Let's get a Star Trek discussion going! Please bring any area of interest you have to the table! Books, movies, TV series, toys, models, collectibles or whatever! This is inspired by our fellow member Therin of Andor....who boldly goes blue! Let me begin......I never grow tired of the original series. I cannot decide which character I like best, Spock or Kirk. They were both great! I have only a handful of Star Trek collectible toys, and they are, for the most part, from the original years 1966-69. That helps keep my collecting down, as the rush to merchandise Star Trek seems to have come later. There is a small antique mall not far from me that has row after row of Trek paperback novels. If anyone has a suggestion of a truly extraordinary volume in the series I would be thankful. Haven't read one yet, and overwhelmed by how many there are!

I have never been a big TNG fan, but I'm familiar with the cast of characters and I will watch it if it's on. But the original series brings me back to a time and place that I treasure! Oh Yeah!! A time of drinking chocolate milk (not that lowfat swill) and watching the best show on tv with full attention and a sense of fascination I will never forget. I only have a few modern collectibles, but last year I made a home made Tribble for my grandson. It was pretty easy :) I love the whole Christopher Pike saga episodes. I will always remember how shocking it was the first time I saw his face and the horror of his story. It was such a big traumatic deal back when I was 7 or 8 years old. I never thought I would see anything that horrible on tv ever again. The aliens on Star Trek are still the best on television! So much variety and personality were brought to our old black and white tv set!

Definitely glad they did not go with Ellison's original story, where Kirk
was willing to sacrifice the future to save Edith Keeler. It is more fitting with the captain we know that he would make the hard choice to lose his love to save the universe.

In ST:TOS, I liked the episode "The Devil in the Dark" with the Horta. It redefined what intelligent life could be. I'll have to throw some pics up when I get a chance of my ceiling with the string of Hallmark starships.

Oh lord- monsterphile- I have to see your starships!! Did you get the Christopher Pike ornament from Hallmark that beeps? I was so disturbed when someone gave it to me, because it brought back those feelings of the horror of that storyline. But later on I started appreciating the details and realized that it was a pretty awesome little collectible! Dark Shadows was probably the only other show I was so emotionally involved in besides Star Trek. Thankfully I married another original Star Trek fan, so he understands my feelings about it and doesn't make fun. We always watch episodes on the computer or iphone when we are on a plane together. We used to carry those red, blue and yellow cases the dvds are in, but now we just download them which is so much more convenient than lugging those cases around. The storylines are just fantastic - I could watch them all over and over and notice something new every time.
My favorite episode was "Mirror, Mirror" with the parallel universe. I loved seeing how different the crew were from the crew I knew, especially seeing Spock with a beard. It always reminded me of the Lost In Space episode "The Anti-matter Man". This ST episode opened my little mind to concepts that hooked me on Sci- Fi forever.

"Mirror, Mirror" is also a favorite, also "Day of the Dove", a great Klingon episode.
I had most of the models, posters & books as a kid. I did salvage a few paperbacks (including the first one), & I have two Johnny Lightning "Legends of Star Trek" ships w/my small collection of monster toys.
Despite my love for the original show I started to get into Next Generation too. I'm bad at episode titles, but one that I felt was excellent had the Enterprise investigate a peaceful planet that had been savagely attacked by a hostile alien race. Enterprise detected only 2 life forms left, both older residents. Though harmless looking the one survivor was an extremely powerful being. Once revealed, he pronounces to Picard that he had been pushed by grief to kill all the invaders with a thought. Picard acknowledged that he had done only what he must.......the sole resident then confesses that he didn't just wipe-out the invading force, but that entire aggressive species everywhere. Enterprise leaves with Picard stating that the Federation would be best by just leaving that fella alone......so cool!.....Buddy
When they filmed Halloween, it was off season, and they needed a Halloween mask. The one they chose was a Captain Kirk Mask. Considering that they painted a Captain Kirk mask white, for Michael Myers * to wear, you might say William Shatner is the face of Modern Horror.

I always loved "The Corbomite Maneuver", not just because it was tightly written and acted in a suspensful little story, but the phoney head of Balock scared the c*** out of me the first time I saw it! I remember having to dodge the final credits as they always used a shot of the Balock head for the final slide (a Desilu Production!)
I recently found out the child who played the "real" Balock was played by Clint Howard, brother of Ron Howard. Guess he was always a bald little kid! ;D
In the fall of 1975, I started to become interested in this cool Saturday morning cartoon about people on a space ship called "Star Trek". When my mom saw I was taking a liking to it, she told me that it used to be a live action show.
Wow, you mean the cartoon I was starting to like was based on a "real show" about people in space?
But as luck would have it, just as I started to really like the animated Star Trek, it was ending it's Saturday morning run. I was crushed. But only a few days after that (or so I remembered) the local station started running ads for the "real" Star Trek and they were going to start running it.
I had to trade off watching Star Trek every other day with my sister watching Sesame Street (and even though I loved Sesame Street too I loathed to give up a viewing of Star Trek to it).
Also, I was hard at work to find Star Trek stuff. The first thing I found was a Star Trek comic book (issue #34, The Psychocrystals)

and then, I stumbled on a long boxed Mr. Spock model kit at a drug store. I had to save up for that one but after a week or so, my visiting Grandma made up what I needed and I walked to the drug store to pick it up.

But I really wanted Star Trek dolls (yes, I called them dolls back then) and before I started to pay attention to Star Trek, I thought I might've seen a commercial for something that could've been Star Trek dolls. In fact, this is what I remember seeing:

But back then, my hopes for Star Trek figures didn't get confirmed until we got the 1975 Sears Christmas catalog. I nearly went through the roof when I saw:

And a little bit later I shot into orbit when I actually saw a Dr. McCoy on the rack when we went to a Dept. Store. I couldn't get mom to buy it though (I wonder if it could have anything to do with that it is close to Christmas, I'll keep an eye out for presents that could be big enough to hold that carded bubble pack).
And so, Christmas 1975, I first unwrapped The Enterprise playset. It was in a plain brown box with "U.S.S. Enterprise" stamped in black on it. I thought it was weird that it came in a plain brown box but was glad to have it anyway.
Of the presents left, only one could have been big enough to have the packaged Star Trek figure of the type I saw in the store. I unwrapped it and it was Dr. McCoy, possibly that same McCoy I saw in the store. I loved having the Enterprise and McCoy but I thought he was all I was going to get so I was a tad disappointed (and I wanted Spock, most of all too).
I then went and opened this smaller package. It turned out to be 2 smaller boxes wrapped together. In those smaller boxes was Kirk and Spock in plastic baggies.
I was blown away and happy to get them but boy, I sure got punked by the practices of the catalog houses of the time. Sears and Pennies would often ship toys in plain brown shipper boxes instead of the packaging they would get in retail stores. To the industry, a pretty box was only useful for a retail situation. A catalog situation, the catalog served the purpose of the retail box. Mom had bought Dr. McCoy from the store (probably the same day I begged for him) and ordered Kirk, Spock and The Enterprise from the catalog.
No matter though, I had Kirk, Spock and McCoy with the Enterprise and was as happy as Ralphie with his BB gun (even though the foil on the insignias was detached on at least one figure before the end of Christmas day).
So, the original series (that includes the animated series for me) will always be the gold standard and the Mego Trek figures will always be the ones to beat with all the Trek stuff that has come since. And when I discovered that when I found the Enterprise playset in a store later on with a pretty printed box, it made me covet the packaging that didn't come from the catalog and spurred my love for retro toy packaging today.

Somehow we would always pepper in some Lost in Space with those play times.. Like, beam me up Dr. Smith, or Mr. Spock that does not compute! The 12" GI Joes were always the race of giants....LOL!
When the Star Wars juggernaut hit in 1977, I thought the Star Wars figures would be just like the Star Trek figures... until they came out and they were much smaller.
Still, I just made up that the people in the Star Wars worlds were smaller than the people in Star Trek's world and would play with them together.

I loved the pages from the old Sears catalogue-brought back a lot of memories of pouring over the Christmas catalogue in fine detail. Wish I put that much effort into my homework! ;D

I had the Star Trek Enterprise playset and all of the figures as well as the Planet of the Apes figures and some 'tree house' that I don't recall if it was a Planet of the Apes thing or an Action Jackson thing---------in any event, Zira and Uhura were simply sluts when the day was done.
I LOVED the transporter on the Enterprise. Oh, yes----and the Bat Cave. I don't think the apes could keep THEIR hands off ROBIN. ::)
The tree house was first used for Action Jackson. It was redecorated for Action Jackson's girl counterpart Dinah Mite. It was redecorated again and used for Planet Of The Apes.
You likely had the Ape version as the AJ and Dinah Mite were not as widely produced.
If you think Zira and Uhura were wild, wait until you meet Dinah Mite.

Bigbud - that is also my favorite episode. Its really great watching Picard wrap his mind around the enormity of what the alien did, more than just kill them all, he wiped them from all existence in entirety. No record of them remained. It was as if they had never been. It was one of the few episodes where they surprised and moved me.

Oh I just remember something. When Star Trek first was shown by the local station I watched, the station had commercials for the Star Trek 1976 calender. You could actually send money to the station and they would send it to you.
I bugged mom for it and she was like "nobody pays for calendars!". In her mind, calenders were something you got for free from your church or the mechanic. But she came around and we sent off for the 1976 Star Trek calendar.
But I couldn't convince her to get whatever it cost to get the Star Trek blueprints but I did get the Technical manual.
I think I've seen every episode of the original series as well as the Next Generation. I have a bunch of the Mego Star Trek figures. Went to a handfull of Trek conventions-saw Patrick Stewart, who didn't do too many con's I don't think. He was very entertaining though and spoke to the audience for about two hours and took questions, too. Saw Marina Sirtis and Michael Dorn and Rene Auberjonois. And saw fan favorite James Doohan, he loved the fans and entertained us with impersonations of Scotty speaking with different accents. He was the best.
As I got older, I grew to appreciate what a sleeze James T. Kirk was. He was an ambassador to the universe for Earth------and he was humping every female lifeform out there... even if it compromised the welfare of the female lifeform. And he deployed the age-old diplomacy tactic of 'punching you in the face' if you were a male lifeform.
That's basically all he was doing. Punching or humping. And he carried out his protocol immediately after the gender determination was complete.
Great show----the original series. I had no use for any of the other stuff.

Next to Doctor Who, Star Trek the original series is my all time favorite TV show. I love TNG and Enterprise was pretty good too, but I was kind of bleh on DS9 and Voyager. I just got all 3 seasons of the original series. Season 1 is the remastered version which was ok, but I prefer the original versions, which is what i got for seasons 2 and 3 (they are also alot cheaper than the remastered versions of the seasons). I also got the animated series for my B-day a couple years ago. I used to have tons of the paperback novels but sold them years ago stupidly. I recently picked up a box of 20 books for 13 bucks a few weeks ago though. One of my favorite books was Doctor's Orders where Kirk is going on what is supposed to be a routine away mission and leaves Dr McCoy in charge as a gag because Bones is complaining. Something happens and McCoy is stuck in charge and without the Captsin to countermand the order, he can't reliquish command. William Shatner himself also wrote a series of great novels set after the ST Generations movie with Borg nanites bringing Kirk back to life and chronicalling Kirk's adventures in the TNG era and featuring characters from all of the series. The books really are well written and tie in with many episodes of all the series and tie things together such as V'ger from the first movie having been repaired by the Borg and explaining the Klingon change from the swarthy humanoids of the original series to the versions with the bony plates on their heads from the movie era forward as having used the genetics devised by the humans like Khan to improve their race. My favorite episodes are Arena (the Gorn is my all time favorite alien from ST), Mirror,Mirror, and Balance of Terror. I have several kits and am currently working on the original series Enterprise as well as several figures-I just got a set of 12 1991 4 inch tall hamilton figures of the crew and several aliens.

All the misdirection with the Enterprise crew was cool too.....image of the Aggressor ship......music constantly playing in Diana Troi's head......just a great episode! Buddy
I liked all the series to varying degrees. They all had good and bad episodes, even the original series ("Spock's Brain" anyone?). Overall, I look at them as part of one big story.

this is what I love about 60's/70's Star Trek toys and tie ins. Back then, the studio didn't care very much if the art and execution had any screen accuracy and you get a lot of wacky interpretations of the Enterprise and the crew.

No they never really came out and said why the Kligons changed or exactly where V'ger was repaired. The stuff from the novels is not accepted as cannon by Paramount. Heck I heard that they don't even consider the animated series cannon even though it was written, produced and starred most everybody from the original series! As for thr Klingons, I think that explanation from Shatner's books would not work now anyways as Klingons shown in the Enterprise series looked the same as the movie era Klingons even though that series takes place about 150 years before TOS.
Nothing can possibly be "cannon" anyway since there are nasty logical incongruities in their supposition that history can be changed if and when one travels back through tine to do things. I'm off the opinion that if it happened, it happened, and whatever one manages to do back in time has washed out in the events that actually occurred.

Very entertaining. Highlight of the night: Shatner did a spoken word version of Men at Work's song, "Down Under", which led into a recitation of former Prime Minister Gough Whitlam's speech following his Dismissal by the Governor-General in the 70s, which led into a spoken word portion of our national song, "Waltzing Matilda".

A couple of my collecting regrets are Star Trek related though. I was outbid on a Hasbro Star Trek Marble Maze by a sniper some ten years ago and I've not come across another one since. Very annoying since I like those Hasbro Marble Mazes.
Secondly I had bought a Star Trek Tracer Gun cheap at a toy show twenty or more years ago. There must have been a warehouse find of these since every second dealer at the show seemed to have at least one on display. Since I wasn't either a Trekkie nor was I much interested in collecting toys in general at the time, I gave it away to a down on his luck buddy of mine who was indeed a Trekkie. I figured I wouldn't miss it. Well now that I am more of a toy collector I do miss it!

I'd have to check the boxes to figure out which Enterprise and which Klingon Cruiser came out first myself. I limit my Star Trek collection though to AMT kits before the company became AMT/ERTL.

From my understanding, the long box kits are considered to be earlier issue then the square box.
Your long box Mr. Spock differs from the one I had as a kid and managed to require from Ebay. Mine has the Star Trek title running down the blue bar on the left.

In opposite order-- No, I didn't get the Pike ornament, although I do have a good number of the Trek figure ornaments. As for the Starships, I missed the first year original Enterprise Hallmark ornament (the one that commands a high price these days). At the time, the store only had the display one, and back then the clerk wouldn't sell the display one. The brain itself is just one of those things they sold around Halloween. The display globe is something I got at a yard sale that originally probably had dried flowers or something like that in it. Then, I just substituted the rubber brain for dried flowers. A lot of times you can get domes very cheaply like that, especially if the display item is messed up (broken butteefly wings or flowers). I just want the dome and base for "specimens".

I had forgotten that the song in Troi's head had originated as the sound from a musicbox Data had found facinating while visiting the one home left from the nuclear devastation on the planet. Also, the powerful being revealed at the end was called a Doud. Still a special episode with me. Buddy

I've already told my daughter that when I shuffle off this mortal coil, I want to be cremated and have my ashes placed in this decanter. I promised to haunt her if she didn't do it ;)

Lots of pics of Playmates "Star Trek" action figures and other "Star Trek" collectibles help to illustrate "Star Trek: The Complete Unauthorized History" by Robert Greenberger, a beautiful, new hardcover book that has just arrived in stores.

This is the beautiful A&BC Star Trek card set from 1969. It is a 55 card set, and is the very first full-color Star Trek card set produced. The 55 cards all depict scenes from episode #7 of the original Star Trek series "What Are Little Girls Made Of?". It starred the very large and ominous Ted Cassidy as Ruk and the slightly clad Sherry Jackson as Andrea. There are humorous errors on the back of several cards........on card #1 Kirk is identified as ROGER Kirk......on card 2 Spock is called a mix of earthman and Martian...ha! And throughout the cards, Ruk is called Rock........here are the first 24 of the 55 set........

Why oh why is Aquaman slugging that poor octopus? Aquaman is a friend of all sea dwellers! In fact Aquaman has long had a loyal octopus sidekick named Topo:

And even if that's a rogue "bad" octopus, Aquaman can telepathically exercise mind control over all marine life. Boooo to whoever drew and whoever at DC or Hasbro approved that board game cover.
An Aquaman board game would normally be close to the very top of my board game Most Wanted list, but this Hasbro one showing Aquaman behaving completely out of character sours me.
