Glenn Strange Frankenstein / Madmen FX 'Strange Monster'
« on: July 03, 2012, 12:23:09 PM »

For those people lucky enough to get a copy of Madmen FX’s ‘Strange Monster,’ there was a very nice surprise lurking underneath the modern, slasher-style  finishing – a very nice Glenn Strange Frankenstein likeness!

About a year ago, I found a pristine copy of this mask on eBay and bought it immediately.
With a production date of 2010 on the neck, and what appears to be some very high-grade latex, I can only imagine the limited number of these masks in existence is probably due to the crack-down on non-licensed masks by the Universal Lawyers around this time.  At the time I purchased this mask off ebay, Madmen FX was only making a ‘Freddie’ mask and one or two other slasher-type pieces along the same lines.

At one time they apparently also produced a very nice, ‘Cheney-style Wolfman.’  However, at the time of this posting, I haven’t been able to find anything more on the company.  Perhaps you’ll have better luck searching.

Admittedly, I thought the original finishing on this piece looked kinda cool, but knowing what it could look like pushed me over the edge, and I decided that as different and unique as it looked with its modern paint scheme and red hair, the traditional Glenn Strange Frankenstein look was what I wanted for this piece.

Before refinishing:

After letting is sit in my collection for about a year, I finally got around to giving it a proper GS Frank paint-job.  For hair, Dante Renta provided his usual off-the-hook, best-in-the-world, Glenn Strange Frankenstein hair-job!  As you can see, the likeness is unmistakable, and the fact that the mask is wearable makes is an added treat.

As far as I know, Madmen FX no long produces these, but if anyone can make contact with them, perhaps they can change their mind.

After refinishing:

Congrat's, you took something that looked kinda cool and made it into a terrific likeness of a GS Frank. Thank's for posting this, never saw that mask before by Madmen FX.

You improved it 1000%! That original paint job was probably just an attempt to not get sued. That sculpt was too good, though, to allow that awful paint job to remain. You (and Dante) elevated it to art!

Your customization of this item truly made it pop.

What was a very interesting mask is now a living monster.

Conratulations!

I love all things Frankenstein. I wish tots would get the license for the universal studios monsters. I recently got into mask collecting and have been lucky to find a couple of savage eye pieces. Both were his coming out of retirement sculpts I guess.  One looks kinda retro from the 60s 70s and the other looks like the most amazing classic karloff I have ever seen. Absolutely stunning!

I was lucky enough to score a copy of this Madmen FX "Strange Monster" mask thanks to fellow collector and friend Makahuna who's talents in the mask collecting community are well known. He re-haired, foam filled and inserted acrylic eyes in this bad boy and I'm thrilled to add him to my collection. He looks absolutely terrorific!! Pics by Maskahuna. Thanks for looking.
