DP's "Old Vampire" casts a dark shadow
« on: October 08, 2022, 05:42:59 AM »

The creator of the "Dark Shadows" TV series didn't care one way or another
that Post Studios catalogued an unlicensed mask of Barnabas Collins in 1975 >

He may've had misgivings after the character proved a popular seller
for the remainder of the '70s and all through the '80s >

They were a common sight at shops in my area >

A department store in New York employed a costumed walkaround during the Halloween season ...
perhaps more like a "lie-about" >

I got my first edition copy in September 1975. That was one tight-fitting little mask!

Pulling it on and off took a toll on its paint so I scored a second
in October 1981, minus the blood trickle >

Some retailers had objected to it early on and ordered custom runs.

Old Vampire returned to the DPS catalog in 2001
and lasted three more years in production >

That was its last known appearance ...  not counting this thread, of course.
Get your copy into the act and reply with pics.

Always wanted one of these.  LOVED the old Barnabas makeup by Dick Smith.

I got the 2003 version of this, the hair on it is terrible  :'(

the mask next to it the Carlisle sculpted by Jordu Schell

Two or so weeks ago whilst looking for "an affordable" Don Post Old Vampire mask on ebay,
I came across a mask offered for only thirty dollars, and assuming at first glance it was the Old Vampire mask offered for an amazing price, I instinctively made purchase of it as fast as possible.  It turned out to be an old vampire,  coincidentally named Barnabus---but not "The" Old Vampire, the original iconic Don Post mask I thought it was.
Yes, when I first saw it, I simply thought it was "distressed" but after going back to ebay to look again at that which would soon be arriving in the mail---I realized it was an altogether different Don Post mask--that just happened to be named Barnabus!
I still love it however!  It is given mention and shown on the phenomenal Mask Fan Attic YouTube videos of which I have provided a link---but never know if it will work   . . .for me.

The mask turned up in Famous Monsters right?
I am sure that is where I first saw it and never made the connection to the movie--which I didn't see until later--although I probably saw the Little Big Man makeup before the Dark Shadows movie- in a book or on tv--- I believe Smith re-used the makeup sculpture he did for Dustin Hoffman when he did the Dark Shadows movie.
