Title: Blue Oyster Cult: Fans out there?
Post by: Memphremagog on September 13, 2019, 12:34:16 PM
A vastly underrated band and one with some sublime lyrics and music, somewhere in between the Doors and Black Sabbath but with a mythos all their own..

So many great tunes from their 50 year(!) career, I have so many tunes that I can listen to over and I over. How about you? Are you fan? A casual listener? Let's hear what songs or albums from them make your favorites list..

A few of mine:

B.O.C., is truly an underrated band. Great songs and talented. Buck Dharma and Eric Bloom, I think are the only original members.

I would not say I am a fan(atic). Only, being a musician I am aware of their discography and deep cuts. That said, I pride myself knowing their awesome contributions to Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. B.O.C. definitely influenced many bands and musicians. Unfortunately. B.O.C. never were the DARLINGS of Hard Rock/Heavy Metal as their contemporaries. E.g., Black Sabbath, KISS, Aerosmith, Judas Priest, RUSH and Led Zeppelin. Blue Oyster Cult fell in to the category of the lesser or less popular bands. Such as, April Wine, UFO, Foghat, Cheap Trick( debated popularity). As those aforementioned bands never achieved the status and acclaim as Zeppelin or RUSH.

However! B.O.C. is a band that achieved underground status and popularity. Which is a good thing.

Hell yeah! I first saw BOC opening for Mott the Hoople ('73). They were absolutely incredible.  Buck Dharma was on fire! My favorite BOC album has always been "Tyranny and Mutation". I even wore a jacket with the BOC emblem that my high school girlfriend made for me. Other kids thought I was a Satanist or something. Great band.

Big fan of their stuff! Saw them live a few years back and they were awesome. My kids wanted to see them too, but they were underage at the time and it was an over 21 show... oh well

This is one time we disagree. I never considered a band's popularity when evaluating their quality, influence, or impact. On the contrary, most of the boundary-expanding bands were sales failures. For example, I would rather listen to Velvet Underground than the Beatles. I'm more impressed by BOC's first 4 albums than any of the other bands mentioned (with the exception of Sabbath & Zep). I appreciated their straight forward, no flashy theatrics approach. That's just my view. Millions more would agree with you, I'm sure.

Great thread. Big BOC fan. The (un)holy trinity for me growing up was Black Sabbath, Kiss, and Alice Cooper. Blue Oyster Cult would have made it big four. They had that same vibe---heavy rock music mixed with supernatural and sci-fi themes.

I saw them with Sabbath on the iconic "Black and Blue" tour in Detroit I was like 4 yrs old so I only have fragments of memories from that show to be honest. When we moved to San Diego a few yrs later my dad took me to see BOC with Pat Travers opening up. Coming full circle, I saw BOC with Deep Purple in Detroit like 5 yrs ago. Buck and Bloom are the only original members these days but still fun show.

You have to love a band who write about everything from Nosferatu, UFO's, Men In Black to Godzilla and Baron Frankenstein and fuse it with hard rock and still come up with ballads and even a few pop songs here and there.
