I've heard a lot of rumors about GI Joe.  They keep making the 12 inch guy and "historic" figures keep coming out to replicate the classic days and with Barbie turning 50 GI Joe might not yet be ready for retirement.

AS for Captain action, the latest rumor I've heard was that he was being resculpted to come out MEGO sized.  The Captain Action comic book is barely hanging on though so it's anybodies guess.
The idea is that we have to show the toy makers that we are insterested and we are serious.  I've been running a campaign for years to get PEZ to remake the Universal Monster series but all they did was the 12 inch Frankenstein and, although I bought 5 of them, the support was not there and the figure has been remaindered.

The only revival that really worked was Aurora and the 12-inch GI Joe.  And with Joe, it wasn't so much a reissue of a toy line as a reintroduction of a format.  GI Joe was already around in a smaller size.

I think the vintage Bullmarks could really help the cause. If there were straight re-issues, they would appeal to both nostalgic monster fans and Japanese toy collectors, as long as word got out (and I'd see to that!). I'm not sure how many fans realize the connection between the original US releases and the Bullmarks. For example, I know I've seen those Bullmarks before either at auction or in people's collections, but since the original 60s line was before my time and I wasn't too familiar with them, I didn't realize their origins. I thought they were Japanese toys! (And since many Japanese toy collectors are my age and younger, I suspect I'm not the only one.)  And because retro style toys are probably a bigger success in Japan than here, I think it would help a lot to market them there, as well as here.

Or I could be totally wrong.

As far as Caption Action, the company doing the reboot of that did release quite a bit, was bought out, and that company closed the door on almost everything they bought up. Cap has gone on however to spawn a collectable statue, new Mego sized Cap figures, and even a new model kit. I STILL wish they released the Johnny Quest things they showed before the rebooted 12" line was cancelled.

Yep.. He-Man respawned quite a few lines, and also has a current web only new line available as well as a new movie in the works now.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles rebooted, and have been around for about 4 or 5 years now with the newer releases, a new animated series, and a dvd only cgi movie (that was actually pretty good!)

The smaller gi-joe line rebooted, is going strong, and will of course be carried on through the new Gi-Joe movie as well.

Same with Transformers.. they rebooted, spawned a new featuyre film, then a new animated series, and now a sequel to the feature film.

Even kiddie things like My Little Pony rebooted, and cabbage patch kids rebooted.. Beanie Babies are also now making a comeback, as are pet rocks.

Frankly, I'm surprised Major Matt Mason, the Zeriods, and the Outer Space Aliens haven't already been milked a few times over.

I don't think the US audience would be willing to pay for the Bullmark reissues.  Most ppl in the US don't have the nostalgia for cheap vinyl toys that the Japanese marked has.  I don't think US collectors would be willing to pay $80.00 for a Japan made vinyl toy.

With that said, I'd be willing to buy a reissue set of Bullmark vinyls... I just don't think many others would. :(

Hello everyone, this is Gary Schaeffer the owner of the Outer Space Men LLC. I may have met many of you at the con however if you were not there than I want to offer my salutations as well as my many thanks for all of this talk that you all are engaged in about my figures, my booth and my new graphic novel.

Let me say to you all that the OSM have been for me a 7 year labor of love first getting all of the registrations as well as then getting my creative team together from around the world to produce this book which has been highly acclaimed to date. Everyone of the comic stores that ordered the book nationwide is sold out and I hope to be doing a second order through Diamond any day now. If you have not read the book yet, you can get it on my official OSM site: www.theouterspacemen.com. While you are there you can also see the new wild Tee Shirt!

It has taken me several days to register on this website so I apologize as I wanted to strike while the iron was hot when Mel Birnkrant (the creator of the OSM) sent me the link to the postings about the con and the return of the OSM. Now that I am successfully on line I hope to answer any questions that you may have about the return of the OSM and to be a part of any discussion that you would like to have in regards to the site, the book.

You can also email me at the site: theouterspacemen(*at*)theouterspacemen.com

Here are some fantastic links to the reviews on the new book, the booth at the con and a ton more. Enjoy reading and I hope to be hearing from you all and see you on the site. Thanks so much, Gary B Schaeffer.

Is there any hope of a rerelease of the original figures and related toys?

Gary, thanks for checking in. It was great meeting you at the con.

In answer to the poll... both! Although if I had to choose just one, I'd probably say the Bullmarks. They're more in keeping with my existing collection. But if I could afford to get both, I'm sure I would.

Are you going to reissue the original figures or produce newly designed versions?  Speaking as a potential customer for your product, I think the appeal of the Outer Space Men lies in the original sculpts, not the general characters concepts.  I would not be interested in buying new sculpts.
In fact, I wish the cards would incorporate the original art.  Those 60s photos conveyed a certain attitude that added to the toy line's personality.

If the new line were successful, I could see it eventually expanding with new designs and new characters.  But the initial offering should be straight reissues of the original toys, with the original sculpts and paint schemes, and packaging that is as faithful as possible to the atmosphere of the original art.  That is what the fans have been waiting for.  A "do over" for the original Space Men.  But this time there won't be a strike, the inventory won't get stuck in transit and the second series will come out after all.

I'm of two minds on it.. I'd like to see new additions to the line, as well as the originals.

If these are intended for mass market, I wouldn't mind seeing the old figures mixed in with new figures in a few wave releases, so they could actually go to mass markets, and collectors as well would be satisfied.

I'm an opener, so beyond scanning the artwork, these guys will be torn open, JUST like my originals and played with.

It kinda depends on how these are marketed. Maybe a CGI cartoon series could be spun off the license, and instead of just a reissue for collectors, these guys scould also go into monster kid's hands as well.

If Monsters Vs Aliens does well at the box office, these could be poised perfectly for a major new license.

Mr. Schaeffer, welcome to the group.  We have a traveling museum-style exhibit called the UMA Toy Display.  It goes to different conventions like Wonderfest, Monster Bash and Archon.  We also refer to it as the "toy tour," because the toys tour around the country.  The display changes every year, but it always includes rare vintage monster toys from the 60s, 70s and 80s.  The toys are on loan from UMA members.  Last year, we had a window with the Outer Space Men:

These were on loan from the collection of Dan Roebuck, except for Colossus Rex and his backer card, which were mine.

Mr. Schaeffer – can I call you Gary? – now that you have enlisted in our army, we would love for you to participate in the 2008 UMA Toy Display!  Imagine your 1st and 2nd series Colorforms Outer Space Men in one of the windows, accompanied by a placard explaining who you are and what you are doing to reintroduce the characters.  It's not as glamorous as the NY Comic Con, but it is not chopped liver.  Wonderfest draws a sizable crowd.  Many hundreds of future customers could be gawking at those aliens, thinking how cool it would be to own something like them in the near future.

Here is another thread with pictures of the UMA Toy Display from Wonderfest '07 and '08.
