Love me some punk but no so much on the goth stuff, to slow and boring for my taste; Though some consider Samhain to be goth so I guess there are some that I like.  Documentary channel just had a really good flick on called, You Weren't There: A History of Chicago Punk, 1977-1984 if you haven't seen it it is worth checking out!  Some really great bands and some interesting viewpoints on the punk scene in general!

Both good choices Mike.
I got the Damaged LP shortly after it came out and used to CRANK Rise Above since I was pretty newly married and working in a crap ass factory job making less than a buck above minimum wage. I finally did rise above and have a small house in the quiet burbs 2 paid off vehicles and am a warehouse supervisor for a power tool D.C but am still under paid $5 G's a year for what I do due to the economy.
It's kinda weird that I ended up this way and kinda threw most of my H.C punk beliefs to the curb years ago. I'm not gonna live in a van or crap ass apt. making low $ just for THE CAUSE. Tho I still feel like a bit of a hypocrite considering all the stuff I was spewing 25+ years ago whilst tending my gardens , mowing my lawn,driving my 30 K truck and drinking $10 a six craft beer every day. Guess people move on when they know THE CAUSE is a losing battle. Ah youth , we were young , had ideas , were ambitious and unfortunately naive. At least we tried which is more that I can say for most youth today that are total sheep BAAHH! attached to their phones Ipods tablets and gaming systems. I bet many of them never heard of Rwanda ,El Salvador death squads etc , etc.

W.L. I bought the damaged and Iron Maiden's KILLERS LP around "82/83". Those two records DAMAGED
me for life. Lol. I'm 44yrs young now, I live in a beautiful home, and am married to a GOTH Wife( whom
btw is beautiful as well). But, all in all, I am still punk, and wear Punk, Metal and Horror t-shirts everyday.
You can take the Punk rocker out of the city.....but once a pUnk always a pUnk. It doesn't matter what
WE drive or live or whatever. The great thing is, I am surrounded by friends who listen to all forms of
Punk, Thrash, Ska, Goth, Dark wave...etc.

Yes, yes mars, I listen to some old school and some new punk. It all started in the summer of 1977, when I was 15- my friend and I were sitting in the living room while her dad was watching 60 Minutes (barf) and they were talking about how horrible and insulting this new band -The Sex Pistols- were and they played a clip of G_d Save the Queen!!  That was all she wrote! We walked around singing those 2 lines from the song, until our record store got the record!
And the rest is our family history.....I raised my 2 offspring on Black Flag, Social Distortion, Misfits,etc. And I never had a minute of trouble from either child! Neither drank, smoked, or drugged, in fact- my son wore Xs on his hand for 3 years of high school, and had a straightedge band of his own. So, I guess I owe a lot to punk rock. 
Now that I'm ooooolder, I usually listen to Social D., Operation Ivy, Rancid, US Bombs, Misfits, etc.   I'm too old for the New Wave era, but I love Horrorcore.

In the '70's and 80's I saw tons of punk bands. Here's a few I saw live; the Dead Kennedys, Flipper, X, Black Flag, the Proletariat, the Minuteman, the Fall,
the Cramps, SS Decontrol, the Gun Club, Husker Du, the Clash, Jerrys Kids, the Circle Jerks, the Angry Samoans, to name a few off the top of my head. I saw many more but it'll take me a while to remember all of them.

You're kidding. The Ramones were the godfathers of punk. Without them, there's no Sex Pistols, no Clash...who knows how many bands they inspired. That early UK tour is what got the brits going.

The Ramones, the Stooges, MC5, New York Dolls -the very beginnings of punk, both music and attitude.

There so many variations of punk just like with metal and other forms of music it's hard to keep track of them all.

This wasn't a thread titled, "Who is the best punk band?", it was a thread for lovers of punk rock!  Well I'm pretty sure a large majority of punk rock fans like The Ramones no matter what some want to sub-label them as.  I love how everybody tries to redefine punk for their own taste.  The originators of Punk magazine certainly thought The Ramones were "punk" enough with Joey being featured on the third issue but they also include Patti Smith, Lou Reed, New York Dolls, MC5 and a host of others that aren't the average definition of punk today.  Punk wasn't really about any particular sound (or way of dressing) it was about artists that were pushing boundaries be it with speed (the tempo not the drug), lyrics or antics on stage.  You can lambast the Ramones all you want for being "pop" but to somehow look down on someone else for posting them in a punk thread is nonsense.

Personally I don't consider Green Day punk but there are plenty of folks out there, both young and old, that would say otherwise and if a video was posted here of them I wouldn't call someone a poser for doing so....now I may educate them with a few videos from classic punk rockers but that's about it.

Huh?!?  Ramones and Sex Pistols are both punk no matter the sub-label you want to tag them with!  Metallica is heavy metal, Slayer is death metal.  Which sure are both metal but they're metal in the way that thrash and punk are related.  Now I have heard people label bands like Motley Crue or Def Leppard as metal and either one of those two would make a better choice for the "pop" argument.  A lot of early punk to me is just a variation of what was already out their and as I previously stated was only defined as punk due to the content of their lyrics and their attitudes, they weren't worried about being p.c. just to sell some albums.  Velvet Underground, Patti Smith, Death, MC5, Richard Hell and the Voidoids, New York Dolls, even Iggy and the Stooges sound a lot like; The Rolling Stones, The Animals, Hendrix, and other bands from the 60's.  The Ramones though, they were really the first band to do "punk", they were punk rock, there was nothing like them before and therefore no true sound to punk rock before them.  Now if punk got heavier or someone made it more "sinister?" it was only because they built on their style.  Would the "sound" of "punk" have ever happened without The Ramones?  Would bands like The Misfits, Black Flag, Sex Pistols, Clash (who to me is a way better example of an early "pop" take on punk), oh hell let's just say any "punk" band since the Ramones have evolved without The Ramones since they were all building off what they created!?!

Not only were the Ramones perhaps the very first band that could properly be called punk, they were key to defining the punk genre. I dunno about that MC5 were pretty political,  the band Death had a song called Politicians In My Eyes and I'm sure there are other examples.  Punk and politics were always bedfellows in some way.

Thought about this while grocery shopping; Even The Ramones had their political statements with Havana Affair and Bonzo Goes to Bitburg, at least I've always interpreted these as being political statements!

First let me say that I did NOT diss the Ramones. All I said was I consider them punk pop or punk light as it were comparatively.
I also was NOT dissing Hep for his choice. I guess I really don't joke or banter with you guys much ,which in fact is what I was doing. I have a bit of a sarcastic sense of humor so when you re-read my earlier post there will be a smiley face so no one else goes on a rant.

BTW , I never got into the "fun" punk or funny punk aside from skate or surf punk. Was heavily into bands that had social/political commentary.

Yea we could go on all day on what bands are punk and what type but this ain't the thread for it.
And by the way Slayer is a thrash band not death metal. 8)

I was an instant fan!  Their first couple of albums are straight up punk inspired but later offerings get into ska, raggae (which Tim Armstrong & Matt Freeman did previously in Operation Ivy), rockabilly and pretty much the kitchen sink if they thought they could use it.

Lars Frederiksen (guitar and shared vocal duties for Rancid) went on to form a side band, Lars Frederiksen and the Bastards which also has some pretty cool tunes!

Evidently it was their debut performance I saw at Club David's off BayStreet. They played two six song sets. Since they only knew six songs, they played them twice each!

Steve Leckie of the Viletones was in the audience of a dozen or more that night. "Hey, B-Girls are ace!" he said upon hearing them play several songs. "So are you, Steve" one replied.

Incidentally, the headline act for which the B-Girls were opening that night was the Boyfriends from Detroit. They came on with Caesar cut hair styles and wearing suits with narrow ties, straight legged pants and grease boots. They looked absolutely fantastic and sounded great. They were technically solid and the tightest punk band I've ever heard. But I can't find a single, solitary picture, video clip or recording of this band. I keep wondering what happened to the Boyfriends because like I say, they were very good indeed.

The B-Girls though almost immediately transplanted themselves to New York and became a fixture at CBGB's. They quickly formed relationships with other punk bands and sang backup for Blondie at live appearances and on the hit single "The Tide Is High". The bass player Cynthia Ross (blue sweater in the video) formed a particularly close relationship with Stiv Bators of the Dead Boys, so much so that the two were engaged for a time.

The Damned are great! Siouxsie and the Banshees I like a lot. I saw Siouxsie and Budgie as the Creatures years ago. I have all the Birthday Party's stuff on cd, like them a lot, too and the B-girls are really fun.

Here's a band that don't really fit into any category, except maybe "outsider" music, music made by people with no musical training. Three sisters from New Hampshire (hear the accent) encouraged to play music by their parents who foresaw their stardom. Their inept playing, lyrical honesty and raw intuitiveness gained them some famous fans like Frank Zappa and Kurt Cobain. Here's their "philosophy of the world" from 1969...

I remember having what I think was the first Dead Boys album. I was checking it out thinking the P's were out. When "Caught with the Meat in Yer Mouth" cranked in my mom came storming in the living room and had a tirade.

The Shaggs... ??? OMG they suck. to quote Homer Simpson. "They are about the suckiest sucking band that ever sucked that bad" Or something like that.

This definitely leans more towards that old dirty speed/black metal sound i.e. Venom, Bathory....but there is an undeniable punk vibe going on, that dirty sloppy Discharge stuff that I love.

The two biggest punk bands in Toronto in early 1977 were the Viletones and the Poles.

One of the venues in which I saw the Viletones was the Turning Point which was upstairs on Bloor Street. The place was packed that evening and it was claustrophobic and hot despite the fact that fall had turned to winter. Guitarist Freddy Pompeii kept the impatient crowd waiting by tuning up of all things! I mean what's with that? Vocalist Steve Leckie a.k.a. Nazi Dog eventually commented "a$*h*l**'s always tuning up!" at which point somebody yelled "What's the point?"

I may have been wearing my suit and tie, like why bother to change your work clothing for a Viletones concert for Christ's sake? I waited for a break in their set and in the spirit of the occasion shouted "You suck! Get off the bloody stage!" To this Steve responded "Oh man, oh man, you know you just feed my ego with your insults!"

I saw the Poles at Larry's Hideaway on Carlton Street in 1977. Now they could play and lead singer Michaele Jordana was one hot piece of ass if I do say so myself.

Here's a review I wrote of a Bif Naked concert two years ago:

Bif Naked was heading up a bill at the Mod Club on College Street in Toronto on June 13th. We decided that attending the show was the best of the available options that night (and certainly a welcome alternative to staring fixatedly at a computer screen) so off we went. The location required only that we board the Gerrard-College streetcar fifty metres from my front door and take in the scenery for thirty minutes until we stepped off in front of the Mod Club just before 7:00 PM. (The streetcar is my preferred mode of transport around town. I'm of the opinion that a gentleman reserves his car for street racing and aimless cruising purposes only. A beast of burden it's not.) Bif Naked's tour bus was already parked out front.

We were greeted by a small lineup at the door which gave me the opportunity to study the demographics of the crowd. It was diverse. Everything from twenty year old punks to semi respectable retirees still hungry for some good rock. Once inside, we secured a decent vantage point by the rail off to one side of the stage. Unfortunately there's no seats at the Mod Club.

The Manvils, a band from Vancouver, opened for her and were quite good. I actually liked them better than Nine Inch Nails or Jane's Addiction! I'd describe their music as 21st century garage. Since we were only ten feet or so from the stage, I was able to offer them some helpful advice and the lead singer was only momentarily taken aback by my suggestion for them to get haircuts and a bath.

Bif Naked was on by 8:30 PM. She's wearing her hair in a pixie cut now but that's the only indication that she's been battling breast cancer. She was as loud and energetic as ever and put on a show that met the demanding quality standards of the assembled multitude.

In fact, it even exceeded that of one fellow who had brought his nine year old daughter along to the show when Bif Naked proceeded to perform the tender ditty "f&*% You Too!" for which she invited and received enthusiastic audience participation. The fellow hugged his daughter and left shortly thereafter. Excuse me! I mean you did bring your daughter to see a woman who's covered in tattoos. What did you expect?

She ended the show with a fine rendition of Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters". We were out looking for further entertainments by 9:30 PM. Very civilized if I do say so myself.

Old post, but I couldn't agree more. Pixies, Killing (plus Joy Division, Bauhaus, Einsturzende Neubauten, etc.). This is my personal favorite subgenre of punk/ experimental music.
   That said, Nick Cave is my absolute, all-time favorite music maker (bar none). His first record (Boys Next Door - Door, Door) celebrates it's 40th anniversary this year. Whether it's Birthday Party, Bad Seeds, Grinderman or his dozen or more movie soundtracks...he always delivers. Excluding his numerous instrumental soundtracks, I have all his albums on vinyl. Every single one is unique and different. His latest album, 'Skeleton Tree" is the only album to literally bring me to tears. It's a monument to loss and grief that was released a few months after my father died. I didn't get it upon release, but then it hit me like a ton of bricks. Incredible career that keeps on giving.

 Btw, Hep, I hadn't read the earlier posts on this thread...you do have punk cred. I think we just disagree on the best Pistols songs. My profound apologies. I really am an a-hole (not that there was really ever any doubt). Sorry, man.

That was never in doubt. I'm older than you, so mine started in my junior year in high school. That year (1973), I almost lived at the Whisky a Go Go. The Stooges, N.Y. Dolls, Suzi Quatro, etc. I saw Bowie in '72, and that made everything else seem boring. He mentioned how his fave band was The Velvet Underground. I went to my favorite music store and bought their first album and "Loaded". That was it.They became MY favorite band. Everything changed that year. Then came 1977....

Mord. You are very lucky to experience that era of music. I assume it was magical. I grew in the 70s and 80s, which also produced so many fantastic music and bands. However....I was too young to experience the Golden era of the 70s. Alice Cooper, KISS , Bowie, Slade, The Sweet, TRex, Elton, Queen....etc.

My parents were party/stoner teenagers when I was born (mid 70s), so I was around a lot of partying and saw things I probably should not have seen at a young age  :o. I bring this up because my dad was a rocker. Heavier bands were his favorite, so Sabbath, Purple, Zeppelin stuff like that. He did like some early punk. We're from Detroit so he loved MC5 and the Stooges. He also had Ramones and NY Dolls records, but that's as far as he took it. He moved to SoCal when I was very young and eventually I was sent out there too. So roughly middle school yrs I got into skateboarding in Cali and that scene was my first real exposure to punk. The other kids listened to Misfits, Minor Threat, Suicidal T, Bad Brains, GBH etc. I fell in love with that music right away. It was heavy and aggressive so it made total sense to me. Metal was getting pretty cheesy by that time, so punk and hardcore were like breaths of fresh air.

I moved back to michigan for my high school years and there weren't many punks at my school. So by then I was back into metal and listening to a lot of popular hip hop music. Nevertheless, I worked at an independent record store during my college years and that's when I got back into hardcore music big time. I was still listening to a lot of rap, but in terms of heavy music I turned into a hardcore snob. I still listened to my core favs like Kiss and Sabbath, but pretty much that was only metal I listened to during those years. So I was really into a lot of indie hardcore like Strife, Morning Again, Will Haven, and the Hope Conspiracy. By the time I was in grad school I didn't care about scenes anymore. I pretty much went back to my roots and got back into Deep Purple, Iron Maiden, King Diamond, Judas Priest, Slayer etc.

Now I listen to whatever and whenever. I'll put on Johnny Cash, then Bad Brains, then NWA, then Kiss, then some chill electronic music, then Suicide Silence, then Buddy Holly, then the Stones and on and on. Being mature can actually be liberating (at least in some ways, lol).

Yeah, magic it was. I forgot to mention the Roxy Theater. I saw Patti Smith, The Ramones, Graham Parker & the Rumor, Peter Gabriel (1st tour) and many others there. I went to see Alice Cooper (when that was the band name) at the Forum. It was the "Billion $ Babies Tour" (guillotine and all). Man, I really miss those "Golden Years",as Bowie would call them. Oh, I saw P.I.L. at the Olympic auditorium (that was the closest I got to seeing The Pistols).

Geezer, I loved reading this! I recently watched a documentary on Detroit's Grande Ballroom on PBS. The Stooges, MC5, Alice Cooper....the list goes on. Did your dad ever go to any of those cool shows?

Oh, yeah. My taste in music is all over the place, but the meat and potatoes of what I listen to is mostly punk, psychobilly, dark wave and darker synth based stuff.

I think my dad was just a bit too young to make those legendary Grande Ballroom shows. But he did catch a lot of concerts at the Michigan Palace back in the day. He saw Bowie there a couple of times. Kiss, Blue Oyster Cult, Nugent. I think he saw the Kinks there.

Mars will like this story: my parents saw Kiss at the Hartland Skating Rink back in 75 (maybe 74). I think it was like 1,500 capacity venue.

I have uncles and older cousins who remember the Grande Ballroom though. One uncle was a roadie at some of the shows. I think he said he worked Grand Funk Railroad show in like 69. A certain band called "Led Zeppelin" opened up! I hear from people that the vibe was real egalitarian. In other words, they would have house parties after the show and didn't matter if you were in the audience or a roadie or whatever, you'd go to the party and guys like Iggy, Alice, and Wayne Kramer would just be there kicking it. So awesome.

I have uncles and older cousins who remember the Grande Ballroom though. One uncle was a roadie at some of the shows. I think he said he worked Grand Funk Railroad show in like 69. A certain band called "Led Zeppelin" opened up! I hear from people that the vibe was real egalitarian. In other words, they would have house parties after the show and didn't matter if you were in the audience or a roadie or whatever, you'd go to the party and guys like Iggy, Alice, and Wayne Kramer would just be there kicking it. So awesome.

   Great stories! I saw Grand Funk in 1970 (or 71). I thought they sucked, but a certain band named Black Sabbath opened. They saved the night for me. Btw, I skipped my senior prom, so my girlfriend and I could see the Kinks the same night. They were fantastic.

Definitely. I still wish I experienced the Heyday of early Hard Rock and Metal. Bowie, Alice, KISS, Zeppelin.....all amazing, all legendary in their own right. Great anecdotes.

I've always liked that cover. It's not a band parents had to worry about. My mom tried to do the same thing to my brother's records. Even though she didn't threaten mine, I felt it was my duty to protect them. I put myself in front of the albums, and got hell from my dad later. The music was saved. I guess it's a paranoid parent thing.

Sadly I never took in any of the Alice Cooper shows at Wonderland. I did, however, take in a performance by Alice Cooper shortly after they hit it big with I'm Eighteen. It was an outdoor concert at the University of Western Ontario during Frosh/Orientation week in September 1971. There were no reserved seats. Students/fans just sat on the grass wherever. Just before the start of the concert a representative from the Student Council took the stage to encourage students to support some charity. While most everybody in the generally laid back crowd either listened politely or just ignored the fellow, the student rep was after a few sentences interrupted by a strident shout "Get off the stage, as**ole!"

"That sounds like something one of my buddies would yell" I thought immediately. (We took pride in our callousness and offending polite society. Despite our long hair, we sneered at the whole hippie ethos.) Well I was right! My buddy Anthony had snuck in by crawling under the fence.

Alice Cooper performed that evening all dressed in green spandex outfits very much like scuba diving suits. And a nurse in uniform did come out to take straight-jacketed singer Alice away after the Ballad of Dwight Fry:

I also clearly remember singer Alice substituting the lyrics "Drinking Labatt's 50 Ale" into one of the songs and then spitting a mouthful into the crowd:

I've seen a few shows across the River. Saw Kiss in Windsor and Heaven and Hell (Black Sabbath) in London for example.

It's interesting you mention Canadian beer. That's a big deal for Detroiters. My dad used to drink Cinci and was disappointed when we moved to San Diego in early 80s and couldn't find Canadian beer there (or Faygo soda pop for that matter).  I moved back to Michigan for my high school and college years, so Labatt Blue is pretty much all i consumed for several years. After college graduation I took a job in Seattle area. It was like deja vu. Now I was the one bummed out I couldn't find Canadian beer (or Faygo). I think now you can find anything anywhere though. We lived in Arizona recently but I don't drink anymore so I never thought to check stores. I know you can get in Faygo in San Diego and LA now.

I'm back in Detroit (this time for good i think) so I can consume all the Faygo, Vernors, and Better Made chips I desire.  :D

London had its own small Vernors bottling plant and I still quaff Vernors on a semi-regular basis. Faygo is often "dumped" into Ontario and I still buy it when I find it selling at discount prices in convenience stores.

Great stories Hep. You're talking about the west side of Detroit. I don't advise hanging out on that side of town these days (or the east side for that matter)  :o

Downtown totally different these days. Downtown, Mid-Town, and Cork Town very hip now. A lot of development going on. Some hip restaurants and bars---even some retail now. Real estate pricey in those areas. But the residential neighborhoods on the east and west sides of Detroit are pretty dangerous.

My uncle and aunt lived in Highland Park but moved from Highland Park to the Seven Mile Road-Southfield area because of the rapid ongoing decline in Highland Park. As a kid at the time I associated the United States with a culture of modernism and the Seven Mile Road-Southfield neighbourhood looked to me like the kind of spiffy modern neighbourhood I associated with the United States. This continued through the sixties but then the neighbourhood started to decline and by the late 1980's it was pretty sad indeed. But my uncle and aunt passed away well before the turn of the century and I've had no reason to revisit the neighbourhood for over twenty years.

That's as good as it gets. "Give 'Em Enough Rope" is the hardest hitting Clash album, imo. Sandy Pearlman (Blue Oyster Cult) produced this this with a much appreciated metallic edge. Fantastic album (even sharper on vinyl).

It's funny. I'll still mention to people that I'm going downtown for a concert and get funny looks like I'm crazy. I try to tell them downtown is getting built up but the stigma of old downtown is still there.

He thought the Frost would be huge. That though was not the way it turned out and Frost records are now very tough to find in used record stores.

I took in a show by ostensibly the Crazy World of Arthur Brown at the Wonderland "Swim and Dance" Pavilion in 1972(?). It was actually more than a bit of a rip-off since it was only Arthur Brown backed up by a group of local musicians who simply jammed the whole time while Arthur Brown performed his theatrics on the stage in front of them. They played Fire but it sounded like the band had rehearsed the track for the first time only that afternoon. It was also standing-room only and it was hot and claustrophobic.

Like I say, Fred and Mike were very sophisticated. They had treasures like the Shirriff Hockey Coin Shields and Shirriff Baseball Coins in 1962 long before I did. And they had Aurora monster model kits, Revell "Big Daddy" Roth model kits, a Hawk Freddie the Foul model kit and a Monogram Li'l Coffin model kit when I was still just coveting such treasures on the shelves at Tuckey Hardware and the downtown Kresge store.

For those that may be interested, I just came across a podcast called Six Foot Plus. I've only listened to a couple of episodes so far, but I'm digging it. It's like if a horror host had a radio show instead of a TV show. The guy plays music from bands of the surf, horror punk and psychobilly variety.

So just based on the title of this thread, I HAVE to put this in here. I am a HUGE fan of Goth/death rock and have been for over 35 years. Sisters of Mercy being a fave. This band is very similar to the very early Merciful Release EP's of the late 70's to early 80's. I;m sure you will start getting irritated by my intros. Dark,Depressing,please do not play with razor blades while listening.   Screams for TinA. One of the most mournful depressing Goth songs I have ever heard. THAT is why I LOVE it so much.. So I ended up bowing to the wishes of the majority and Red and I took in Iggy & the Stooges at Massey Hall. It turned out to be a full house - except for inexplicably a patch in the upper corner.

A loud and lively group of local punksters calling themselves *ucked Up opened for the Stooges. They appeared to have a pretty good following in attendance and put on an excellent show.

Iggy & the Stooges delivered every bit as much as I expected. They were loud, crude and frantic. Iggy was shirtless and performed with even more energy than Mick Jagger. He leaped from the stage into the audience at one point and was eventually coaxed/dragged back on stage by security personnel. Rumour has it that Avril Lavigne employs dancers at her shows. The Stooges, however, never have any need to pay dancers. Iggy just invited the audience up onto the stage midway through the show. Being a dignified gentleman, I stayed in my seat. The tunes that they did were barely, if at all, recognizable but that too I expected. A good time was had by all - except for the middle aged fellow a few rows behind us who was led out by security for I think filming the show.

We met up with a couple of fourteen year old girls who were returning from the Avril Lavigne concert on the GO train after the show. One of them opined that Avril was hot and she'd do her. She then seemed a bit embarrassed.

Nonetheless, an evening well worth the time, effort and money expended.

That is their best LP. R.I.P. Rozz Williams. I went to the Museum of Death a few times and took photos of the door Rozz used in his suicide. After taking the photos, I felt a strange presences in the room. The Museum of Death is an odd experience. One must be prepared entering the Museum. For the Museum of Death is a more-than-shocking experience. People fascinated with Death as a subculture, will definitely find the Museum interesting.
