Why No "DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS" Blu-Ray?
« on: April 15, 2018, 12:57:17 PM »

Day of the Triffids, 1963 was filmed in 2.35:1 format.  While it is no timeless classic, it is at least interesting.

Who owns the rights to this?  Howcomzit we still don't got no BLU-Ray?

More than a decade ago, a guy named Mike Hyatt bought the rights to the film (or some kind of rights) and started a major (Disney classics level) digital restoration of TRIFFIDS. No update for years. I'm sure the project is dead.

If you want a copy of the letterboxed Laser Disc edition, I can make one for you?

I think you already did.

I would just really like to see a major restoration with better color, sound and commentaries.

Me too! Doesn't look like we're going to get one, though. :(

I've mollified myself by enjoying the 1981 BBC series, and more than the original film and my least favorite's 2009 version.

I  can't remember much of that beyond "an airliner crashed" and disliking Eddie Izzard - it's tough to accomplish a favorable rating based on those two vague memories.   (Eddie Izzard always makes me wonder why an Olympics team event of throwing rolling-pins at him isn't far more popular.  I understood he flatly refused to be a goalie for either hammer-throws or the javelin.  Too bad.)

In the new, just issued Outer Limits Season One Blu-Ray commentaries is this entry:

THE SPECIAL ONE Audio Commentary by Film Historians Gary Gerani and Michael Hyatt

In it, Mike Hyatt states that he IS still working on the Blu-Ray for Day of the Triffids - and Gary Gerani says the before and after comparisons that he has seen of the completed portion is a big improvement.

Hope lives.  (Now, I just hope he gets it out before I croak.)

Just what I was thinking!

BTW I hope they didn't misspell Gary Gerani's name on the OL package?

Nope.  It is spelled correctly in the OL booklet.  (I just did a copy and paste from another UMA post - and they had it wrong.)

Correction made.
