I-Scream spoons
« on: January 29, 2010, 01:14:40 PM »
This is one of those items/collections that has always been on my the list but I never jumped on any of them, until now that is.  Just picked up 2 Wolfman, a Frankenstein and Creature all in red.  I haven't really seen a lot of discussion on these little plastic wonders so here one is.

First of all value;  What is a low price for these?  What about higher end?  Does color matter?  As with most UM stuff I assume that the Creature commands a slightly higher price then Frankenstein and the Mummy and Wolfman probably garner about equal value.

Next up any monster kid memories of these?  Did anyone here actually get to use them back in the 60's?

And while the topic is here we can also discuss the stir sticks, which I will now be on the hunt for.

Last but not least is there any truth to the rumor that for one reason or another these spoons make eating monster cereals ten thousand times more fun?

I haven't been following the auctions on these recently so I don't know about current prices.  But the unopened bags of these can be pricey.

There is also the much rarer yellow spoons.  I don't think the stir-stick ever came in yellow.

I recently completed my set that I started a few years ago. I paid about $15 each for Frankie, Wolfie and Mummy. Oddly enough, I got the Creature one last for only $6 on eBay. Go figger.

Ebay is very subjective depending on how an item is listed, when it's listed, for how long it's listed, etc.  But I was figuring somewhere around $10-15 a spoon.  The other day I had some time on my hands and decided to look at listings for each monster individually, something I like to do now and then.

While searching "Wolfman" I happened across a listing for "4 Vintage Spoons-Universal Studios-Wolf Man," for an opening bid of $4 that would end in 15 hours.  With the following description and a picture of the spoons;

"This auction is for a set of 4 red plastic spoons made for Universal Studios, circa 1960's or 1970's.  They are two Wolfman, one Frogman, and one Frankenstein.  Each is marked "Zoo Pics" on one side and "Universal Pics. Co. Inc." on the other.  They are 5 1/2" long and in excellent condition."

Now that seemed like a hell of deal to me and had these been listed with some of the keywords; "Zoo Pik", "Creature From the Black Lagoon", "Universal Monster" or "Frankenstein" I think the auction would have actually got some notice and a very different ending.  It also would have helped to end the auction on Friday night or a Saturday or Sunday but the ending was on Friday at noon when most people are tied up at work.  All I could do was wait, figuring that somewhere out there several others were watching and waiting but in the end no one else seemed to notice the auction.  Or maybe watchers just assumed it would end above what they were willing to pay?  I ended up winning the auction uncontested for the opening bid plus 5 bucks shipping.  I just wish the Mummy would have been included but I think I can pick up a Mummy somewhere and still feel I got a deal on the set as a whole.

I'd say $9 with shipping for those 4 is a good price.  Another win for the UMA team.

Finally adding the Mummy to my I-Scream spoons!  Haven't even been checking Ebay as of late but was on the other day and found this listing; UNIVERSAL PICTURE OLD SPOON MUMMY MONSTER MADE IN USA; with a little over 1 day left in the auction I had to jump on it!  I got it (auction ended Saturday) uncontested for $5.99 including shipping.  Happy Valentine's Day to me!

Red and grey spoons are in the $10 - $15 range.  Yellow spoons are more difficult to find and can cost a bit more.

This is a full set of all the Zoo Piks made in various colors.

This is a bagged set of spoons.  There were also bagged sets of stirs.

There are 2 shades of yellow spoon.  I'm not sure why.

I pulled a box of them out of the basement of a restaurant in Seattle.  The box had printing on the side and called them "Graveyard Grey" and "Blood Red".  It was printed in green on white cardboard.  Most of the spoons were gone, but there were will quite a few left.  I kept a set and wholesaled the box.  I think I saw the box in Shawn Murphy's collection (RIP)

All you need is a few people that would split a set with you. I would be down for just having Frank.

Yeah, or I could just buy what they're selling and resell the ones I don't want, but that just makes more work for me.  :P
