"Happy Brithday, Mr. Clive!"
« on: January 19, 2008, 11:05:23 AM »

January 20th will be Colin Clive's 108th birthday so kindly remember poor old Clive with a toast in his honor.
This photo is one of my most prized treasures and is an actual news photo of Colin Clive arriving in New York harbor in 1930 on the ocean liner "The Bremen". Safe to guess that it was in the Autumn since he's wearing a heavy coat, so that means he was in New York for his Broadway debut in "Overture" that opened on December 6th, 1930.
I have a roundabout family connection with this photo---my Opa, before he went to work designing aircraft for Focke-Wulf and Messerschmidt, worked in the Bremen shipyards and helped to install the engines in "The Bremen"--he told me this in 1991 during my visit to Germany to see all of my relatives there;it was my birthday and I wanted to see the Obersee Museum again(that I first saw at the age of 10 in 1969) where there's a scale model of this ship on display. My Opa seemed very proud of the fact he worked on this ship.
This photo stands in my "Clive Corner" in the living room with a few other photos of Clive and a matchbook from the Roosevelt Hotel where he lived during the filming of "Journey's End".

By all means watch "The Bride of Frankenstein" in celebration but if you can get hold of a copy of "Journey's End" you'll see what a really great actor Colin Clive was.

       "Meek"(It's a Clive!)

Thank you, Meek!  I have another picture from the same setting, with his hat on.  He looks marvelous!  You're right about JOURNEY'S END.  It's superb.  I have a VHS tape that was taped off BBC 4.  The friend who sent it to me must have gone through halifax to get it tranferred from the British PAL format to regular USA...  All fans...keep a watch on EBAY.  USA DVDs show up every once in a while...
