Billiken Fan Club, members unite!
« on: November 29, 2020, 11:02:12 AM »

I'll never forget my very first look at a Billiken model figure. The year was 1982 and
I was a guest in the home of a well-connected fellow collector who had an early copy
of the Metaluna Mutant.

There was only one shop in my area through which Billiken models could be ordered from Japan
so I endeavored to assemble a complete collection.

I never did find them all but have nearly a dozen built and finished today plus an equal number unbuilt and boxed >

Later in the decade, fliers began flying around for the Fan Club >

I don't know what's become of my T-shirt and membership button but still have
everything else they sent me for joining >

Those Billiken bucks were just too cool to spend >

I only found one issue of their newsletter in my archive. Did they ever publish another?

If you were a member of the Billiken Fan Club, do address my query. If not just reply with pics
of your Billiken model figures, thanks.

Try searching "Billiken-Shokai" and see what comes up.
Back in the '80s when I was actively collecting model figures, I actually phoned company headquarters in Japan.
The guy who answered spoke English but as soon as I asked about movie monster models, they transferred me
to someone who spoke no English. I hung up on them in frustration. They probably thought I was an attorney
or something.

Billiken produced some of the greatest model kits.

I still consider Billiken Frankenstein to be one of the greatest sculpts of the Karloff Monster ever produced.  It remains, along with The Phantom of the Opera and a few others, the epitome of a great model kit.

I still have my Billiken Franky. He goes nicely with my Horizon Franky. They are both great likenesses.
