Try to remember MAD DOCTOR September

Of all Mad Doctors that could've become DP masks, why Dr Niemann
and why is he painted red? I've never gotten a satisfactory answer
from anyone so let's just roll with it and celebrate the realism and
creepiness of our Calendar character for Terrorsday the first >



I doubt they were in production for more than a year or so back in the mid 1960s >



Although intended for adult use as were all the original Calendar masks, it was sculpted
barely large enough for a skinny teenager to wear.

     

It was soon replaced by bigger more wearable versions which appeared in DP catalogs
all through the 1970s and early '80s. We'll get to them later this month.

As the DP/Universal reissues were being developed in 1998, there was no question that
the Calendar Mad Doctor be scanned/resized/reworked before joining the series.



     

Has anybody ever worn one of those thickly cast edition copies? I thought about trying
for a portrait but chickened out and used eye inserts instead >

Awesome post! I, for one, would love an Atwill make but I doubt if it would be as creepy. Maybe as Atwill from Mystery of the Wax Museum.

Was Universal concerned about Colin Clive having heirs they weren't aware of back then, or did they even care about such things, before Bela Jr. started challenging their use of his father's image? Clive would have made for a more iconic doctor, with his unique features and his overlapping, oily hair. But Neimann is pretty scary, and it's Karloff!

I have to say the image you took of the reissue looks more like Boris than I've ever seen this mask look before.
