Classic Horror and Sci-Fi Films From Criterion
« on: September 23, 2018, 08:16:06 PM »
The Criterion Collection has been noteable for years now for bringing restored films of varying nature, usually with a commentary, essays and/or documentaries on the specific title. Good topic, Memph.

I have a few of their releases. Some that come to mind are:

Equinox DVD 2 disc set with booklet

Eyes Without A Face Blu ray with nice booklet

Monsters And Madmen box set with 4 films and 2 booklets. Contains: The Haunted Strangler, Corridors Of Blood, First Man Into Space, and The Atomic Submarine.

Criterion releases aren't cheap but they are very high quality and comprehensive offering an abundance of special features.

The higher price is OK for some of the scarcer movies that are hard to find BLU-Rays of.

But, could someone tell me why they almost always have such ugly (or dismally plain) DVD case artwork - especially when most of the original posters are evidently in the public domain and copied freely by everyone else?

Doesn't stop me from buying their movies.  Just wondering.  Seems it would be more expensive to pay someone to design original art instead of doing a cut and paste on existing stuff.

Great thread and list, Memphremagog.

Although there are some great titles, it will take some time and money to complete the DVD/bluray run I so inspire to own. On that note....I do own several non-Horror/Sci-fI titles. For example- Russ Meyer's- Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. John Water's-Multiple Maniacs and Female Trouble.

The Criterion collection is fantastic. Night of the Living Dead, Repo Man and Videodrome, look great.

Original poster art is almost always more pleasing to my eye than most of the packaging on movies, and toys for that matter. The original poster art usually looks cooler than different art choices, and it has the historical significance to further make it the best choice.

I understand wanting to vary packaging design somewhat to keep things from being too similar, but even then the poster art can be incorporated into a different framing design.

Those movie posters are often spectacular and are some of the best things about the films. I never get tired of the classic images.
