Moebius' MONSTER SCENES
« on: March 05, 2009, 08:25:37 AM »
Hey, guys,

I have heard in a recent issue of SCARY MONSTERS MAGAZINE that Moebius is planning to release duplicates of Aurora's old Monster Scenes snap together model kits from the late '60's/early '70.  I'm sure most of us here are familiar with the controversy surrounding those model kits that caused Aurora to drop them from the market suddenly, after attempting to salvage the kits by renaming the Victim as Dr. Deadly's Daughter (among other things; nice try, Aurora!).  Now that we have entered more jaded times it would appear that no big fuss is made over these models anymore. Though I have no interest in the Victim or Dr. Deadly (or the various torture scene kits that were issued for bolstering the character kits) I would definitely like to have the Frankenstein Monster and Vampirella kits as I am quite a fan of both. The Giant Insect also seems rather cool. It's a shame that all the controversy stopped Aurora from coming out with more such models. Does anyone here know when these kits will be available?

I am also wondering if Moebius plans on re-releasing all of the old Aurora monster model kits, specifically the ones that were previously re-released by Polar Lights. It always frustrates me when only some but not all of the kits are re-released, but I understand that there is probably a lot of red tape to go through in order to get all the kits back on the shelves. When I was little I collected several of the Aurora monster model kits during the re-issue in the early '70's with the glow in the dark parts and I have fond memories of them. I remember having Godzilla (modeled after the excellent King-Godzi suit...yes!), King Kong, the Frankenstein Monster, the Wolf Man (who didn't resemble the Lon Chaney Jr. version enough but was still cool), the Mummy, and the Creature From the Black Lagoon (one of my faves and one of Aurora's best kits!).
You guys probably wouldn't believe the reason I didn't ask my mother to purchase the Dracula kit for me...back then I was slow to become a fan of the Vampire Lord and I felt that Dracula was too human looking compared to the other monsters and therefore not scary enough. Just imagine that...Dracula, not scary or "bad" enough! I had a lot to learn back then. I didn't collect the Phantom of the Opera kit for much the same reasons despite the fact that I have heard it was one of Aurora's coolest monster kits. I avoided collecting the Forgotten Prisoner of Castle Mare' due to the lack of recognition with any movie monster and I heard that this kit didn't sell as well as the other kits at the time for much the same reason but it has since become a sleeper favorite for nostalgic fans and I would like to pick it up if possible.

I no longer have those monster kits and I would like to re-collect them in the future. Does Moebius plan on re-releasing all of them?

The Monster Scenes repops have been available for some time already.  They have not done ALL the scenes (yet) -- and there will be no Vampirella reissue (which is why I sculpted a new improved resin kit version).  MS Frankenstein is out -- and in glow plastic!

Revell has four of the monster kits coming back out soon -- though they've resculpted Dracula's head (prompting me to sculpt a new improved resin replacement version -- is there a pattern here?)

Gigantic Frankenstein is currently available (pricey -- but what the heck), as well as the Jekyll/Hyde kit. New Invisible Man and Nosferatu kits are out there to be had as well.

Most of the Polar Lights Aurora reissues are fairly easy to find -- ebay usually has a bunch listed. PL is back in the game as part of "Round 2."  See below.  Glow Aurora Witch and AMT Mr. Spock are on the way from them.

Which I just happen to see in person today, and let me tell you, it's fantastic! Highly recommended!

Speaking of Moebius - Has anyone seen pics of the new FRANKENSTEIN MONSTER model they are coming out with
later this year? It's based on the famous shot of Karloff standing in doorway - I think it's going to have a door and wall included with kit. The Moebius site only shows the classic photo.

Moebius is releasing the Ghost?  I thought the company that put out that wonderful Nosferatu was doing the ghost?

Terry, Vampirella arrived last week and she is beautiful!  She is well worth the small price that you charged!!!

I contacted Revell to find a dealer in PA that would carry the monster reissues--they gave me a dealer somewhere in Michigan.  Their rep said there won't be a resculpt of any part of the kits, but she may have been misinformed.

You're right John. It's Monarch that's putting out The Ghost, not Moebius.
