No one drew like Ditko, some have tried, but no one can match his unique style. He was the only artist who could have invented Dr. Strange as we know him and he was the perfect selection to bring Spiderman and his universe to life. He led a strangely reclusive life and devoted his time and energies to his work. Like Jack Kirby, his work will be missed and copied, but what Ditko did can never be duplicated.
You knew the job was dangerous when you took it, Fred.

I did not know who he was (as in, that he invented Spider-man's costume and other things for the comics) but when I got to read his stories they became my favorites.
I wasn't fond of his style at first, but after a while I could see that his quirky approach was very skilled--especially in his use of facial expressions and body language.
I checked out some of his other work--his Eerie stuff is really impressive.
Wrote him a letter a couple of years ago and he sent me back a short  "life lesson philosophy" letter which was nice.

There are several collections that have his '50s work and it's obviously that Ditko style - incredibly expressive fingers and body lines, and often involved in weirdo tales - strange westerns, mystical adventurers - all of which meld into his '60s work and beyond.

I think he's really THE creator of Spider Man.  Maybe not Peter Parker, but Spider-Man, yes, absolutely.  He and Kirby meant so much to the comic-arts.

Sad news. Truly a great loss to the comic world!

Now that I've had a chance to devote some thought to the subject, I think Steve Ditko's work on Charlton's Gorgo title was his best:

Under Ditko's deft touch, Gorgo could convey more raw emotion by flaring one nostril in a single panel than Marvel's entire pantheon of superheroes could throughout a hissy fit lasting the length of an entire comic.

Steve Ditko fans might want to pick up these IDW hardcovers compiling some of his best work. There's one devoted to Gorgo:

And one to Konga as well:
