I've always regarded the monster from this movie as one of
the scariest-looking faces of the 1950s >

As a kid I often confused it with the monster from "War of the Colossal Beast"
even though both are seen clearly and frequently in their respective movies.
Any remaining confusion vanished forever once independent artists began
creating masks of the characters. There's no better way to get familiar with
a monster than while it's right in your face! Come October 1994 I scored my
first CYCLOPS mask, created by one of the fine sculptors at Alvarez Wax Models >

I wore it to a few masquerades and it stood unchallenged in my collection
for twelve years until VXXFX unleashed their version. Upon getting one, I
resolved never to wear it but keep it on prominent display in pristine condition
at all times ... and so it remains to this day >

This brings us to the ultimate CYCLOPS mask: Don Post's version
which debuted in their 1976 catalog >

I actually have a shot of prototypes taken at Post Studios' R & D lab from around that time.
You'll only see it here, fellow collectors >

My first edition copy appears on film for the first time, January 1976 >

DPS added hair to their edition, reportedly to avert copyright challenges
from the producers of "7th Voyage" >

The character remained in production for another year then vanished, later to be
reissued as a resized version in 1986 >

I never got one until long after it was re-reissued for the 2000 Retro Line. Oddly enough,
that catalog page was not included at "The Blood-Curdling Blog of Monster Masks" where
I do much of my research. I've reproduced it here for you >

The prototype looked awesome, seen here at DPS in October 1999 >

My copy is custom finished, hairless like the movie original, and remains with me to this day.
Who says I don't have an eye for great masks?  >:(

Long-time readers of Famous Monsters magazine have got to remember seeing this
horrific deathshead in its pages. If memory serves, one early issue features a pictorial
of its creation from start to finish. I always thought it would make a terror-ific mask
but the few attempts I've seen over the years came up lacking. That was before
Death Studios released their version in the late 1990s >

The exact year must've been '99 since I scored my first edition copy that September.
I found a pair of matching hands and wore it to one wild masquerade party, vowing
afterwards to preserve it for display purposes exclusively. Today, it remains one
of the scariest masks I've ever owned >

^ Here's a new score from earlier this month. I don't know much about its history
since someone else owned it before me but it's a great likeness of Imhotep
created by Daniel Horne, polyfoam-filled and autographed on the inside. I only
own one other mask by him and really should have more. It was a sad day for
collectors when he retired from mask making some years ago.

Nice! It looks like a legit death mask.

(No pun intended. It's a seriously good sculpt.)

A studio like that could inspire any well-rounded monsterkid to greatness. How do you keep those
vintage Topstones in shape? I'd expect them to be falling to pieces by now. Thanks for the tour.

Yes, I spend most of my time in there!
Don't do much with the Topstones, other than keeping them out of direct sunlight. I know some people keep their masks packed away in darkness, but for me, I feel that life is short and I would rather be surrounded by the things that I love while I'm here.  :)
