In the early to mid 80's around Halloween time in music class my awesome music teacher would show a movie with the projector and played a record to go along with it. Basically it was scenes...so a piece of music would come on and she would turn to the next still image on the projection screen.

I cant remember all of it, but for the most part is was basically classical music that showed the cemetery at night, then you would hear the church bell and very upbeat, happy celebration music..with that music the skeletons would rise from the grave and dance in a circle. Then the music got very sad and the party was over..the skeletons let go of each other got sad and went back to the grave as the sun rose and they had to stop "partying".

I was captivated by this and can remember running home to tell mom about it. The autumn colors, with the church in background and the skeletons dancing in celebration...it was the coolest. (that class and picture DIRECTLY led me to all things heavy metal)

Now for the fun part...I have no idea where to look for such a thing or what its even called so I can use a keyword here or there. Honestly right now I couldnt even play it..so my options are this: find something online that plays it. and hopefully I can download it ..or be a champion and buy the original film and record plus find an old and ..keyword cheap projector.

If anyone knows what Im talking about whatsoever, I could sure use another guy to bump heads with,  I'll take any info you have!  In the meantime I am setting my wristwatch to Mike Scott time. When I give the signal he will come. and he'll know what to do!

The original filmstrip was called Danse Macabre, if it's the one I'm thinking of. The music was the famous work 'Danse Macabre' composed by Camille Saint-Saens... there are numerous video renditions of it on Youtube (some of them gorgeous!), but I have yet to find the 'real' filmstrip one...
I remember this one from my late 70's/early 80's school days pretty well, and your description immediately brought it all back.
I am on the hunt.

Yep, as oldsters recall, BL, that was a "filmstrip."

The later ones had Automatic Advance; but I recall when the record had to annouce to the projector operator, "Next Picture Now," or somesuch.

They were 35mm, so I had a brilliant Math teacher who even made his own!

Best,

Thanks guys! I'm hunting myself Mike C. I'm glad to see a few of us actually remembered what this was. Hopefully something will pop up!

I've been hunting for a film strip I saw in school in the 70s about Marvel Comic's Black Panther that had messages about both crime and racism. I've never seen it turn up anywhere since.

Well so far this is as close as I could get to it on youtube. This is def gonna be a good hunt and I'm almost inclined to call the music dept at my old school if this keeps up.

Not anything nearly as fantastic as the original  but somewhat interesting.

Wow, I was totally entertained by that.

I hope we track down your version.

Love that music. I remember the first Mrs. Roebuck dancing beautifully to that piece as THE GHOST OF CHRISTMAS YET TO COME in an unconventional  production of A CHRISTMAS CAROL.

I believe you also used it in Dr. Shocker's Halloween Spooktacular!

Just bumping this up because I found another version of this on YT, and while I don't know if it is indeed the one you recall, BL, I happen to remember seeing it in the late 70's/early 80's.

Danse Macabre Camille Saint-Saëns 1980s cartoon, PBS, Halloween, Music

It looks like a slide or filmstrip presentation, modified into seeming 'animation' by clever editing.

Just a thought. I've not forgotten the hunt!

thanks for finding that mikec. but that is definitely not the original. the artwork there is from someone named david prebenna looks kind of like a hannah barbara cartoon. i'm pretty sure the original artwork was more like real paintings. or at least watercolor. from my own hunt -- and i hope you're not giving up yours -- i've found that it was a filmstrip from 1968. made by educational audio visual and illustrated by harold dexter hoopes. it was distributed free to schools as part of a music appreciation program (remember when we had things like that for our schools?!!). still looking for someone who has transferred it to a digital format.

Wow I forgot about this thread!  :P

Anyway, no Mike C. that is not it--though I did enjoy that one, thanks for posting!

I would venture to say the one I saw was probably from the 60s (?)

I knew that wasn't the one we were originally searching (and continue to search) for, I just thought it was yet another cool rendition!
I hope someone who has this strip somehow reads this thread... I mean, seriously, anyone holding onto a Danse Macabre filmstrip is pure UMA material anyway!

The hunt goes on...

I too have been searching for this for a while, saw it in the mid 80's.  If I ever get a hold of the filmstrip, I'll transfer it to share will all.  There are a lot of people looking for this it seems.

You know, this thing has been so ellusive that what happens is I get hot on hunting for it for a week...make ZERO progress and then life takes over and I forget all about it.

Actually seeing this thread bumped just reminded me about it once more...back to work we go.

Happy All Hallow's Day, folks---and sorry it took me some time to get word to you, but this is your lucky day:
I posted the 1968 Danse Macabre filmstrip to YouTube; here's the link:
Danse Macabre filmstrip with Harold Dexter Hoopes watercolors

Well, I'm not sure if that will post as a link--but it's the address nonetheless.
The title is:
"Danse Macabre filmstrip with Harold Dexter Hoopes watercolors"

I was looking for this, too--but only because I moved recently, and wasn't sure where my videotape went.  I thought I'd make life easy & just watch it on the web (for Halloween).  Lo and behold, I discovered that you and others were looking for it---
So, although I didn't find my best copy, the one I dug up was good enough to pass through an analog to digital converter & post to YouTube.  That might sound easy for you high-tech gurus, but it was the first time I've done anything like it...

Anyhow, I wanted you to have a nice Halloween surprise---  Sorry I'm a bit late, but please enjoy it nonetheless!
If and when I dig up something better, I'll post that, too, and let you know.
Take care,    ----MuseumPieces
