Obscure Captain Company items
« on: July 08, 2022, 10:33:50 PM »
Hi, just wondering, looking through issue # 28 FM,  on page 90 in the advertisements, does anyone own or does anybody know of someone who has that Frankenstein key chain?  Any thoughts on other obscure items sold through Captain Company?

Mike, thanks for posting a pic of the ad.  For the longest time I've been thinking about that key chain wondering if one would ever pop up on e-bay or one being found elsewhere.  Many items were sold through Captain Company, with some of them being really "out there",  such as those genuine Air Force parachutes or those 30 foot Air Force balloons, or even the "live monkeys"!!  I believe ads for these and others were seen in comic books too. Some things such as the "Magnajector" which would project large images from photos even though sold through Captain Company are considered generic and really weren't "exclusives" like other pieces. Even though a long while back I posted about seeing a Frankenstein speaker in a display window in Philadelphia back in the mid sixties, I never went inside to see if it was actually being sold there or perhaps if it was bought through Captain Company which was once located there and just used it for the window display at the time.  It was a type of variety store and as you know the more visually dynamic the display window was,  the better chance of customers entering the store. I think that keychain may have been an "exclusive" FM piece along with maybe a few other items maybe.

It does say "Created and styled exclusively for FM".

It's like the "Elgar" buttons. Nobody can seem to find any other products (including buttons) made by Elgar. The small ones were (also?) sold in vending machines, but the big ones were only sold through Warren mags.

If the ad only appeared a few times or less, and no examples in collections there is a chsnce they were never produced.   The example in the ad could be a OOAK piece created by a jeweler.

If I remember correctly (something happening less regularly), they had those in their ads for quite a few years.

Mike, you're correct.  It was advertised for a while.

Monsters For Sale (Adam) knows Frankenstein stuff and he said he's never seen one.

Here from Freddie Poe's collection are three obscure Captain Company items that were advertised somewhere within the first twenty issues of Famous Monsters of Filmland:

Human Skeleton

Skull Mug

Horror Decals
