CINEFEX
« on: November 20, 2022, 10:14:09 AM »

I still have this premiere issue, published then as a tri-annual/quarterly by Don Shay.
It covers my favorite sci fi movies from 1979: "Star Trek - The Motion Picture" via an
extended interview with FX man Douglas Trumbull and Ridley Scott's "A L I E N" which
includes some amazing photographs.
Whenever some FX-laden movie was released, I'd look for it soon after in the pages of
Cinefex. As its name implies, they always featured in-depth articles on visual effects
and how they're achieved. It was in continuous (if irregular) publication right up until
last year, respected by industry professionals as much as fans.
Have you kept any back issues? Which are your favorites?

Cinefex was one of my favorite mags! Being an FX fan long before Cinefex, it was kind of a dream come true. I loved all of those BTS photos and descriptions of how the FX were done. I lost interest around #100, when everything, mostly, went digital. Photos of guys in front of computer screens just wasn't very interesting.

I was working on finding the last few missing earlier issues when I decided to sell my magazine collection.  :(

I have every issue with "Star Trek" stuff in it, and the odd issue that covered a movie I was intrigued about. Issue #1 went out-of-print quite early and the Cinefex mail order service had to start selling b/w photocopies to satisfy demand.

After a few issues, the company had to add a number of full-page ads. I used to tear them out... until the issue covering "Star Trek III", which had the first ad page attached to an article page, and vice versa. I ended up buying a replacement issue!

I was amused to discover, from the "Cinefantastique" double issue about "Star Trek II", that the guys at ILM obviously never read "Cinefex", because they talked about being mystified as to how the FX guys on "The Motion Picture" managed to shoot the surface of the Enterprise without dulling down the surface. The answer was in "Cinefex" #1 and #2.

How about Cinefantastique? When the TV shows started happening, it seemed like every other issue had a Star Trek cover!  ;D

Yep. Again, I grabbed any issue that had Trek stuff in it. The saga of the long-promised CFQ double issue featuring Star Trek - The Motion Picture was so frustrating. It kept getting delayed all through 1980 and finally cancelled. But the author, Preston Neal Jones, eventually got the intended text out as an entire book of oral histories! "Return to Tomorrow: The Filming of Star Trek - The Motion Picture" was published by Creature Features in December 2014. Although sold out, there is now an eBook file available.
