Monsterpalooza 2022 ~ back with pics!

It was great to see long lines of fans at the huge convention center, welcoming
Monsterpalooza back to Pasadena after two years of cancellations. On entering
I immediately jumped in line for the walkthrough Monster Museum, knowing the
wait time would've been an hour or more if I'd delayed >



Full-size figures by Casey Wong were standing just inside the entrance. He also
had some mask creations on display in the Dealers Room which we'll get to later >



Screen-used costumes, created by Greg Cannom for "Van Helsing" and "Bram Stoker's Dracula",
were on loan courtesy of the "Icons of Darkness" exhibit in Hollywood >



This YODA puppet was recreated from original elements by Gino Sabatino Design.
They would periodically demonstrate its range of movement to astonished visitors. How
do you suppose they got all those mechanics into that tiny head?



These two big Godzilla figures were hard to see ... and their tags even harder.
One read "Takumicho's Jumbo 2016 Shin-Godzilla". The other: "Kaiyodo Jumbo
1989 Godzilla vs Biollante" >

I couldn't quite figure out the concept behind Chris Thomes' "Monster Peep Show", described
as "shadowbox dioramas suggesting dark ride scenes". I thought of CftBL fan Mike Scott
on seeing that scaly arm reaching through the porthole >

 'Saved the best for last: you won't even believe your eyes!



It may look like a tabletop scene from our years as monster kids but that Aurora FRANKENSTEIN statue
is nearly seven feet tall! The folks at Foamfabber had an unpainted kit digitally scanned and "printed",
then cast the foam scan to create this fiberglass replica. Trick or Treat Studios sculptor Jasper Anderson
also worked on it >



I took even more pics in the Dealers Room which I'll get to posting a little later. Until then,

I spent most of my time in the Dealers Room, looking at scary stuff, visiting with friends
and taking pictures. You'll notice lots of monster mask coverage in the images to follow.
As my name implies, I just naturally gravitate towards them. So let's venture inside ...
if we can get past this scary sentinel at the gateway >



Some of the vendor names can be difficult to make out. I'll try to translate as necessary
and as memory permits. This split-face Frankenstein wall mount is the work of
Shane Stover Arts >



The Immortal Masks company had up their usual wall of wearable silicone masterworks >



One can detect a strong "Shock Monster" influence in this foursome of theirs >



Lord Grimley's Manor also offered an extensive selection, with a few Trick or Treat
masks scattered throughout >



I had a nice chat with Mr Drake about this Gillman mask at his table. I only wish
my shot of it turned out better >



Graven Imaginings specializes in bronze art pieces. Vincent Di Fate contributed his
sculptural talent towards this replica of the Metaluna Mutant >



Their Phantom bronze was a collaboration between Jeff Yagher and John Ulakovic >



I was lucky to grab a shot of this Skeksis at the Berzerker FX table.
It sold within minutes of show's opening >



That big tentacle is creepy cool, created as part of a giant octopus for an episode of
TV's "Baywatch". Michael Burnett FX wanted $495 ... I considered it ...



Midwesterner Aaron Lewis brought in some masks and sold most of them before show's end >



"World of Verne Langdon" is always a welcome presence at this convention, assuring that
a founding father of the '60s monster craze shall live on through his artistry. Those jackets
on the right are their latest product and sold well all weekend >



Justin Mabry was busy shuttling back and forth from the Trick of Treat Studios booth
to his own table nearby. I moved in for a closeup on his Red Moon Zombie mask,
a David Hartman design, not long before someone bought it >

       

Dingy Dave's table was quite an eye-catcher >



'Some mask work by Casey Wong who also provided an exhibit for the Museum.
I never found out if these masks were for sale or not >

       

I was quite taken with this piece by Dug Stanat. Called "The Boatman", it measures
over three feet tall and took him months to complete >

'The mask selection at Haunted Harvest Novelties. Their Frankenstein reminds me
of a walkaround at Universal Studios Tour >



The staff at "MonsterMan 37" may soon be changing their name to just "37", I forgot why.
I did get a closeup of that Wolfman mask on the left, good likeness >

     

I was disappointed that this exposure failed. They're the company
which developed the giant Aurora Frankenstein >



Who knew you could form such things out of hemp?



There were only two DPS/Universal reissues for sale on the entire floor,
a Frankenstein and a Phantom, both at Dimensional Designs' table.
They also had the "Calendar Masks" ad kit by Terry Prince >

     

Monsterpalooza is the most mask-friendly of any convention I've ever attended ...
and the masks themselves are all outstanding >

     

     

If I could've left the show with but a single high-end piece, it would
definitely be one of these " A L I E N " heads, adapted using 1979
originals by Tim Martin, an instructor at Stan Winston's makeup school >



That's it for my coverage. There are now plenty of videos up on youtube featuring
all the imagery my humble lens failed to capture. Don't let that dissuade you from
adding your own Monsterpalooza pics to this thread. Dates for the autumn show

There is some video on YouTube of the Aurora Frankenstein's monster. He looks so rad.
