MOLE PEOPLE populate November
« on: November 11, 2022, 08:30:50 AM »

On first seeing its picture in the ad pages of Famous Monsters, I thought it must be
some kind of outer space alien with its green face and bugged eyes >

Childhood impressions (ink on paper) revealed my fascination with the character
on a purely artistic level, long before ever watching the movie >

It wasn't until getting the Warren magazine that I became informed of the monsters' inner space origins >

A copy of the Don Post mask was for sale in a shop at the Disneyland Hotel, circa 1970.
I saw it there several times and never had enough money to buy it but it looked just like
this one which joined my collection later on >

'Another of my early Mole People masks, scored with hands in February 1973 >

A year or so later, the foam master was spotted by a visitor at Post Studios toward the end of its first production run >

Unbeknownst to me, Mole People were already entrenched at haunted attractions across the country >

One still stands in its own diorama at The Witch's Dungeon. They even added mushrooms
along the cavern walls, main food source of the Mole monsters >

Dr Shocker had a nice mask/hand set on display in his semi-public House of Horrors >

There was a perfectly finished casting at Don Con, probably my all-time favorite.
I really should have a better shot of it, but alas ...

As recently as 2005, I could still stroll into our local magic shop and buy one retail.
They're long gone now and so is the shop itself >

There was another version of this character that should be mentioned
although it was never officially marketed. If you look closely at the
original monsters, it appears there were at least three different mask
styles created for the 1956 movie >

Castings of one of those alternates were circulating for a brief period in the 1980s.
I never got one and don't have much in the way of photographs. 'Still, quite a prize
amongst the mask collecting underground >

It might even have been the version on which Trick or Treat Studios based theirs.
My wife gifted me one for Christmas and they're still available from ToTS as of this season >

That brings us up to date on Mole People masks. To my knowledge, the character has
never been attempted by any independent maskmakers. It's simply not popular enough
and too complex a sculpture for most. Do you have an image of one to share? Or a comment
about the movie or merchandise? Or a recipe for stuffed mushrooms we can use this Thanksgiving?
Reply soon. You can never have enough of The Mole People around here!

I love the Mole People mask,  as well the movie!   John Agar (one of my all time favorite actors)  as well Hugh Beaumont!   I shall not  bring up my Don Post Mole People mask true horror story again; a traumatic day indeed.   The TOTS mask is fantastic!   I fancy to paint it with the non-pebbled portion of the face---the green colour  as depicted in that original Famous Monsters ad.  I would also wish to frock it  like the mask I  had my experience with back in the day, but I can find no information about how to "Frock" a latex mask, nor find  the medium itself.  I never could have imagined a modern company making a Mole Person mask--but it happened: Thank You Trick or Treat Studios!

Love those masks.

I actually have an image of Mole People masks being flocked at DPS >
