A "reality" based Mortal Kombat?

This is a 7 min test reel made by director Kevin Tancharoen to show the studio in hopes of getting a director gig for a Mortal Kombat reboot.....and talk about a reboot!  Besides the character names this is hardly recognizable as Mortal Kombat~

Although the execution of it is well done and the fight scene was killer...Why not just make your own story with your own characters?  What's the point of taking the names of Mortal Kombat characters making a film with Mortal Kombat in the title but basically not having it be Mortal Kombat!??
