Hereditary
« on: July 02, 2018, 11:27:51 PM »
Just saw the new Horror movie, Hereditary. Since I saw the preview 3 months ago, I have wanted to see this film. Although it was not quite as good as I thought it would be, my expectations were very high, it was a good film and not what I expected.

It was a slow moving film. About 1/2 of it moved moderately slow. However, there were some very disturbing parts. Disturbing would be a good word to describe this film in general. Also, there were some truly shocking scenes.

I would recommend this film.

I  remain leery of this movie. The promos looked good, but all the hype, advertisement, marketing and fan/critical reaction are eerily reminiscent of "The Witch." Even the studio is the same, and I can say with no hyperbole that The Witch was one of the worst horror movies I have ever scene. I'm getting the impression that Hereditary will prove equally disappointing.

Rob and I like a lot of the same movies. When we do disagree: we usually disagree HARD. This is one of those moments. I hate this film. HATE.

I thought The VVitch was an amazing film. It was creepy, simple and a great period piece. The film has been well received in the horror world. Also, you said it's one of the worst horror movies you have ever seen. Although this is your experience and opinion. I am having difficulty believing it to be one of the worst horror films, if someone has seen a great amount of horror films. However, I have no idea how long you have been watching horror movies or how many you have seen.

I have been watching horror movies excessively for around 38 years. Including a huge amount of B movies from the 70's and 80's. From my experience, I just can't see The VVitch being on one of the worst horror movie lists for long time passionate horror fans.

Actually, after it was over and I reflected on it a bit, I think I liked it a bit more and realized how well done it actually was.

I don't know if I'd say The Witch was well received by the horror community; it only had a c- cinema score, after all. At best, in my experience, it's polarizing.

I'm only 32, so you've been watching horror longer than I've been alive. I've been an avid viewer of horror films since the early nineties, though and I would consider myself fairly well-versed in the genre. I don't believe my extreme dislike for the Witch in any way speaks to my horror acumen, I just found it a really boring film that did not elicit any sense of dread or fear. I want my horror movies to entertain me and The Witch did not.

However, maybe I should amend my statement a little. The Witch is one of the worst movies when comparing quality/hype ratio. With all the press and critical adoration, I expected something a lot more fun and interesting. In my opinion, The Witch was a pretentious, trying-to0-hard movie.

I'm glad you liked it though, it just didn't do it for me.

So in your opinion, if I didn't like the Witch, do you think I would also dislike Hereditary?

I understand your points and I took these 2 excerpts to reply to.

Hereditary is only similar to The Witch in that it is slow moving through about 1/3 of it. However, there are some shocking parts and a gut wrenching story. I think the most important thing to say is that the suffering of the family, particularly the son, became so horrific, that it became difficult to watch. I do not mean difficult to watch as in boring or not well done, but the character development and the story makes you feel genuinely sorry for the characters. I believe that is what the film was trying to pull off.

Toward the end of the film, I thought, I don't know how much longer and I can watch this much human suffering. I feel the film was a success because it really made you feel for the characters.

As someone who considers The Witch one of the BEST horror films I've ever seen (and will never, ever understand complaints that nothing happens in it and it's too boring), I quite enjoyed Hereditary. It stuck with me, and I couldn't stop thinking about it for days afterward. The acting was phenomenal, the look of the film was very creepy, and the story was devastating. I also have to praise the score, which really helped the overall film to get under my skin.

It may not have a very good rating from Cinemascore, but I suspect The Thing wouldn't have either in 1982. Things like Cinemascore are hardly effective indicators of a film's quality, or its standing among the horror community. After all, Cinemascore's rating for the latter three Twilight films were A, B+, and A respectively. And last year's The Mummy got a B-. And Van Helsing got a B. And the remake of Prom Night got a B-.

So by all means, let's cite Cinemascore when discussing how the horror community is going to regard these films over the years...as long as you're prepared to defend the Twilight films, Van Helsing, The Mummy '17, and freaking Prom Night '08 as having higher standing.

In the meantime I'm comfortable in the feeling that both The Witch and Hereditary will be remembered as two of the masterpieces of this decade. And rightfully so, in my opinion.  ;D

Big, thanks for this review and your open-mindedness.

I pay no attention to whiner scoreboards because the 'scent of the herd' effect - the notion that a numeric average serves a useful purpose in art and entertainment seems wrong.

I find forums like this far more reliable because of the ability to banter, back and forth, although the opportunity to insistently hyperbolize buries my interest before seeing films.
