Jaymar monster puzzles, the discussion

(1/7) > >>

darkmonkeygod:
Richard and Tom S. both posted images of the Jaymar puzzles in the Image Depository
http://universalmonsterarmy.com/forum/index.php?topic=492.0

and Richard wrote of a borded with yellow on three sides puzzle that is a little bit of a puzzlement, so I thought this thread would be a good place to yap about the legendary Jaymar Monster puzzles.

Much has been made of these being pulled from shelves due to their gruesomely amazing graphics, but that seems to be just an urban legend stemming from an old ebay listing.  Anyone know anything about it?

These started release in 1963, and the Mummy may have been produced the next year.  Richard, do you know?

There are supposedly 4 versions of each: a tray puzzle, small (60+ piece 10x14), medium (100+ piece 15x20), and large (100+ piece 17x22), but as yet no one has popped up with the largest size of the Mummy.

The tray puzzles have two variations; with and without a yellow boarder.

I've seen two different layouts to the cut of the smallest puzzle (yeah I was trying to mix and match incomplete ones).  One is as Tom presented in the above thread - fairly square pieces, the other has a more dynamic cut to the puzzle shapes.  No idea of the how or why.

More to add as I find the pix.

Hi Shannon~
Good that you started a discussion here.

These "yellow boarder" examples really "puzzle" me (pun intended).

First, a close up partial scan of a regular "tray" puzzle. The overall tray puzzles have yellow boarders on all sides but those boarders AND a good bit of the image remain a permanent part of the tray when all the pieces are removed. And, rather than being a rectangular cutout, the outer pieces are rounded and wavy edged. The overall size of the tray puzzle is 11" x 14"
See image below...

so far, so good.

Richard:
Next, here is a pic of the "tray" puzzle at the top. Then come the 2 "yellow boarder" puzzles. You will see that the yellow boarder appears on only 3 of the 4 sides. The last side has image right to the edge. AND, these 2 puzzles are 14" wide, like the tray puzzle, but only 9 + 7/8" high instead of 11" (that's why some of the image and the last yellow boarder is missing). I thought that maybe the 2 puzzles "mate" at the boarderless edges to form a double image super big puzzle, but no. Also, I wondered if someone had trimed both puzzles, but no, the pieces are full right to the edge...and perfectly formed and straight.

I'm stumped on this.

The only thing I can figure is MAYBE, the puzzles ARE slightly larger tray puzzles...missing the trays...AND are rectangular cut rather than rounded and wavy cutout like the Frankenstein tray example I show. I just don't know as I'm not the original owner of these and got them just this way.

See why I'm puzzled?

Richard:
Lastly, the pieces from the "yellow boarder" examples I have are thicker than the pices from the tray puzzles and the 3 boxed sizes. The 3 images below will show the same 2 pieces...a corner piece (upper right) from the Dracula "yellow boarder" and a corner piece (lower left) from the Frankenstein "tray" puzzle. Note the edge image...the yellow boarder piece is thicker in both appearance and feel.

Hope someone has some ideas on these 2 puzzles....thanks for putting up with my long ramble!
Best,
Richard

Tom Smith Monsternut:
Hmmm ... very interesting ! Now I'll have to look at mine closer :)
Of the 4 that I have they are all complete except the Wolfman that one is short about 10 pieces.

Wow I'm impressed Richard ..You are a fountain of knowledge when it comes to Monster stuff . ;D

Best..
