Model Night
« on: January 14, 2008, 08:43:28 PM »
Depending on what type of job one has in order to bring home the bacon, it's kinda difficult at times to get friends together for a shindig because of schedules.  This one has a prior commitment, this one has to work, etc. You know the story. I was thinking about ways to get everyone together to have some fun.  I came up with the idea of "Model Night" since my closest friends also share my interest and it's one of the things that brought us all together in one way or another. The idea was to hold this event once a month on a Friday or Saturday night.  I hosted my first model night in October 2007 and what an enjoyable time!  We've had them every month since and am now getting requests to host them when the month hasn't even passed yet. Ya gotta put your foot down sometimes, though. lol  There are a few basic rules that must be adhered to: everyone has to bring a monster themed model kit to paint or something artsy-fartsy that's monster related and bring some treat for the food table.  So, my boyfriend sets up the long table, we put on it the Universal Monsters tablecloth and the model kit table is up and running. The big screen TV loops monster movies (so far, we've played "The Devil Bat", "The Tingler", "House of Frankenstein", "Ghost of Frankenstein",  "Voodoo Man", among others). The table of yummies has pizza, chips, dips, sodas and of course, Universal Monster plates, cups and napkins (while supplies last!) to hold the yummies.  We've added a new rule that for each Model Night that one person bring an added "monster goodie" to commemorate that evening.  Nothing big, just a fun little something to add to our collections.  Has anyone here ever tried this or something similiar to it? I'm always looking for new ideas to keep it rolling and make it always interesting fun.  Of course, our friendship makes it a great time.  Hearing my one friend Don recite dialogue from "House of Frankenstein"  is priceless. He never fails to crack us all up. Just don't get him started up reciting Lugosi lines from the "Monogram 9".  ;D

Find below is the poster I designed for our first official Model Night...Yes, you did read that one line right about "an insane weiner dog". I have a 3 year old dachshund named Schultz von Rathbone and he's nuts!

Aw, man! So fun... we used to do that every week for YEARS when I was living in L.A. Models, movies, paint fumes, crazy pets, crazy food... just too much fun! I wish I could be there.

Yeah, I think it will become a tradition in these parts. As long as the enthusiasm is there, I don't see "Model Night" coming to an end any time soon.  They are a lot of fun to host and so far, so good.  :D

I finally finished up my last model night project. I bought this at Chiller probably 2 years ago and for two years, it stayed in the box.  If it wasn't for model night, it would probably still be in the box. I'm a little rusty at models, but I think it turned out pretty good considering.

The "famous" and "of filmland" were the toughest to do even with black ink.  The lines weren't deep enough for the words to really come out.

Looks beautiful! I like the pinks/fleshtones on the chin especially, very keloid-burn like!
And you make a great point about model night(s) as a weekly thing; namely, there are kits we have sitting around for years that would probably never get done any other way. If you have one evening a week devoted to it, you'll get it done AND be able to convince your spouse that MORE models are needed for purchase, haha!
Also, you get to watch others' progress with your own.
Modeling and Model Night are excellent hobbies to get hooked on. I wish I could join you guys!

Please post more pics of your model nights as you get them!

Thanks, Mike!

I think, considering the fact that I'm a little rusty with model painting, it turned out pretty good under the circumstances.  If all goes well this Saturday night, I'll be playing happy hostess to another model night.  The only thing that would kill the plans is if the weather got goofy again, but, so far, so good!  All looks clear.

Saturday night should be fun. I'll try to get some pix, but if I'm too busy being the hostess with the mostest, I'll at least post on how it went.

This time around, I'm going to FINALLY attempt to paint a Claude Rains POTOpera bust that I've had for a number of years. I bought it at a Chiller Con and have been patiently waiting to paint it. These model nights provide a perfect opportunity to get down and do some paintin'! I can't wait!

I am really going to take my time with this bust of CR, so this might take two model nights to paint correctly. I'm not rushing this one. This is a lot more detailed than the FM cover one, so I want to really plan this one out.

After I finish the CR bust, I have a Fredric March as Mr. Hyde and a kickin' Basil Rathbone as 1940s Universal styled Sherlock Holmes. I'm kinda antsy to paint the Rathbone, but I want to get some more practice in before I do it.  I wanna be ready!

So far, we have planned to play on the TV: Planet Terror (I've been dying to see this Grindhouse flick), The Raven (1935) and possibly Horror Island.  I still haven't mapped out the movie schedule. It's more fun to go with the flow on that issue. So, I'll pull a few flicks and see what everyone is in the mood for on that particular night.

More to come...........

What a great idea. My problem is that I have NO talent when it comes to painting anything , but a wall!

We used ot have BOOGEDY SCHOOL here in LA. It wa smostly make-up guys and me. The idea wa son Saturday mornings we'd eat cereal and watch one good horror  film and one bad film. Pluse any short subjects of interest.
Say, Bride of Frankestein and something by Ed Wood.

Sadly, as time marched forward those mornings have been stolen by AYSO soccer games, Basketball and God knows what else that keeps me busy when I should be relaxing.

Claudin, thnaks for sparking some nice memories.
