Horror Videogames???
« on: February 07, 2010, 05:18:55 PM »
Anyone know of any really good horror videogames? I'm looking for some of the more obscure ones that people may not have heard of. This includes shooters, RPGs, MMOs, etc.

I would second the Silent Hill series. If you're looking for creepy and disturbing content, they just don't get any better than this.

Here are a few others I have played and enjoyed:

Dead Rising
Left 4 Dead
Fatal Frame
Dead Space
The House of the Dead

What platform are you looking for?...If youre talking modern stuff then I would hang tight for "Dantes Inferno" which has a strong horror element and really with XBOX 360 and PS3 there are tons of baddies that need slaying.

Here are a list of games off the top of my head (many of which I still own!)

Nintendo: Friday The 13th
Castle Vania (game totally rocks, movie in the works and still an ongoing franchise)
Shadowgate

Super Nintendo: Super Castle Vania

Sega: Ghost N Gobblins (aka Ghouls N Ghosts)
Altered Beast (Greek Mythology/Horror)

Sega Dreamcast: House Of The Dead (fantastic shooter, spawned some cool action figures too.)
Soul Reaver

Turbo Graphix 16: Slaughterhouse (one HELL of a horror game!)

Xbox: Army Of Darkness: Fist Full Of Boomstick

Then of courses your Silent Hill, Resident Evil, ....OH how could I forget Sega's "Zombies Ate My Neighboors!"

Godzilla: Monster Melee was really good and available on Xbox and PS

All the Castle Vania's including Bloodline and Simon's Quest....

Then  when you go WAY back to the Atari days you had "Frankenstein" on the 2600.....

Lastly the greatest in my humble opinon in horror and fighting games...you just cant beat Capcom's Dark Stalkers!!!.....Zombies, Wolfmen, the Mummy, a Yetti,...a whole lot more...doing classic street fighter moves!...You can also play with a few of the Dark Stalker charecters in the now classic "Marvel Vs Capcom and Marvel Vs Capcom 2"

They have even had a short Comic Book run......I know I was spastic with my "order" on the systems and how they came out...sure I missed a few too, but hope it gave you some help!

For the Gameboy I have Dracula:Crazy Vampire for Gameboy Color (don't let the box art or title fool you. It's pretty good) For Gameboy Advanced I have Monster Force which is Frankenstein, Dracula, Wolfman as teens and the game is like Gauntlet. Both licenced by Universal.

Always was a fan of any of the Resident evil games. Any of those can be scary when played at night alone.

Most recently in call of duty 5 "the world at war" which is a world war II game there is a mode called NAZI ZOMBIES where its pretty much stay alive as long as you can type game against zombie nazi's. There are 4 different levels and this is a great game to play also. You can play solo or with up to 4 players.

thats about all i can think of...

Oh, yea - anybody ever play dr. Jekyll and mr. hyde for NES? That was a TERRIBLE game!!! However i had a werewolf game for NES which the name escapes me but was AWESOME!

Ah War of the Monsters! I do enjoy that very much. I'll have to give Darkstalkers a try. I never have but I had heard of it.

When Darkstalkers came out I was like 19 yrs old? They had the coin-op (member those?!) in the foyer of a local dinner...when I tell you I spend hours playing that game to the point where I was sweating...thats an understatement.

Its all the same Capcom/Street-Fighter moves...but man Dimitri being the most balanced charecter is basically musclebound vampire in threads from the 1700's...his background was a haunted mansion and before each round he would appear in a ring of fire......good Lord I loved that game!!

Yeah man, Zombies Ate My Neighboors was fantastic...water pistol Uzi's....zombies in the mall, that was really fun game!

If you want super gore...this an old outdated MS DOS deal, try Carmageddon!...Basically it was Death Race 2000, you had to unlock cars that were very nasty to say the least. A funny car with a huge spike infront called "Vlad The Impaler"...a white bronco monster truck called "O.K. Stimpson" and many more.

You got "extra style points" for doing things like pulling an "E- Brake" onto the football field and smearing them around..running down Santa and his reindeer...and if you were lucky you would find the little "Stormtrooper" that would pop up now and again and kill him too lol.

Some more mentions: Killer Instinct a Nintendo Coin-Op that was very hard to play, but had a Wolfman character, and a Skeleton that looked like a Harryhausen Sinbad type thing named "Spinal"--I played with him most.

How about "Destroy All Humans!" that is pretty recent and alot of fun...captures an Atomic Age suburb being invaded by flying saucers..and you are the "martian"...lots of little B Rated movie innuendos and some pretty funny stuff. Thats a fun one too.

I still have Jelkyll and Hyde for the NES. Very slow moving game. You couldn't make Dr. Jekyll jump fast enough to dodge things. Never got past the 3rd level.  I have that werewolf game also. It is called Werewolf the Apocolypse. Fairly good game but that 5th level is a killer. The siren just keeps going on and on until you get a headache. One good NES game I have is Festers Quest from the Addams Family. Good game but it was made before memory cards were invented which you really could use for this one.

FESTERS QUEST! YES!

That was a great game - i remember renting it as a kid and leaving the system on for like a week straight so i wouldn't loose my progress after school - and i remember someone bumped the system and lost the nice dust free connection i had made w/ the cartridge. DAMMIT!
