Paper Mache Monster Masks!
« on: August 18, 2023, 02:25:09 PM »
These are my loose interpretations of the classic monsters using build up techniques made over the last several years. They started out as a tribute to the great Pat Newman mask sculptures for Don Post. I thought Glenn Strange’s heavily textured face would lend itself well to my paper towels soaked in house paint mache technique. It was pretty fun, so I made a couple more. I changed up the technique a bit each time, but they’re all half masks with fun fur backs, painted with washes and drybrushing. Some turned out better than others, but part of the fun is you don’t really know what you’re going to get until it’s done.

I even made a little YouTube video a few years back on how I do them: https://youtu.be/CwjBxShw4TY

Like the folks say: these are just beautiful, & I'm deeply impressed.

Ya know I looked at your very nice Youtube demo & was surprised to see that, in a way, your process is only halfway different from creating a conventional rubber mask. (No moldmaking needed!) The dense, random textural qualities that paper maché brings to the sculpt must be as unpredictable & exciting for you, as the artist, as they are for us spectators.

Speaking of rubber maskmaking, have you ever thought of doing a master positive from the sculpture/mold process so that you end up with a permanent, or semi-permanent, character prototype over which to do the paper maché buildup?

PS A paper maché Kharis (or some kinda mummy) &, outside the Pat Newman orbit, a Shock Monster, would be absolute naturals for your technique!

'Fantastic, Mr_Chicken! While scrolling through them, I thought it'd be cool to see
how it's done ... then your link turned up at the bottom. Thanks for this fun post.
Yes, do a Kharis Mummy!

Thanks all!
I'm glad to hear Kharis suggested. I think the technique is a little too dead-on for Imhotep, so I've been thinking about doing a Kharis for a more interesting interpretation.

I have thought about doing something like that in duplicating the core so that a new "skin" could be applied to make more masks. A few people have asked about getting copies of the Frankenstein in the past. I tend to leave duplication of my masks to the Trick or Treat Studios factory, because just painting them is a lot of work. But I did 3D scan that one recently to be able to offer smaller magnet versions of it.

vayapues, you reminded me I actually did a trio of Topstone characters, but as buildups on plastic skulls rather than masks:

Love those Topstones, Jasper. That's one of the very best Shockys I've ever seen (& there are a LOT of 'em)!

PS When you mention ToT Studios, I assume you're speaking loosely -- you don't have an actual association with them?

Wowzers! These are super cool, they would be right up there with the best latex masks out there today. You should be very proud for your skill in making them. Three thumbs up Mr_Chicken.

Thank you! I do indeed sculpt for Trick or Treat. Around here you'd probably recognize my Chaney Wolf Man, Werewolf of London, Christopher Lee Mummy, and upcoming Chaney Phantom "humanoid" mask, but they also carry a couple of my original designs.

Its the human mask Phantom wears.  They are in the catalog along with Red Death facemask.   I sure hope they come out.
