series from Distortions ...
Can't get enough of those Distortions. Back in the early 1980s they secured licensing to market
wearable products from the sci fi classic ALIEN. The T-shirt was just amazing >

Around the same time, full sized castings of the adult ALIEN mask were also catalogued >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/685/aliencatpage.png)
For this edition, I'm not sure if Distortions had the original mold or made their own
from the screen-used stunt head shown here >

I bought those from Dennis Druktenis back around 2002. I can't remember what the Shock Monster cost (probably around $30-$40), but the DPS reissue Dracula was $50 and the DPS reissue Mole People was $40. They have the original tags but no boxes. The DPS Creature mask I bought from him in the same order was $100 and came with the box.

Cool!
Wow, 70 bucks for the Shock Monster. It seems like I gave less than that for it, but I could be wrong. Maybe he cut the price for one of his "Scarehouse" sales. Anyway, I'm sure about the prices I paid him for the DPS reissues- $40 for Mole People, $50 for Dracula, $50 for Metaluna Mutant, and $100 for the Creature. They all came new with tags and the Creature came in the stylized box. Back around that same time I ordered the Kelly Mann reissue of Verne Langdon's Zombie mask from an ad in the back of Scary Monsters. It seems like it was around $140 but I may not be remembering that right. I do remember it being somewhat expensive but I had to have it because I loved the cover of the 1972 Creepy Annual and seeing those Langdon Zombie mask ads from the early '70s. I received #15/30.
I used to buy monster junk from Dennis all the time. I bought a copy of all of his mags, even the limited issues, and bought a lot of stuff at great prices from his "scarehouse" sales. I met him at the 2001 Monster Bash. I have Scary Monsters junk all over the house. I quit buying the mag when it changed ownership though, so I have everything up to issue 100. That was about the time I quit buying new monster mags, except for The Creeps, and now Warrant's new title Vampiress Carmilla.

It's a fun mask, but it should have green highlights on the boils and oozing sores for the chlorophyll poisoning. For TOTS prices though it's pretty cool.
I'm a huge Blood Island fan, having seen
Brides Of Blood and
Mad Doctor Of Blood Island on Shock Theater (Chattanooga) back in the '70s,
uncut. ;D Of course the Beast Of Blood or Chlorophyll Monster looked a little different in the movie
Beast Of Blood than he did in
Mad Doctor Of Blood Island, and it was a totally different monster in
Brides, but it's all part of the Blood Island Trilogy. No direct continuity between
Brides and
Mad Doctor (except for Hemisphere Pictures, John Ashley, and the Island). But
Beast is a true sequel to
Mad Doctor storywise.

Collection Corner #81
2018 Zagone Studios "Sentinel"
It's a good scary face, one of my favorites from the early BeSomethingStudios line.
Why did they try to pass it off as an alien, though? It always struck me as more of a
Gothic demon. Anyhow, thanks for the fun review, jupiter2.
Good question! I don't really see the "alien" aspect to it either, but that's what they say!
"Full Latex Mask of a tan alien creature or monster with pointy teeth.
The Original Sentinel sculpted by BYBY A Be Something Studios original circa 1979. This beauty is a brown finish to the classic look."

Here's my latest score, MR SPOCK as depicted in 1979's Star Trek ~ The Motion Picture >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/922/Fk8nPI.jpg)
I believe this licensed series of masks was only available for one year from Post Studios >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/593/scan2hn.jpg)
The forty-year-old latex was pretty flimsy so I reinforced it from the inside with insulation tape.
It seems to work well for this purpose with one side really sticky, the other a bendable foil.
There's a layer of foam in-between so it's like a poor man's foam-fill but stiff enough to smooth
out any ripples in the rubber.
It's the last mask I really wanted for my small but select Star Trek collection.
Spock's in great shape!
Great looking copy of that mask, Sir! As I recall, Bill Malone sculpted that Spock from scratch, as opposed to using the Nimoy life cast as he did for the '75 version. The old Spock, like the Captain Kirk mask, was kind of a tight fit for most people's heads. I think Bill also sculpted the Vulcan, and Jim Leonard sculpted the Klingon. Congrats on having such a nice piece!
It's a beautiful mask and very interesting technique with the insulation tape!

Folklore has it that if a Metaluna Mutant pops up and sees its own reflection, we're in for a nuclear winter!
Relax, I just made that up to scare you but what better lead-in to my discussion of the DPS MUTANT masks I've owned over the years.
First came this one in the early 1970s. It made several appearances in my amateur monster movies of the period >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/88/mutantrooflr8.jpg) (https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/99/mutantbrickzn2.jpg) (https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/293/mutantgornfaceoff.jpg)
Later in the decade, another turned up for sale at a Hollywood memorabilia shop. I promptly purchased it, together with the old style claws >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/252/lawnmutant.jpg) (https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/145/hbpmutantsidenv4.jpg) (https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/63/hbpmutantfv6.png)
I had a third copy in the early '80s but could only find one old photo of it and not a very good one at that >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/401/scan2rs.jpg)
Meanwhile, the character had been resculpted for its 1975 re-release from Post Studios. This "Malonian" MUTANT was
not in production for more than a year or two. I had a really nice one for a while which I'd customized with veinage in the eyes >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/216/mutanttwozl0.png)
Those preceding four masks left my collection decades ago but three others remain with me today, including a movie mold original.
You'll meet all three in my next post so keep watching the skies ... I said skies, not thighs!
I'm not big on alien masks but this one along with Ridley Scott's Alien are my 2 favorites. Back then it was kind of the thing to have aliens with what appeared to have exposed brains. I remember the old Topps trading cards that had a similar look. I was repulsed and drawn to them at the same time. That's horror done right.

Amen

Following up on my previous post, here are the three Metaluna Mutant masks currently occupying my collection:
When Dr Shocker dissolved his House of Horror some years ago, I was fortunate to acquire his exceptional copy of the "Malonian" version.
The paint is all mid-1970s factory stock, no custom touches but for some yellow fabric I used to seal its eye slits >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/46/shockermutant.jpg) (https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/684/blumutantclaws.png)
Twenty years ago Post Studios was marketing their spectacular "Calendar" reissue. The edition was cast using molds developed from
Universal's original. It's quite a privilege owning a movie costume element from 1955's This Island Earth. The head came partially
foam-filled with shiny plastic lenses in both eyes >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/812/scan123360001.jpg)
Of course, the ultimate Mutant collectible would be a casting direct from Universal's staff shop mold which Post Studios had custody of
since the 1960s. Availability has been extremely limited over the decades and seems to coincide with periods during which DPS is
licensed to market their smaller retail versions. I scored mine in 1999 while production on the "Calendar" reissue was in full swing.
Years later, movie mold claws were offered as an independent edition. It makes for an impressive set but requires extra display space.
Included is a photo of the head with a fellow collector, no small man himself, to give you a sense of its enormity >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/924/FOhZf7.jpg) (https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/922/A9iUPk.jpg) (https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/90/petewithmutantqg2.png)
I added more Trick Or Treat Studios masks to my collection:
I had to purchase the Hammer Mummy from an eBay seller since it was sold out on the TOTS website. Thanks to David Lady and his "Creepy Cheapies" episode for making this mask a must-have for me.
I also ordered the mask TOTS called the "Blue Banshee" (based on the Gayle House Ghoul) but I received a refund and the explanation that it wasn't available. I checked the TOTS website and there was no sign of the Blue Banshee. I couldn't even find an eBay listing for it. Weird. It's like it just slipped out of existence. Very Twilight Zone-esque. ???
"And now for something completely different"...well, somewhat different anyway. Monsters sporting Roth Surfer Helmets:

Somehow, the helmeted Karloff now looks like Herman Munster.

Here's a strange Don Post mask I scored off eBay five years ago. It was only catalogued once, back in 1989 >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/905/bxqlzj.jpg)
The inspiration for its design is fairly obvious if you've seen the movie "Beetlejuice" but I like it anyway, just as a stand-alone spooky-ooky character >

My self being a Beetlejuice fan. I have never seen this mask before. Interesting.
Wow, I've never seen a copy of that. Interesting to see the production paint.

House of Horror Studios didn't create their FLY masks as exact likenesses of 1958's movie makeup.
They may have offered as many as five different versions but I only ever owned the first three.
Their 1980 premiere model featured separately inserted feelers and vacuum-formed plastic eye lenses,
all for only $38 retail >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/216/hohflyonexu7.png)
As classic sci fi, I respect George Langelaan's story so much that there just had to be some representation
of his title character in my collection. I'll buzz you with the next two HoHS mask versions in a few days.
8 years ago, I picked up a Buzz mask from Specter Studios. I added the hair and feathers myself:
(https://live.staticflickr.com/4370/35888267934_ab4def9fdf.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/WFjKJf)
I looked at the Don Post one at the time, and found it horribly thin. The Buzz is a really nice thickness. Too bad Specter is no longer around.
'Great FLY mask, Doh, even better since you added the appendages.
Version #2 of House of Horror's FLY mask took wing in 1981. Gone were the plastic lenses
but its newly designed eyes gave off an opalescent effect. It was also a full overhead mask
while the previous version had a fabric fur hood.
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/23/hohflytwo.png) (https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/320x240q90/922/GuY2rx.jpg)
Thanks, Sir! I also made my own claw out of an oven mitt wrapped in foam rubber, then covered in hair.
I couldn't find a tan lab coat so dyed a white one:
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50819547623_5e7a93442f.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2kqKsYX)
I treated myself to a Christmas mask: the host from Creepshow (TOTS):
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50823780292_924e882d81.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2kr8ad1)
Nice sculpt and paint, but this thing is stupidly small! It's a half mask with a strap that's supposed to hold it in place -- but I can barely get it on my head. I'd swear it was made for a child. The latex is somewhat thin, too. I'll hold onto it, but honestly not really worth the price.
The half mask and strap reason is why i passed on the EC Ghoulunatics. They seemed cheap.
Doh, that Creepshow "puppet" is scary as hell. Since it doesn't fit you well, it should make a great Halloween prop.
Either that or give it a decent burial.
As to your Fly outfit, seeing the whole ensemble reminds me of the story's deeper message of "science gone wrong".
It could happen to any of us!
Later in 1981, House of Horror Studios released their third and what must've been super-deluxe FLY mask.
It featured extra appendages, more hair tufts, vacuum-formed plastic eyes, plus an extended neck bib >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/100/hohflypf2.png)
I remember there being a fourth HoHS Fly produced sometime afterwards but I never got a copy. It wasn't until 1986
that HoH's BUGG mask infested my collection which, although clearly insectoid, was not a Fly >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/216/hohbuggib1.png)
Nice adds! I was going to try and attach some sort of plastic lenses to my Fly mask, but wasn't clever enough to figure out how. Maybe I'll make it a retirement project... when I retire.

Of the Star Trek monster masks initially offered by Post Studios in their 1976 catalog,
this one was my favorite >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/148/saltvampcatpic.png)
To me it just looks the most extra-terrestrial of the three. I got a first edition that January >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/824/myfirstsaltvamp.jpg)
Sometime later DPS changed up the colors and I got one of those versions too
although I can't recall exactly when >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/90/saltvampgreen.png)
In January 2003 I scored a third copy. It's cast from the DPS mold, came with attached DPS tag,
but released through Rubie's Costumes. 'Some weird arrangement between the two companies
but hardly more weird than the character itself. This salty ol' wench has my heart anyway >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/853/saltvamplatest.png)
I totally dig that Salt Vampire mask.
Pablo Picasso might've saluted the Ed French Studios for creating this wacky mask.
It's been known variously as "Disorganized", "Mixed up face", and "Geek Maggot Bingo"
after a movie in which it appeared. I can't recall where I first saw the above portrait
but it circulated through genre magazines of the early 1980s. By summer '83 I had
scored a casting of my own >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/100/disorganizedfr6.png)
Later, Death Studios offered a more wearable resculpt but it's rare to find either version
in private collections nowadays. 'Just another forgotten horror from the early years of
independent mask-making.
As a pre-teen kid in the 1960s and desperate to own a Don Post Studios GORILLA mask,
I actually made a facsimile using pastels on construction paper to fill the void on my
monster room shelf >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/48/paperpastelaperl1.png)
It wasn't until the early 1970s that the genuine article came along. I had the hands and feet too,
plus my seamstress Auntie stitched together a shaggy ape suit for me.
My mask soon began falling apart from constant use/abuse. Thankfully, the character remained
in production at DPS and available for sale at my three favorite shops through the mid '70s.
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/525/bertsgorilla.jpg) (https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/661/Foxrj7.jpg) (https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/505/hwoodtoysapesy3.jpg)
I got a second copy while the getting was good ...
... and so for a time nearly fifty years ago, I had two original DPS GORILLA masks >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/82/twowallapesum5.jpg) (https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/505/gorillasroofse4.jpg)
Both have long since been consigned to ape mask eternity but I still have a really nice copy of the Retro Line version,
scored in October 2000. At my age, I can't be suiting up anymore but did wear the mask by itself on a few occasions >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/42/hwoodapeplusstarlet.png) (https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/32/ja6y.jpg)
Great pics! Just love that gorilla!
Great apes! The only ape I have is the TOTS Kong -- which is quite good.

That is one gruesome character. I'd rather lock lips with Mason Verger than "Pestilence". Thanks for reviewing, jupiter2, always a treat.
VERY creepy mask! The wispy hair works really well, in spite of how it's glued onto the top of the head.
Having never been an avid reader of Creepy or Eerie comics, I mainly recognized the two horror hosts
as really cool Don Post masks. They haven't been catalogued together since the 1970s >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/76/catpagegorillavy9.png)
All my favorite shops carried them back then, displayed singly and as a team. Can you make out that price tag? Only $14.95!

They were produced with the same quality as DP's high-end masks but retailed for less than half as much.
By summer of 1975, I'd adopted my first pair >

Last Sunday I scored a few masks from the estate sale of our late friend Gory Glenn.
One was his ToTS Beast of Blood which I now consider one of the top three scariest masks in my collection!

Back in the 1990s Paper Magic Group offered a line of masks depicting Universal's classic monsters >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/923/FnyvCL.jpg)
Glenn had the good taste to acquire a few of them including The Mummy, my favorite of the series.
His copy now resides in my collection. That thing on top that looks like a visor is actually its attached header card
showing the Universal Monsters logo, care and safety info, and the retail price: only $14.99 >

There was one more mask score from the weekend, related to the above character, which I think was
one of Glenn's prized pieces. I can't reveal it just yet because it's getting sent off for a custom finish.
Once completed, I'll check back in to scare you with it!

Sorry to hear of his passing, I was not aware of that.

for only three years by Post Studios >

except for adding that eye insert >

Fun stuff, Sir M.! The Quasimodo was sculpted by Bill Malone. Bill also blocked out the sculpt on the 800 Line version, and it was finished by Bob Short. Bob did the sculpt on the little 150 Line Phantom. I can't remember if Bob also did the small Quasi, or if it was ever produced? I don't think it was, but that was a loooonnng time ago!
Great pics! I've never owned a Quasimodo, but I would love to.

This dinky little DEVIL has always been my favorite character from Don Post's 300 line of
thinly cast full-overhead masks. I don't know if production dates back as far as the 1960s
but I scored my first copy in February 1973, likely because it reminded me of that tumescent
Pazuzu statue seen in "The Exorcist".
Versions of it remained in production all through the 1970s and '80s. Back then, they were easy

private collections. I urge everybody who owns one to take whatever steps necessary to preserve them.

Wonderful masks

scored at auction in September 2013 >

It was only catalogued for one year as a commercial product. We can only imagine the

Devil mask lurking beneath >

Great Devil's!
I did have a DP 300 Devil at one time. We put if on one of our neighbor's kids for fun (he was about 4). He got so scared at everyone's reaction to him that he grabbed it by the eyeholes and tore it into two pieces getting it off! :)

Glad you're back doing reviews, jupiter!
Fun mask, but I wish they would've gone all-out in the likeness department. Also, what an odd choice to make the face tiny and have you see out the hairline. Still, nice review.

That mask would've definitely caught my eye if I'd ever seen it in a Halloween store.
You're fortunate to have found one, jupiter2. Thanks for the fun review. Whoever conceived it
for DPS must've known and loved "Trilogy of Terror". That movie haunted my dreams for years
after first watching it. A dealer I knew had a replica of the Zuni doll for sale at a convention
but he had trouble all weekend getting it to stay standing on his table. At one point, some fans
were looking at it as it fell over and they all scattered in a panic, screaming "it's alive, it's alive!"

So here it is, the third of my new scores from Gory Glenn's estate sale: a foamed master casting of
The MUMMY, released as a licensed wearable mask by Paper Magic Group in the 1990s >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/923/X8d5YL.jpg)
The existence of an unpainted polyfoam-filled master is very unusual outside of a production facility.
They're meant for in-house use only and typically cast from first generation (master) molds.
The mold itself was likely destroyed after this posterity master was cast. Today it's all that remains
of the sculptor's original vision >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/923/0xpq4h.jpg)
When deciding on a finish for it, I chose the PMG catalog image to submit as reference ...
but that blazing blue eye had to go >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/924/Ti3KY4.jpg)
Instead, I asked my painter to recreate the blacked-out glare of Kharis as depicted in 1940's
"The Mummy's Hand". It came out super creepy, dark as the tomb itself >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/923/F635VL.jpg)
Mounted on a custom display base it's now quite a show piece, all I could ever want in
a Universal MUMMY monster. Maybe you'll see it at one of my convention exhibits someday.

Fantastic looking piece and thanks for the back story, I still miss Glenn here on the boards.
That dark eye looks so much better than the blue. Great job!
Still missing Glenn. We did some email exchanges over the brief time I knew him so I cherish those.
«E» «X» «C» «E» «L» «L» «E» «N» «T» design choices (!!)

Sculpture-wise, this foam-filled master casting has maybe even More subtle, delicate details (*e.g.: the slicked-back hairline) than the Don Post Calendar classic mask!

Thanks for that fine compliment, Monster Matt, although Mr Ackerman had masks I could only dream of owning. Speaking of which:

a sought-after collectible, this by way of its appearance in the Halloween movie series.

Long before that, they were fairly easy to get at retail shops since they only cost $8.95 >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/911/HwLE2A.jpg)
I scored my first one in February 1973. Being cast in durable vinyl, it looks as good now
as it did then >

Four years later, DPS catalogued their premiere line of luminous masks. The old style Skull was
first to be developed for the series. The other characters followed soon after >

I might never hear of scary cool masks like this without your fun reviews, jupiter2.
They often leave me trying to imagine some backstory into the characters: what evil deeds
they've committed, the dark worlds they inhabit, and especially who I would like to scare
with their help! >:D
Thank you!
Glad you're reviewing again, Jupiter! And what an obscure pun to name that mask:

Funny that you should mention that. I didn't think of it until after I completed filming, and wondered if I was the only one who didn't realize it! I would have referenced it in the video, if I had noticed sooner. It does fit in with the Zagone/Be Something fondness of pun-naming some of their masks.

I scored my first edition copy of NOCTURNAL in September 1982.
Below, the mask as it debuted in Distortions Unlimited's catalogue and a couple of
production samples photographed at the facility. Those were the days when using
actual yak hair on masks was still practical. It's become too expensive now.

This being my 666th post, we just have to discuss something demonic: Don Post's 900 line DEMON !
I've owned five copies since its debut in their 1976 catalog >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/538/mGcXGv.png)
In January of that year, I scored a first edition copy. This is the first pic I ever took of it >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/924/x3SRUu.jpg)
DEMON was my favorite of all those early 900 series characters.
For one shot, I even recreated the DPS catalog image with shaggy tunic and chains >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/181/demonchainskz9.png)
It was rather thinly cast and only survived a few more years in my possession, counting the abuse
it endured in my amateur monster movies of the 1970s >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/534/beastdemon.jpg) (https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/291/bonniepronedark.jpg) (https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/535/demonloomstwo.jpg)

Two years later I got Dr Shocker's personal copy from his House of Horrors, a 1987 version with
alternate paint scheme. It was only in fair condition but these original reds are really scarce >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/824/dpsreddemon.png)
During 2015/2016 I scored my last two copies in rapid succession,
the first being a 2001 Retro line reissue ...
... but the best was yet to come: within a year, a special collector's edition was made available with
custom Tharp finish! Mine was painted up like my 1987 original red with those creepy blank eyes.
After this, there'll be no need for any more >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/924/nw9oAI.jpg)
I've finally got enough "DEMONs running all through me"!
That's a helluva good collection of demon masks!
Awesome demon masks! Every time you post it's a historic set of photos that we will never see anywhere else. Thank you so much for posting these
I've always regarded the monster from this movie as one of
the scariest-looking faces of the 1950s >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/320x240q90/922/Jf28XB.jpg)
As a kid I often confused it with the monster from "War of the Colossal Beast"
even though both are seen clearly and frequently in their respective movies.
Any remaining confusion vanished forever once independent artists began
creating masks of the characters. There's no better way to get familiar with
a monster than while it's right in your face! Come October 1994 I scored my
first CYCLOPS mask, created by one of the fine sculptors at Alvarez Wax Models >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/100/awmcyclopsgy3.png)
I wore it to a few masquerades and it stood unchallenged in my collection
for twelve years until VXXFX unleashed their version. Upon getting one, I
resolved never to wear it but keep it on prominent display in pristine condition
at all times ... and so it remains to this day >

which debuted in their 1976 catalog >

I actually have a shot of prototypes taken at Post Studios' R & D lab from around that time.

My first edition copy appears on film for the first time, January 1976 >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/924/X4e4Q4.jpg)
DPS added hair to their edition, reportedly to avert copyright challenges
from the producers of "7th Voyage" >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/39/tonyvcyclops.png)
The character remained in production for another year then vanished, later to be
reissued as a resized version in 1986 >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/843/p7gr.jpg)
I never got one until long after it was re-reissued for the 2000 Retro Line. Oddly enough,
that catalog page was not included at "The Blood-Curdling Blog of Monster Masks" where
I do much of my research. I've reproduced it here for you >

Long-time readers of Famous Monsters magazine have got to remember seeing this
horrific deathshead in its pages. If memory serves, one early issue features a pictorial
of its creation from start to finish. I always thought it would make a terror-ific mask
but the few attempts I've seen over the years came up lacking. That was before
Death Studios released their version in the late 1990s >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/923/hAaFVE.jpg)
The exact year must've been '99 since I scored my first edition copy that September.
I found a pair of matching hands and wore it to one wild masquerade party, vowing
afterwards to preserve it for display purposes exclusively. Today, it remains one
of the scariest masks I've ever owned >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/922/6cyL72.jpg)
^ Here's a new score from earlier this month. I don't know much about its history
since someone else owned it before me but it's a great likeness of Imhotep
created by Daniel Horne, polyfoam-filled and autographed on the inside. I only
own one other mask by him and really should have more. It was a sad day for
collectors when he retired from mask making some years ago.

Yes, I spend most of my time in there!
Don't do much with the Topstones, other than keeping them out of direct sunlight. I know some people keep their masks packed away in darkness, but for me, I feel that life is short and I would rather be surrounded by the things that I love while I'm here. :)

The only Tor I have is from Death Studios:

Who remembers a horror movie from forty years ago titled The Beast Within?
I haven't watched it since its premiere but there's no forgetting those transformation
scenes. They looked utterly agonizing!
Within a year of its release, a mask of the "cicada monster" was marketed by
Distortions Unlimited. It was created at The Burman Studios who handled FX
work for the movie. Despite that, there was a problem with licensing and
the mask's design had to be modified and its name changed to The Creature >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/154/burmancreature.png)
It was in production for a couple of years but I lost my fondness for mine after castings of
the original became available. I believe there were less than ten made, one of which I
scored in July 1984 >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/534/beastwithin.png)
The only other version I've ever seen is the screen-used stunt mask which was in
a private collection at the time. There's just one shot of it in my archive >

Wow! What a blast from the past!
The cast from the original looks very cool. I wish they were available now.
Not a mask collector myself (simply because I dont take care of them properly and they get destroyed) but I was digging around the attic and found this guy. Im surprised that he looks as good as he does from being stored in a box in the attic. Its probably the "thickest" mask Ive ever had which is one of the reasons he survived. It looks like it has 1/4" or 3/8" thick foam in it. I dont remember where I got it, probably a yard sale for super cheap. Anyway, he is out on display now where he belongs. The tag says 2001 Don Post Studios Inc a subsidiary of The Paper Magic Group.

That's odd because the mask wasn't catalogued until four years later. It must've sold well,
having remained in DP's line to the very end. Let us know what else turns up, scarey1scd.

I believe that mask was called Smudge. Weird name for a wolf mask but who knows.

So it's a werewolf? With those ears, I thought it was some kind of bat.
Smudge was actually a foam mask introduced in 2005, so the foam inside makes sense. Here is the catalog page where it is advertised as "New" and that is is a foam mask:
I have no idea where the name "Smudge" came from, but here is a pic of the mask with the Spirit Halloween hang tag, calling it "Smudge Wolf", so indeed it is a wolf, although a rather odd looking one.
As far as the 2001 on the tag, they were most likely just using up a run of tags printed years earlier. Pretty common to have an inside tag with a earlier year than the mask was introduced.
Cheers!
I always thought Despot was the coolest of the DP foam masks

Thanks for the in-depth review, jupiter2.
It is beyond exciting to have any production mask cast from the movie original.
ToTS deserves high praise for going that extra mile to please
Halloween's legion
of fans. As to the movies, the only ones I ever watched were the first one
from 1978 and
Season of the Witch. Has it ever been explained why
Michael Myers is so indestructible?
Another fine review, jupiter! I have one of these as well, but my neck is at least 1/4" shorter than yours. The scars line up otherwise, but whomever trimmed my copy before shipping went overboard. I thought the movie was just sort of OK (not scary was my main quibble), but its follow-up was just dreadful! Assuming the new one goes right to Peacock, I'm unlikely to ever see it. I have no desire to spend any additional money on this franchise.
I really wished they had left Myters for dead after the second film. None of its sequels are very good (but I do love me some Halloween III).

Well...I like the early suggestion that he is pure evil and evil cannot be destroyed. However, there is a controversial (i.e. corny) bit of lore introduced in "Halloween - The Curse of Michel Myers", the sixth installment chronologically. That is that Michael is part of "The Cult Of Thorn", an ancient druid cult. Yes, really. ;D
From Screenrant:
"The Cult of Thorn have been around for thousands of years and, in order to preserve their society and keep their tribes alive, they place the Curse of Thorn on an unsuspecting child who is then compelled to kill their whole family on Halloween night."

Thank you! And yes, I agree the movies can be hit or miss, that's for sure.
A viewer on Youtube just pointed out an error in one of the Halloween timelines that I described in the above video. I somehow skipped Halloween II in the second timeline, between the 1978 original and H2O. I didn't even notice that during editing. :-[
I added some text to the video to note the oversight.
I may be the only one that cares, but it is a bit embarrassing. Those Halloween movie experts know every detail. :)

I'm a stickler for accuracy myself so the revision is appreciated.
I acquired some pics of Michael Myers this week. Can you
tell me which of the movies this mask style was used in?

Haha, they sure came up with some bizarre concepts towards the end. I was trying to
figure out where the vision slits are on "ShowStopper" until you pointed them out at
around twelve minutes in. 'Fun review and how excellent that you got DPS alumni to

Fun, informative video, jupiter! Glad you decided to make new videos. Not a fan of the clown paint, but that's a terrific sculpt. Did prefer the original paint scheme, but the hat throws it off. On the thumbnail for the video, I thought it was a unicorn horn.
As you noted, the book by Lee Lambert is a must-have. Great photos throughout.
Thanks Doh!

This would certainly meet member Barlow's standard of scary: blank soulless eyes, pointy ears
and teeth, distressed musculature ... it's independent studios like TVCS who'll give the majors
a run for their money. Thanks for the review and congratulations on scoring "The Traveler",
jupiter2. I hope its itinerary doesn't include my next nightmare!
'Got a scary new score to report this season:
a DPS Mongo mask, foam-filled and in decent shape.
Out of production since the 1970s, I later learned
it was formerly held by Dr Shocker's House of Horrors.
'No wonder it looked somewhat familiar >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q70/922/y6fMdz.jpg)
Weeks earlier, a DPS Wizard also joined my collection.
Sculpted around the same time as Mongo, it didn't
transform into the Wizard until years later (due to
black magic, no doubt). I've always loved the way
Post Studios interpreted these characters.

I'd been a fan of Ayres Studios since the late 1970s. In-between movie FX jobs,
he makes custom masks for collectors. His scariest character has to be DORIAN,
a copy of which I ordered back in May 1980. More expensive than other masks
of its time, he granted me 20% off as a repeat customer >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q70/923/yAKrUK.jpg)
Surely the most gruesome interpretation of Oscar Wilde's decadent dandy,
it reminds me more of that mutant monster from 1979's "Prophecy".
Here's my DORIAN mask around the time I scored it >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q70/924/LOje2M.jpg)
No catalog or ad images of it exist in my archive and I only ever took a couple
of photographs while it was mine, not very good ones at that >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q70/924/EI7Kuz.jpg)
The only other place I'd ever seen a copy was at the Ackermansion. It appears
sometimes in group shots of Uncle Forry's artifacts >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q70/224/fjakingofmonsterskd1.png)
New York's Frankenshrine acquired my copy in February 1985 and that was the last I saw of it, until ...
surprise surprise ... DORIAN returned last month to haunt me!
At some point in time, that bulging eye was added >
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q70/922/1VJcSF.jpg)
Its new owner, the Crimson Ghost Mask Room, had sent it my way for preservation treatment.
I took advantage of its visit to snap some decent portraits for us >

Nice! So, you ended up with that Mongo! I was tempted to buy it, but I'd just gotten one, after 10+ years of waiting, a few months ago. The mask gods are fickle: nothing for years then 3 Mongos come up for sale within months of each other.
