Dinosaurs!
« on: April 13, 2010, 09:07:37 PM »
There has gotta be some Monster Kids here who love Dinosaurs right?

In there own way I always kinda felt they went hand in hand--and they have more than their share of cameos in some of our classics.

What are some of your favorite great beasts?

I mean can you imagine looking up and seeing a Pterodactyl??...Or the insanity of size that was a Megaladon??

They do go hand in hand. My dad's a retired science teacher turned full-time geologist, so you can bet the toy box hosted some dinosaurs when we were small.
I love the Aurora Prehistoric Scenes model kits almost as much as the monsters. The T-Rex was one of the greates kits ever. And although not a dinosaur, I have to give a nod to the saber-toothed tiger, my favorite prehistoric animal. A few years back I was tempted to by an actual saber-toothed tiger skull at a fossil show (but you talk about $$$ for a collector's item...!!!)

I'm intrigued by the "star" of Jurassic Park 3, a cool dino if there ever was one. I forgot it's name, but it's a genuine species whose remains were discovered in either S. America or Asia.

Oh yeah, I probably started getting into dinosaurs about 47 years ago, when I first saw KING KONG.  Some of my first toys were dinosaurs.  Does anybody remember the big vinyl blow-up Sinclair Brontosaurus?  Not sure what year they came out, but I remember I loved that thing!  And yes, monsters & dinos went together like nobody's business.  I still remember seeing some of my favorites on the big screen.  DINOSAURUS!  THE LOST WORLD (1960), ONE MILLION YEARS B.C., etc.  Man, I loved the big brutes!  I took my toy dinos to school for "show-and-tell" and had them battle my army men at home.

And secretly, I still prefer the upright T-Rex of the old days, over the "correct stance" one.

Well, it's not a secret anymore, huh?

Some of the earliest toys I can remember were the Marx dinosaurs.  I had dinosaur toys, books, models. I've always loved all the dinosaurs, but my favorites were always the Ceratopians ( STYRACOSAURUS, TRICERATOPS, and PROTOCERATOPS ) of the Cretaceous period.  Dinosaurs were my first love until I discovered the Warren magazines and switched to monsters.  My best friend Kevin in South Carolina was a dinosaur lover as well, and we would bring our toys to play with at recess.  Not only dinosaurs, but I love the prehistoric mammals of the Cenozoic era as well.  I still have the Marx toys, and the Aurora Styracosaurus model.  Some time back I bought a rock with a Trilobite fossil, and recently I rebought four of the large Tootsie Toy blow-mold dinosaurs.  Like monsters, dinosaurs are something I have never outgrown.

The old Aurora Styracosaurus model (my favorite dinosaur), and the re-bought tootsie toys. Took forever to track down a white Triceratops, like the one Dogzilla chewed up decades ago.

Also a dinosaur fan. One of the first books I learned to read was about dinos. I was into them before I ever heard of Frankenstein or the Wolfman. My plastic dinos annihilated many h.o scale army guys military vehicles and flipped over tons of matchbox cars. And we all know there are a bunch of cool prehistoric creature movies. One of my favorite modern ones is Pterodactyl made for I think Showtime several years ago. Got the DVD.

Son of Monster Kid Opera Ghost is a bigger fan than I, although I enjoy them.

Recently got some tickets to see Walking with Dinosaurs when it returns to LA in September.

Ha! I feel the same way! What am I supposed to do with all my old plastic dinosaurs now?

There seems to be some kind of debate over the skull shape of Brontosaurus now too--apparently they have been debating for a long time though.

I guess we can only "know" so much right?

Anyway it doesnt bother me too much, some of my most epic battles happend with my Monogram snap-tite Wooly Mammoth Vs the all red Pterydactal--who looked very cool caught up in the Mammoth's tusks, fighting his way out.

I think I may have gotten my Dinosaur lessons from the Flintstones :)

Man that is one of my fave Dinos--I had no idea it had it's own film. I gotta check that out.

One of my all time faves is The Lost World. The original silent version.

I scored a really cool off of Amzon pretty cheap, cool box and it has 2 discs, the silent original (killer movie imho) and the remake in the 60's--which is actually really cool too.

I loved Dinosaurs as a kid and still today!  I did have both the Aurora kits and those plastic Dinosaurs.  I also had smaller plastic Dinosaurs about the size of the green army men.

Some of my favorites were the William Stout illustrated Dinosaurs book and the ones that I had in this post.
