Holy Cats!  This has to be the new record for the highest amount paid on eBay for a single uncarded Kooky Spookys figure! :o

http://cgi.ebay.com/RARE-Vintage-Hasbro-KOOKY-SPOOKY-GHOST-Doll-Figure-Toy-/220665283704?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3360ad0478

I mean, I love those toys as much as anyone else, but seriously, I would never pay over $900 for one.  That's just bananas!

JEEZ...That IS crazy! I've had mine since i was a kid and would hate to part with it, but the way things have been going lately around here, i may have to. I actually lost his banjo back in the day, but found one on ebay a few years ago.

$910 for a loose Brother Mortimer...Sweet mother of Christmas!!!!  :o

And another one ended today at $866!  :o

Damn, I'm almost tempted to put my Brother Mortimer on ebay! Pay off a month's rent!

The highest a Brother Mortimer has ever gone, MOC, was $585 in 2006.
The highest a Brother Mortimer has ever gone, loose and NM, with a banjo, was $361 in 2005.

Another loose, NM, with banjo went in 2005 for $200.

Those recent prices are outrageous. Wow. It must be nice to have enough money to be able to bid them into the stratosphere, but just wow!  :o

Of course, both were damn near dead mint, although the one at $866 seems to have a cut rubber band in place of the original string for the banjo. By far the two nicest, cleanest, brightest Brother Mortimers I've ever seen selling.  But still...

I've seen MOC Brother Morts go for at least half the amount either of those two went for on eBay!  This is beyond nuts!  Why are BM's so hot right now?  The Daddy Booregard and Grandma McCreak that were listed at the same time only went for $226 and $167, and those were the most minty examples I've seen on eBay for quite some time.  But, yeah, I'd love to be wealthy enough to snag me a few Kooky Spookys for a few thousand clams.  On the other hand, I don't think I could sleep at night knowing I had just paid that much money on a silly rubber finger puppet...and I LOVE Kooky Spookys!  I mean, really, what do you do with it?  Invite your friends over, point at it and say "Look! There's the thing I spent nearly $1000 on!" tynhrt

Hope it's okay to resurrect (pun intended) this ghost thread. I experimented with photographing my trio of Kooky Spookys in the dark tonight, using my iPhone. Weirdly, the in-the-dark shots had the ghosts almost invisible, until I hit the auto-correct button after downloading the files onto my laptop. Mortimer's guitar is sooooo bright in the dark. His black elastic banjo strap is finally perishing and stretching. Note that Grandma holds a paper cocktail umbrella these days.

I still have some more Kooky Spookys material, and will resume listing it at a later date.

Toy Ranch, have you added new Kooky Spooky information anywhere yet?

I'm absolutely fascinated by that prototype artwork, and the progression of names and accessories. Several times now, I've been about to tackle a Kooky Spooky page for Wikipedia, and was wondering how we'd go about referencing the amazing information that accompanied the Thermo copies you own. I guess it's paperwork accompanying the deceased estate of Patti? (I know I've sometimes linked URLs to Wikipedia material and it gets challenged because they want references to actual published books and articles, not just websites. Ironic, I know.)

As an unpdate on my own quest, I have just secured a Daddy Booregard (been waiting to own one since Christmas 1968), to join Grandmother, Mortimer and Spook'em. Also finally picked up an Avon "Gilroy the ghost" from the c 1975. (I think I told the story earlier about the little girl we knew, who loved our ghosts so much, and we bought her a Gilroy from our local Avon lady.)

My challenge I've set myself for the holiday break is to attempt to use some glow-in-the-dark Fimo clay to do 3D models of the two male ghost designs ultimately dropped from the original line. Maybe the names should reshuffle as well? Cousin Cadava (for alliteration purposes?) and Uncle Gilghouly, since their best attributes all went across to the final Daddy Booregard?

By the way, has anyone else realised the other puns in the toys' names? The Rigor Mortimer label on one of the prototypes is hilarious, but of course, the humor is lost when he become Brother Mortimer. Cadaver and casket are fairly obvious. And "Betty Boo" was a homage to Betty Boop?

Grandmother Macreak's name seemingly comes from the Irish folk song (and silent movie), "Mother Machree" (and often quoted by Chief O'Hara in the 60s Batman); the look of Mama Kaskit, her 60s hair (and her "flower power" accessory) is probably a homage to singer Mama Cass - and I only just realised that the clock on Daddy Booregard, even though originally belonging to Gilghouly, seems to suggest "Father Time" (or a grandfather clock face?). I've seen rappers wearing huge clocks on chains around their necks. Any idea on where that idea comes from?

Am I missing a pun in "Cousin Gilghouly" that would be lost if he became the uncle instead? I'm guessing the mustache on Ghostly Gomez suggested Gomez Addams (from Charles Addams' comic strip)? I just noticed there is a European comic strip with a "Gaston", too.

Ah, just discovered SimoneMarie1's amazing Flickr photos:

Mmmm. You need to replace the "at" symbol manually.

UPDATE!

Late for dinner! by Therin of Andor, on Flickr

http://therinofandor.blogspot.com/2010/12/late-for-dinner.html

Despite the enormous watch and chain he wears around his neck, the Kooky Spooky patriarch, Daddy Booregard, tries to explain to Grandmother Macreak just why he's 41 years late for dinner. And he's brought a freeloading ring-in, Gilroy from Avon, with him.

The Kooky Spookys are glow-in-the-dark finger puppet toys from 1968. As a kid, I really, really thought I was getting a Daddy Booregard for Easter 1969, after my brothers and I scored Kooky Spookys for Christmas 1968. (But thanks eBay! Daddy and Gilroy both arrived today, from different locales in the USA. Gilroy is from the 70s and contains 70s-vintage lip balm.)

I'm sure I remember a 1968 pricetag of 69 cents, or thereabouts, in 1968. Daddy Booregard cost me $250 on eBay "Buy it now!" just before Christmas. A bargain to rekindle such strong childhood memories of our much-loved toys.
Thiptho lapth,

Regards, Ian.

My challenge I've set myself for the holiday break is to attempt to use some glow-in-the-dark Fimo clay to do 3D models of the two male ghost designs ultimately dropped from the original line. I'm halfway finished! Based on two actual, unused, prototype designs of Patti Peticolas's "Kooky Spookys" (1968), I created these two new ghosts today by combining equal parts yellow and glow-in-the-dark Staedtler brand "Fimo Soft" modelling compund and baking them in the oven for 30 minutes each. Next I have to add painted facial features, again working from the original designs. Gilghouly (who originally name-swapped with Daddy Booregard, and was also a cousin) will carry a shotgun, and the one I'm calling Cousin Cadava (originally Gaston Ghost and then Daddy Cadava on paper) already has a "Hero" medal pinned to his chest and will hold a fencing foil.

Just made Cadava's fencing foil out of a barbeque skewer, painted with chrome nail polish. I've also used that silver on his "hero" medal.

With a little spare bit of Fimo, I also made a little skull on a stick to create a "death rattle" for my signless Baby Spook'em. When I saw that reference on the "Baby Boo" model sheet, I just had to create one! Also love the skeletal rocking horse, which Patti seems to have crossed out as too gross for little kids?
