Comic Reader By Day, Werewolf By Night
« on: October 27, 2019, 10:50:43 AM »
Each Halloween I try to dig out and reread some monster themed comics. I like a little bit of everything, from the Dark Horse Universal Monster series to the 1950’s Bugs Bunny Halloween specials. This year I’m immersed in the Marvel Comics  interpretations of Frankenstein, Dracula and Werewolf. I’m particularly taken with Mike Ploog’s artwork on several of these comics. The first few Frankenstein issues were really well crafted and I’m having fun rereading the early Werewolf By Night issues. There’s a plethora of comics to choose from in this genre. I’d be curious to know what other UM members think of Marvel’s take on the monsters? How about other fun Halloween related comics in general?

Ps- I really enjoyed when my alter ego met Frankenstein back in the 50’s. I wish the western version had lasted long enough in the 60’s and 70’s to meet the other Marvel monsters.

Werewolf by Night was one of my favorites as a kid, especially because of Mike Ploog's art. Werewolf and Terror on the Planet of the Apes.

I've recently made my way through these, as well:

I enjoyed Ploog’s “Ape” work too. What are your thoughts  on the Mummy, It, or Manphibian?

I thought The Mummy started strong, but ended up more of a supporting character in his own book. And the ending just sort of petered out. Pretty much the same with It, although much faster. Manphibian was pretty much just a one shot, but it seemed to have potential. As a kid, I really likes Son of Satan. His Hellstorm reboot in the 90's didn't do much for me, though. Brother Voodoo was another character that I liked, but didn't follow.  Reading the stories today, I think there was some uncertainty as to what to do with the character, leading to some similarities with Dr. Strange. I hadn't read anything with Gabriel, the Devil Hunter until recently. That was interesting and suitably spooky. I would like to have had more. I think there was a lot of potential there.

I’m with you on the 90’s reiteration of SOS, I felt the same way about WWBN and MT. I was glad to see them try something new with the characters, but wasn’t very fond of the material. Brother Voodoo had a creepy feel to it but your right about the Dr. Strange similarities. I though Manphibian was probably better done as the creature the FF fought in their series; a tie in between the two might have been cool. I’d forgotten about Gabriel; I’ll have to reread some of those stories too. I think my favorite Halloween read this year was the early Manthing stuff, especially the clown ghost story in #5.  At any rate it’s fun to see this material after way too many years.

Great thread guys! I'm a huge Marvel Horror guy. In terms of Werewolf by Night I'm only missing #32. Not sure if I'll ever be able to afford a copy I'm afraid. Same with Tomb of Dracula. I only need like 8 or 9 issues to complete set, but one issue is #10. E molto caro. I do have complete sets of all the Son of Satan, Man-Thing, Morbius, Frankenstein, Man-Wolf, Living Mummy, and Godzilla books. Still need quite a few Ghost Riders.

I’m looking for a WWBN 32 also. Same with TOD 10. I had these books as a kid, but sold them years ago. At the time I never imagined they’d become so expensive today ( not the sharpest tool in the shed I guess-lol). What’s  your take on Man-Wolf? I liked his introductory appearances in Spider-Man, but was a little iffy on his solo series.

I really liked the look of Man-Wolf. I think he was the first wolf-like werewolf I ever recall seeing. The white fur was another unique trait, and the gem that made him transform was an interesting idea. I enjoyed him as a Spidey villain, but I don't remember ever reading any of his solo stories.  Morbius, the living vampire was another great Spider-Man antagonist that didn't always work well on his own. And as with Hellstorm, I didn't get into the Morbius re-boot.

I'd be happy to see movie versions of any of these characters, although I'd trust Marvel more than Sony (who have the rights to Morbius and I'd assume Man-Wolf) to deliver them.

Yeah I liked Man-Wolf's solo issues. But it was only like 7 or 8 issues I think. Part of an anthology series if i recall. Yes, his spider-man appearances are better, I agree. I collected most of the 90s horror re-boot titles: Hellstorm, Doctor Strange, Ghost Rider, Morbius, Blade, Nightstalkers, Midnight Sons etc.

If you are a fan of these 1970’s Marvel Monster titles, you would also enjoy the versions with 45 records with those comic books that were also made. They were reprints of previously released comics, but with a read-along record to enhance the experience!

 :)

I remember those!
There are quite a few online videos of those Power Records online; some that just have the cover image, while others show the comic panels, as well.

I remember having the Spidey Power Record at one time; I’ll have to open the crypt and see if it’s still around? How about the “rock comic” that came with the large Romita poster? I’ve got the comic reprints from Spidey 1 and Journey Into Mystery 83, but never owned or heard the records. I think my favorite vintage comic record is the plastic one that came with the Marvel MMMS club kit. Hearing Stan, Flo and the gang clown around was cool.
