As a collector myself I hate being denied the oppertunity to own something I have always wanted. I think it's safe to say that there is no way in hell Sideshow, Neca, Hot Toys or any other company is going to produce an IT figure. If things turn around there is a possibility that AT may reconsider releasing IT? Or maybe Executive Replicas may consider picking "it" up. If they go out of business your chances will most likely be zero of having anyone else consider making this figure. We work for and with these companies. I hear behind the scenes stories of the obstacles that have to be overcome. It is a wonder sometimes that anything gets made at all at the small numbers these items are produced in.
...

Like you I am also a toy collector and I agree with you that we cannot stop ourselves whenever there are new toy collections on the toy store or in commercials. I guess that is the nature of a toy collector anyway I am still completing my Power Ranger collection I hope you can help me find some collectibles. Maybe I can also post some pictures of my collection here too if it is okay.

Shouldn't the research into the viability of producing the product have taken place before the purchasing of the license?? I hate to see resources invested and wasted like this. It's a shame because it hurts the company's ability to move forward with other projects, which isn't good for any of us.

Just wanted to comment on this:

1) It is sadly far too common for retails, long before production, to say "Oh yes, we'd love to see a Wolfman racing car set!" (NOTE: I just made that up) Then, once you are ready to take pre-orders and have already sculpted and made molds have the very same retailers say "Oh, I thought you meant something else..." or "Wolfman racing isn't hot anymore".

2) If you shop around ie do  research before you get a license it is not uncommon for another company to snatch it up or start a bidding war.

3) People don't know what they want and neither do retailers. The story I like to tell best and is most famous is Toy Story. Retailers were invited in at each stage of the game and nobody was interested. NOBODY! They all thought it would flop. Consumers looked at the product and had no interest in buying.....then the movie hit. Toy Story toy shortages made the news. They even joked about it in the sequel.

I don't mean to sound bitter, I love the industry, but its a hard business and its nothing like BIG!

This is why customizers, garage kit makers, and talented sculptors and mask makers doing one of a kind projects are so successful. There's too much bullcrap on the licensing end. Like a company believing their b-movie from 1940 is gold. Then if a license is purchased and granted the bottom could always fall out if the production company gets cold feet.

But if companies are now going to base their decision to produce on pre-orders, then none of these items will see the light of day. Its too hard to keep track of pre-orders once the waiting period goes from months, to quarters, to ....years. Then gets cancelled. In this economy, and the constant upheaval on the news people arent spending as much. Its easier to pass up a pre-order. Its not an impulse buy. Plus~placing pre-orders doesnt always insure an item will ever see the light of day anyway, so alot of collectors are just shrugging their shoulders and vocalizing the fan-boy favorite of "meh." to express their interest or lack thereof for a product that may never get made. It might be cautious for the toy makers, but it also might cause a lot of people to think:"Who cares?"

I truly can't say enough great things about amok time toys. They have the balls to take on a license no one else will take a chance on. They are putting out some great figures in my opinion. Not to mention anyone who has met the owner knows he puts everything he has into his product and is a super nice guy. I hope he keeps putting out great toys.

I will always feel that Amok Times truly crowning achievement is Rondo Hatton. The box art, the sculpt, the clothes---its a magnificent item. The riskiest venture no doubt. As only those of us who are the most die hard know who the man was, but  still their best item produced. If they never get anything else out~they hit gold with this figure.

I definately second that, Anton. The Rondo figure stands proudly with the very best of the Sideshow 12" figures.

Just got in after another night of the city and a day full of Toy Fair.  Got to hang out with NekroDave for the first time since Creature Fest 2004, great to see him and meet his pals, the Collection DX fellows among them.  Saw Mark Huckabone and talked about the Mego display boxes he just bought, the Monsters one among 'em.  Walked a chunk of the lower floor of Toy Fair, saw only two UM licensed products: Neca's new bobbleheads, which are great (they're gonna release silver screen versions of the older ones btw), and Amok Time's huge Creature and Frankenstein Monster.

Had a long chat with Paul at booth.  Man, what a great guy, and not just because he's a monster fan who's making an absolute fantasy into toy reality.  He took a chunk of time to talk about the stuff he loves and why he's doing what he's doing, as well as the biz side of it, way beyond any sort of sales pitch, and I didn't even place store orders today.  He even graciously offered to open the case for photography, which you can see I accepted.

The Creature and Frankenstein (resin prototypes of rotocast vinyl production pieces) are just jaw droppingly amazing.  The final wholesale cost and retail price are still to be determined (it's Chinese New year right now, and the factory didn't get everything set before TF it seems, not an uncommon occurrence in my experience), but he estimated in the range we've been talking about on here, with production runs between 750 and 1000 (orders will determine that to a degree).  We also spoke of the Universal license, and his flat out love of the monsters, which this project demonstrates 1000% percent.  More Universal figures will come if the support for these is strong enough.  The other stuff he alluded to having on the horizon is just as cool.  Plus, a Horror of Party Beach 12 inch figure and Groovie Goolies statues!!!

Why is Amok Time still carrying this Frankenstein figure in their catalog?

Hey, it keeps us talking. Maybe because it looks cooler than anything else in their catalog.
