Netflix's "The Haunting of Hill House"
« on: October 23, 2018, 09:37:21 PM »
I just finished the show yesterday. Superbly written, creepy, disturbing. I loved every minute of it, even though it diverged wildly from the source material. Has anyone else here seen it yet? Thoughts? What do you think they could do for a season 2, assuming that happens?

I'm on episode 8. So far so good but episode 2 was a little rough after losing my wife last x-mas. This ceratinly is not what I expected. Not as creepy as hoped. I'm also watching the mini show Haunted on NetFlix. Good stories but I'm thinking if ALL this horrible stuff going on including murder, why didn't you contact somebody?

I finished The Haunting of Hill House earlier this week. I really liked it a lot. I don't know why, but the first few episodes of that creeped me out far more than most horror movies/shows I've seen before.

I'm also watching the mini show Haunted on NetFlix. Good stories but I'm thinking if ALL this horrible stuff going on including murder, why didn't you contact somebody?

I tried to watch that but just couldn't get into it. I think you're referring to the second episode. I have a pretty open mind about these things, but I just couldn't buy that. It kind of made me lose interest in the show as a whole, it was just so unbelievable.

The wife and I both thought The Haunting of Hill House was ok but nothing special or above average.  As far as that other show.....lame, complete joke; I gave up after that ridiculous 2nd episode but even the first one was silly.

I agree that it wasn't as creepy/scary as I had hoped. The more I watched, the more evident it became that it's not a "horror" show per se, but a drama set against a horror backdrop. There were some good scares, though. The bent neck lady was unnerving. And the house itself was really creepy.

I read an article recently which stated that The Haunting of Hill House is so scary, people are vomiting because of it. That's a bit much, I think. It wasn't scary so much as it was unsettling. It had that in spades.

Just binged THOHH. I liked it a lot. I agree this show is really a family drama that happens to be anchored around a haunted house. Plenty of genuinely spooky moments, but don't expect straight horror series. I would say at least 80% of each episode is about the dynamic between the siblings, with supernatural scares making up 10-20% of the content. As others have pointed out, the show deals with some pretty heavy subject matter (families dealing with losing loved ones prematurely, substance abuse, child abuse, and infidelity for examples).

I would have preferred a more straight ahead horror version of this story, but the acting is very good and overall show is pretty suspenseful, so I would def recommend.
