I was talking to my mother about this the other day.  She said that people didn't relocate that much either, and so when you went to a flea market or yard sale or auction, it was all stuff you had seen before.  Everyone in an area had the same stuff, basically.  Of course there were different styles over the years, but from toys to clothes to furniture...  it applied to everything.

Interesting points, Bobby.

Another thing to consider is the imput of the different chains- certain items were carried only by certain chain stores. For instance, there were no Korvette's in The City, but they had them in Indiana, and they carried a completely different line than Kresge's, which seemed to be everywhere. Of course, when Dad wandered in the car on a Sunday, you had to make him stop (or get Mom to get him to stop). A 'new' department store stop was always exciting, even if you were only looking.

Keep in mind, too...a lot of the coolest stuff we remember from the past was not available in the big chain stores- they apparently decided not to carry it, or as I suspect, much of the stuff was not distributed too far outside its manufacturing area (or in the huge numbers of today). Most of The Monster Stuff was manufactured in the Northeast belt of the USA- Penn. to NY- and to this day, most of it is still "found" in that area. Certain items (ex.-Jaymar Monster puzzles and the C-P Soakies) were everywhere- department stores, grocery stores, drug stores, "5&10s", etc., which is why they are still 'common' today. Other items, like Post masks and most of the "FM-type stuff" for example, were only available at very specific locations- thus its rarity today. I talked to a guy once, who was the only person I ever met that actually has an FM Photo Printing Set as a kid. Of course he used it, but the strange thing is, he claimed they got it at a camera store. Makes sense, but how many kids ever even went into a camera store?!

Another thing to enter into the survivability equation is the item's size. Bigger is rarer. It is much more likely that a plastic figure got tossed into a box of stuff-and thus saved-than it is someone preserved a huge boxed playset (without playing with it to death). Chances are, if Mom bought you a $4.95 playset, you played with it. And destroyed it.  :P

By the way, if anyone is interested in any of the original "Monster Heads" toys, as seen in this thread, I do have some available for sale. These are Mint / original unused 1960s stock.

I also have the original header card, as shown above.

PM me if you are interested!

I couldn't stand it...  the heads belong on rings and belong on the card.  I had to put them there.

Oh man. That is too cool!

It is!  8)

I have a nice card and a set of the rings, but I didn't have those ring bases so I used the narrower type that came in quantity with a small (3/4") Rat Fink lot I bought a few years back. I believe the bases I'm using are original to the '60s but they aren't as cool as those wide ones in the pic. However, they still fit the ring "heads" just fine.

Do those rings feature the head sculpts of the MPC Creature of Doom, Frankenstein Monster and Mummy as well as the Werewolf?

 ???

Yes. Here's the well worn pic again:

The rings are beside the Haunted Hulk and my Monster Head Rings display card is leaning against the right wall. Enlarge the pic for a better view. The pink Mummy ring was a duplicate that I've since sold.

I had one of those sets...cool.  I think unmentioned is the VAMPIRE head sculpt is there too... it's only that sixth creature that's the odd ball.

This is another bubblegum machine card, with Frankenstein... not sure if you got a capsule or a piece of gum...

My set of the neon version:

I also picked up one in the flat colored plastic which shows off the details so well (Vampire). Man, these things are hard to find these days.

Hey Man
That is probably most killer piece of Monster magic EVER in a display.
Sometimes people don't even know what they have. I wish I had half of that 60's Monster goodness.  Congrats and VERY Cool.

Thanks.

I appreciate all of it, but for me the Haunted Hulk blows everything else away.
