Aurora Monster Contest Plaques
« on: January 06, 2008, 03:33:12 PM »
These two ended on Ebay this week:

1st Place:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Aurora-1964-Original-1st-Place-Master-Monster-Contest_W0QQitemZ220187628343QQihZ012QQcategoryZ1192QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

2nd Place:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Aurora-1964-Original-2st-Place-Master-Monster-Contest_W0QQitemZ220187629145QQihZ012QQcategoryZ1192QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Now I'm not sure how companies do these contests, but one would think there would be only one "first place", one "second place", etc, right? If so, wouldn't these be one of a kind items and as such, fairly cheap at those prices? Or am I being naive about how those contests actually work? Either way, I think the seller did himself a disservice by not putting "Frankenstein" in the title and then mis-spelling it in the description!

Also, I noticed these aren't in the gallery either... ;)

I've seen resin recasts of these, but I'd love a Vac formed repo.

Yes, there were resin recast a plenty a few years back.  I had one and traded it off.  Wish I hadn't.

This made me think of the coppersmith plates.  I have a resin cast of the Frankenstein Monster.  It looks like a 3-D picture of the Aurora model.  I haven't painted it yet.  I was knocking around the idea of painting it in full color and not using the copper effect.

I have all 3 in my collection.  They didn't just give out one of each, although I am not certain just how may of each were awarded, and HOW they awarded them.  Maybe each participating hobby store got a kit with the awards to give out as they saw fit?  If anyone know, it's probably Bob Morris.  Paging BOB...

Chuck,
There's a guy at Wonderfest every year that has those resin recasts for sale.

That's about it. They were local, or area, contests. Two or three people have told me that they were the first place winner in their town/region/whatever it was. And it was run by local hobby shops.

That's what I thought, because they do turn up from time to time.  I think they are usually in the 3 to 5 hundred dollar range when I see them on eBay.

Yup. It was from a boxed "contest kit" distributed by Aurora to hobby stores, in conjunction with the contest that was sponsored by Aurora and FM.

The kit consisted of the three plaques: first-second-and third, store poster, cover letter, entry blanks, and parchment "award certificates" for all the kiddies, declaring the entrant a Master Monster Maker, plus a couple of issues of FM for the store.

There was also another contest kit, made by another company but for this contest (with no Aurora involvement, but borrowing their 'elements' including the Bama Frankenstein, etc.) that was a similar "kit", but had three metal and plastic Aurora Frankenstein trophies instead of the plaques. I sold a trophy from this set on ebay a couple of months ago.

I saw that trophy...man, I wanted that one bad!  Didn't have any extra cash at the moment. :'(
I do have a resin recast of the trophy.

The contest then went national through FM, which posted photos of the "big winners" in the issue with the Kong kit destroying a train set on the cover; it was one of the weiners... if memory serves correctly.
