Freddie Poe's Steel Blue Phantom Figure
« on: October 06, 2022, 02:37:09 PM »
I am the lucky guy that purchased Freddie Poe's "Steel Blue" Phantom Marx figure.
Freddie got the Phantom in the 80's from a guy named Peter Fritz who was a major Marx toy dealer.
Mr. Fritz bought a ton of stuff from the guys that did the clear out of the last Marx factory that closed in 1980. He told
Freddie that it was a prototype. I think he may have used the word "prototype" synonymously with "test shot".
Unfortunately Mr. Fritz passed away in 2017, so i can't contact him for information. By all accounts he was a stand up
guy who would gladly provide collectors with accurate information. I did contact Rusty Kerns of Playset magazine and
he and two other Marx experts reviewed my photos and came to a consensus that it is either a test shot or a variation
in color. When held in hand next to an original teal figure there is a distinct difference that doesn't appear to be just
a variation in the shade of blue. All of my teal figures look exactly the same and i have never seen one that looked
different in shade. Do any of you guys have shade variation in your teal figures?
I am honored to own a piece of Freddie's awesome collection!!

Congratulations on winning this amazing piece and although I don't have any extra information about it for you, it does look to be a much sharper sculpt than your teal one, which would leave me to believe that it's some kind of test shot or very early release.

Very nice,

Ian

Thanks Ian!!
I think it is most likely a test shot. You are right, it looks much more defined than any others i have seen.

Given how much it would cost to cast such a piece, I can't see how it could have been anything else but a prototype for the Marx Phantom figure. For anyone else to have done it would have been cost prohibitive.

So you arent goung to address how he claims to have had it since he was a kid AND purchased from a marx employee in the 80s???

If that was a prototyoe or test shot it would have gotten more than 1 bid and sold for much more than $99.    That should tell you all you need to know.

Esp when people only a month or so back were fighting over a 60s teal.   An extreme example, but you'd think something as rare as a "test shot" would have gotten similar attention.
From my experience I sure think it would have.

No. Why should I? What I "know" about the figure was that it's been in Freddie's collection for years, Plastic Nebula bought it upon the premise that it came from a Marx employee in the 1980's and that Plastic Nebula is now delighted to have the figure residing in his collection. Yet somehow you find Nebula's delight unsettling.

It tells me that scepticism exists. But that's something I already know.

Where?

Well then since you keep demanding that I explain things to which I'm not a party, explain how someone other than Marx could/would have financed the production of such a figure? Are you suggesting that another company, e.g. Kenner, Mattel, MPC, did it just out of spite to show Marx just how much better they could do it and then presented the thing to Louis Marx as a Xmas gift for a joke?

I figured you were his spokeman with all the "FP collection" this and "FP collection" that so I just assumed you were privy to information.

Where???

Did you not see the screenshot I posted?    24 bids ending at $194???

Yeah...Im suggesting Hasbro did it....Now you're getting ridiculous.
Im suggesting since the story  chasnges  it along with the popsicle blues came from the same facilities as other mexican repops when the molds were still nice.    And the reason you dont see a bunch is because the repops are produced in small batches.  Not hundreds  at a time like Marx most likely would.

Same reason you dont see a random blue or yellow figure in a bag of plastic green army men.    Or a yellow Auroa Frank.

No, I find a longtime collector possibly passing something off as something its not to a fellow cillector unsettling.

That all started because I was doing a new member with a very impressive collection a favour by helping him post images. Then when Freddie disappeared from this board for a couple of years, I wondered why and dusted out his email. So he started sending me more images in case I wanted to post them. Since I like vintage monster stuff and like to contribute to keep this board active, I did.

The steel blue Phantom figure has features that are way too sharp to have originated from the Marx production mold. That's why I believe it has to be a pre-production prototype.

When I primed my cream colored repops they appeared to have more detail also because of the lack of transparency and shine.
