Surf Guitar
« on: April 16, 2010, 12:44:42 PM »
I am a fan of the Ventures and of course Dick Dale--though I will say when I'm in the mood for a Hawaiian shirt and a Fender I go for a Ventures cd more often.

Anyone else a fan?

Anyone  have any suggestions as to what else a Ventures fan might be turned on to?

Wow, where to start?! Here are a few other bands you may enjoy:

- Satan's Pilgrims
- The Bambi Molesters
- The Bomboras
- The Ramonetures
- The Sonics
- The 5,6,7,8's
- Link Wray

And if you like (or can stomach) country/western, Unknown Hinson and Junior Brown are fantastic guitarists

The Neanderthals are great -- but more garage rock (guitar whiz Eddie Angel is also in Los Straitjackets) with a surf influence.  Here's some live video (I was at this show!)
THE NEANDERTHALS - "HULA BABY"

There are plenty of artists who aren't strictly surf, but do some surf tunes -- the aforementioned Junior Brown being one of them.  Here he is showing his mad guitar skills.

Another versatile roots music performer with surf tendencies -- Deke Dickerson.

Famous Monsters       A surf band featuring Sean Yseult (White Zombie) on bass and guitar, she is called Devil Doll.  Vampire Girl on guitar, real name Brijitte West.  And Chic-Zilla on Drums and I can't remember her name.

Long live the UMA!

I love that Jr Brown action - it's not a medley but all the same song "Walk Don't Run"...my 60s band The SilverTones does that song and I'm going to copy that arrangement - (If you're in Mpls like Terry and Terry - 6/12 The Schooner Bar our debut)
