This thing is all over the place. It's PD and has been beaten to death by several horror hosts as well as showing up on countless PD compilations over the years. It's a Corman cheapy from '61 and the "secret" is that the monster is supposed to be faked in the plot by a criminal to cover his nefarious deeds, but the real monster shows up at the end to give him his comeuppance. Cinematic tripe, but junk some of us thrive on (me included  :D).
