Toy Ranch

Yes, the title is over the top.  Check it out and see if it's warranted.

Film history nerds (students and scholars surely among them), it's time to get it excited.  The holdings of The Media History Digital Library are now able to be searched thanks to a project called Lantern.

Eric Hoyt, Carl Hagenmaier, and Wendy Hagenmaier first tried to get search functionality for the materials that were apart of the Media History Digital Library in 2011, and Hoyt later used the institutional support of his employer, the University of Wisconsin--Madison to facilitate the process.  Check out the whole team here.

The results are amazing.  Several decades, mostly from first half of the twentieth century, of Variety, Moving Picture World, Photoplay, the Hollywood Reporter, Picture Play, and more are all available to search and view as images and pdfs on the Lantern site.

Search for your favorite older films, directors, and stars and see what comes up in this incredible new resource, on Lantern now.

Radical. I will definitely check this out when I get the chance.

Actually, Toy Ranch, I think the title is understated. This is fantastic!

Almost too much information!

Here's an example what they are posting that would interest most on UMA:

Monsters For Sale

Amazing resource!

It even saves a list of your past searches.

I hope someday they can add highlighted words within articles.  There are a ton of articles that are really featuring something other than what you are searching for.  If it was possible to highlight only the term you are seeking, your search could go much faster.

I did not have to register and was not asked to pay anything for the use of this library.

Is the entire site FREE?

It's free!

But they are trying to raise funds to add more.

They have a lot of pics on their Flickr account.

So really really cool!

Speaking as a Long time "Grummager"  (A term that a beloved teacher used for pre-internet research) , I can say that this is FABULOUS!!  When you  find an interview with your "subject of interest", that's considered to be a "Holy Grail", and it contains an exquisite portrait that you've never seen...  you just say WTF? and pinch yourself. (VBG)

I found this on Monday afternoon, and  spent almost 4 hours just EXPLORING.
