I hope I don't crash the system uploading these, but I just found scans from the May 1954 issue of Mechanics Illustrated with a cover article on the Creature from the Black lagoon.

Enjoy!

Monsters For Sale

That's great!

I look forward to reading the story later.  I always love it when our monsters show up in unusual places.

Thanks for sharing that with us.

Glad to pass it on. I also posted some scans of a Kong article from 1933 in another thread!

I suppose everyone has seen the LIFE "Ghastly Look Of A Film Fad" article. (Seems like it was posted at the Y group?) If anybody wants to see the Nov. '52 Pop Sci article on War of the Worlds ("Hollywood Builds Flying Saucers"), I can post that.

WANTED!

Any other contemporanious main stream mag (or pulps) articles on '50s sci-fi movies. Just a few most wanted:

Popular Mechanics - May 1950 (Destination Moon article)
Astounding SF - July 1950 (another DM article)
Astounding SF - Nov. 1951 (When Worlds Collide)
Astounding SF - May 1955 (Conquest of Space)
Colliers (mid '50s issue) article on '50s Universal movie creatures, with the color photo of Creature, Mutant and Xenomorph. I have the color photo, but would like the rest of the article.

I have a copy of the Mechanics Illustrated CREATURE issue I'd sell for $25 (I'll pay postage) if anyone is interested. It is missing the back cover, but the front cover is super clean and the magazine itself- including the article - is complete and fine. PM me if interested.

For some reason, these scans are being shrunk, so if you can't read the text, just save the pics and open them in your photo editor.

Thanks for posting that Mike. You've reminded me that I'm way overdue in viewing 'From Hell It Came'. The walking tree monster better known as a "Tabunga". One of my faves.

The story I've always heard (and have no reason to doubt) is that the Mechanics Illustrated came out before the movie and was the first look anyone outside the production crew got at the Creech.  It was a promotional teaser type article that spurred a lot of interest in the film.

Creech appeared on the Abbott & Costello TV show on February 21, 1954, so, even if the Mech Illus May issue hit the stands 2 months before the cover date, people would have already had a chance to see the Creature.

Thanks Mike, glad to get that straight.  Funny how these storied grow.  I've heard that about the Mechanics Illustrated from many different people over the years.

And the movie was released on March 5, 1954, which is likely before the May issue of MI.
