Cereal box recreation
« on: March 31, 2009, 05:56:10 PM »
Hiya guys!

So, we've seen the Soakie tags, Phoenix candy boxes, counter displays, etc. all recreated, looking as though they were hot off the presses (I guess because they were.) Anyway, I was wondering, has anyone tried having a cereal box reprinted? Would this be possible at, say, Kinkos? I ask because I have a vintage cereal box from when I was a kid and I'd like to display it, but it's just so old, and it was so expensive, I don't want anything happening to it, so I'd like a replica "spare" to display.

Anyone tried this, or think it's possible?

Thanks!

-Andy

Its been done for years by cereal box collectors.  They print, fold and glue and then laminate them.  I've never tried it myself, but rest assured it can and has been done.

I'm not sure if Kinko's would do it.  It's copyrighted material.  Let us know if you can do it.

??? Not really sure what happened to the words I had here. All I said was this has been done for years among cereal box collectors.  I don't know the specifics but I know it can be done.  I had a Honeycomb or Super Sugar Crisp repro once with the Monster glow heads on the back of it.  It was glued together and shrink wrapped.

i did a fast search on 'cereal box blanks' and the first site i clicked was this:

http://www.extra-mile.com/boxes/cereal.htm

it's not what you were looking for, per se, as much as showing you it's possible. you can get blank anything, from playing cards to blank boards for board games. i'd call a digital printer in your area and ask if he can do it if you provide the artwork (scanned from the original) and cereal box. these guys do amazing things, but it might not be what you'd call cheap. :) then again, i really couldn't say with accuracy. had i the printer and software, i probably wouldn't touch it for less than $35 (this field is closely related to my wife's, sharing the same conventions and all, so i don't think my estimate is *completely* out of range). were they to say $75 i wouldn't be shocked at all, but i really don't think it'd be that much unless you get a guy who's basing it completely on his time, in which case golden time might be close to $200! (that's a ridiculous scenario, though. if my wife charged people the time she's got into engraving based on the rarified $65/hr. possible, a simple three line plate would cost $25, not the couple bucks she really charges.)

anything's possible. shop around and try to keep the work in your community if you can. you can try kinko's, but i wouldn't expect much luck with them.

i also don't think you'd have a problem with trademark and/or copyright infringement. these things are certainly arguable. you *might* find a guy who won't do it, as i've heard of some folk being so fearful of some faraway company's retribution that the mere mention of something like this throws them into a panicked fit. but, back in the day, i had ten marquee-size star wars posters made from a digital printer and he didn't bat an eye. was he corrupt? did i care?

good luck. if you're having problems finding someone, let me know and i'll see what i can do for ya. hey, what can i say? i know people. that's not a guarantee, but it's the least i can do to offer a contact if you need it.

then again, you might just attach some nice scans to a blank with adhesive spray. it might look like hell, though, lol.
