COVID-19 no politics this time...promise
« on: March 16, 2020, 02:10:26 PM »
I got the last one shut down, and for that I apologize. It's important to keep the conversation (and ourselves) alive. Let's try this again, no politics).

All schools, restaurants, bars, theaters, entertainment industries are closed.  Guidance from the state said no gatherings over 50.  Fed says 10.  I'm sure we will update, if not have a curfew soon.

Even strip clubs are closed, which is horrifying in itself.

It's frightening. Where I was worried that the dozens infected in New Rochelle just north of New York City would quickly become several hundred in the state within a week, the current count of 950 is way beyond what I feared. I was expecting cases in Florida to mushroom from under ten and they now stand at 137, but I was stunned to see cases in Louisiana jump from a couple just over a week ago to 114 right now. Even states such as Michigan and Ohio where there were zero cases less than a week ago now have 53 and 50 cases respectively.

And I thought Italy's total was shockingly high when it got to over 5000 just over a week ago on March 7th. Well the case count in Italy has now jumped by over 7087 in the last two days alone and hospitals can't even cope with the critical! Evidently when the first case was encountered in Italy on February 17th, the young fellow wasn't taken seriously and was repeatedly dismissed from the hospital as opposed to being put in isolation. They somehow didn't think a disease erupting in "far off" China could appear in Italy....

Here's where I'm getting my numbers:

Worldwide Infections - Worldometers

U.S. Infections - NY Times

People now need to change their everyday behaviour. It's gone past avoiding planes. We're now getting full-fledged community transmission.

The customers were complaining about having to get their lap dances from six feet away.

Never understood lap dances, myself.  Seems to make as much sense as a starving man rolling around in a seven-course meal he is not allowed to consume.

I’m guessing 2020's school year is over.  No prom, no nothin'.

I feel sorry for the two girls I babysit 3 times a week.  One is 5 and the other turns 12 in a couple days.  (Kindergarten and 6th grade.)

The little one loves school and her teacher SO much.  She is already crying.  When it sinks in that she won't get to have a whole first year, she will be truly crushed.

This is also the year the older one's class was supposed to go to summer camp and she was all excited about that.  She got a Polaroid-style camera for her birthday and now she can’t go anywhere to take pictures and have all the memories the older people in her life have been telling her about.

They are both so disappointed.

This may seem like small potatoes in the grand scheme of things to most of us, but this is big stuff in their little lives.  I hope they don't get sick on top of everything else.  (The 6th grader has asthma and has always been a little fragile.)

Life expectancy for men is 76.  I'm already 73.  I wouldn't be any great loss.  (Don't understand how I made it this far.)  But, man I want to keep these kids safe.

All the more frustrating to know there is no treatment for the disease - just the symptoms.  That leaves us with two choices:  avoid getting it - or, avoiding giving what you have to anyone else, while you wait to see if your body is strong enough to fight it off.

Good luck, everybody.

(Time for me to go spread sunshine among the other people who's lives I touch.)

Yep.  The one she got has "Intel" on the side.  It spits out, thick, wallet-sized prints that slowly develop before your eyes.

Evidently the cameras are like buying home printers.  They are really cheap, but the film is really expensive - like a dollar a snap.

Not a practical gift for an 11-year-old with no job.  I'm sure it will wind up collecting dust on a closet shelf just like the bulky old Polaroid-Land cameras of Christmases past.

I watched The Last Man on Earth, I Am Legend and Outbreak last week just to get me mentally ready for the oncoming Apocalypse.  Anyone trying to come after my monster collection needs to simply know, "I'll give you my monsters when you pry them from my cold, dead hands."

I’ve been thinking about how reality plays out so differently from science fiction.

I love sci-fi movies with deserted cities caused by nuclear disasters or major plagues that wipe out everyone but an overpaid star, acting distraught over being left alone - with nary a rotting corpse to befoul his private air supply.

I like to imagine myself being the last guy and not being all that upset by the prospect of not having to share the world with anyone else.  I mean, I would be met with a world of plenty.  Store shelves would be stocked to bursting with all good things for my sole pleasure.

With no other human to fear, I could move into any house I wanted and decorate it with the whole world’s pickings - including any museum pieces that struck my fancy.

In reality, the still in-place and operating government has ordered all its own citizens to abandoned all public places and imprison themselves in their own homes.  They have complied.

And  just the anticipation of an impending plague has caused physically contentious Black Friday-type shopping frenzies that have stripped all the stores of toilet paper and SPAM.

So my reality is that, should I risk arrest by sneaking out, I would not be able to move about without suspicious eyes of well-armed denizens peering out from behind the drapes and blinds of nearly every window.  And helping myself to things I can’t afford from unattended shops would probably get me shot for looting.

I liked the fiction version better.

One positive thing:  I haven't heard anything about Kim & Kanye in some time.

They are closing down the big 3 Detroit auto makers.

Any time Americans agree to stop making money it MUST be serious.

I'm feelin' kinda guilty.  I'm retired and I never go anywhere, anyway.  I'm not feeling this personally at all.  My freezer is stocked, I have rice, beans, pasta and plenty of canned goods for several months.  Our tap water is just fine, etc.

How are you guys doing?  Anyone here laid off, missing classes, whatever?  Having difficulty finding anything you really NEED in the stores?
