The Last non-Monster movie you have watched?

Not long ago I watched the made-for-TV western Lonesome Dove, 1989.

In the last 3 days I watched Open Range, 2003 and made-for-TV Broken Trail, 2006.

I didn't set out to watch them in chronological order, it's just how it turned out.  You'd think all that horsey drama would have sated my hunger for westerns, but they did the opposite.  Good movies in any genre have the effect of stimulating a desire for more of the same.  I wish there were more quality westerns from recent years - particularly the sort that that take place over an extended period of time and over vast areas of the unspoiled America of the late 1800's.  It was an interesting period in our history.

All of these films have great casts.  But one major attraction that ties all three of these movies together for me is Robert Duval.  Damned fine actor, and one of those inexplicable people to whom your eyes naturally gravitate whenever they appear on the screen.  I know he is older and westerns must be grueling to make.  But, oh I hope he manages to give us one more western-themed movie like these. 

Not many actors could hold sway over such a project against the CGI-super-heroes-are-sure-money crowd that keep creativity clenched tightly in their money grubbing talons.

I know, I do tend to go on - sorry.

Neither of these are recent, but my two favorite westerns that fill that description are HOW THE WEST WAS WON (1964 theatrical) and CENTENNIAL (1978 TV mini). Love that whole epic sweep thing!

A little dry, perhaps, but worth the slog.

I'm feeling the need to re-watch this.

What IS it about Holmes and Watson that lends them so readily to re-telling, adaption to other settings and parody?  (Not that their haven't been the occasional stinkers.)

All come with special features and extras in a nice boxed set. I paid $50 for mine because it came with collectible mini samurai sword and display stand. If you don't care about that, you can find them for as low as $35. The bluray transfers are excellent, too. I just had to buy The Hateful 8 ($3 used) and am waiting for the exceptional Once Upon a Time in Hollywood...and I have a complete set.
