Anyone into Fantasy Football?
« on: October 14, 2017, 12:41:51 PM »
This is my first 'full' year.  i started playing mid season last year and while it is a lot of fun, I find myself getting more upset when my players don't get me points than my team winning or losing.

Anyone else playing?

My workplace has a fantasy league I have played on last year and this year.  Last year I made it to the game before the championship game.  This year I'm 3-2 (looking at 3-3 by week's end).

I enjoy participating under the name of Balticfox in the TSN Fantasy Canadian Football League pool. It's very manageable since it involves making seven position picks per week and there are only nine teams in the CFL with four games per week. I'm doing very well after seventeen weeks with three weeks left to go. My total score of 1360.4 leaves me 131st out of perhaps 20,000 people who signed up to play. Here's where I stand among the very keen players including professional sports reporters in a sample of sub-leagues:

The Angry Birds 1/133
The Den 1/195
TSN 1050 Toronto 4/177
TSN 690 Montreal 2/96

I also finished on top of the 300 member TSN 1290 Winnipeg sub-league in week sixteen with 128.5 points and won a pair of game tickets.

Tinkering with my picks has usually left me getting more points. But last week I made three changes in my seven selections at the last minute and I ended up costing myself about 35 points leaving me with only 67.7 points for the week. I ended up feeling quite miffed even though both my favourite teams won.  >:(

My ambition is to improve my standing over the next three weeks in those sub-leagues where I'm doing relatively poorly:

CF Podcast Network 7/200
Eskimo Empire Podcast 5/79
One Empire 14/344
The Waggle 7/204
TSN 1260 Edmonton 14/357

So I ended up finishing 62nd overall in the TSN CFL Fantasy pool which is a very credible showing. My best standings in the various subleagues were:

TSN 1040 Vancouver 1/196
TSN 1050 Toronto 1/178
The Angry Birds 1/133
TSN 690 Montreal 1/96
2017 CFL All-Stars 1/45
Blue Bombers 1/41
Bomber Fans 2/438
TSN 1290 Winnipeg 2/302
Ticat Fans 2/196
TSN 1150 Hamilton 2/170
Argo Fans 3/218

 :)

My most disappointing standings were in these sub-leagues:

Eskimo Empire Podcast 3/79
CF Podcast Network 5/202
The Waggle 5/207
One Empire 7/345
The Den 3/197
TSN 1260 Edmonton 5/358

Once again in week 20 my last minute changes really hurt my score.

 >:(

Nonetheless, now comes the three week CFL Playoff Fantasy pool!

I'm getting my game face on for a couple big games this weekend. In Hamilton on Saturday at 1:00 PM my University of Western Ontario Mustangs will face the Laval Rouge et Or in the 53rd Vanier Cup Game which is emblematic of Canadian university football supremacy:

Western has the most storied Canadian university football program of them all, has been a perennial powerhouse and championship contender for decades, has the most Vanier Cup appearances with twelve winning six, has a record of 11-0 this year and defeated the Acadia Axemen 81-3 in last Saturday's semi-final. Western has nonetheless not won the Vanier Cup since 1994 and has had only one appearance since 1995, a 44-21 loss to Laval in 2008. Moreover Laval is the defending champion, is 9-1 in ten Vanier Cup appearances since 1999 and is 10-1 this year. Laval it is fair to say is now the 800 pound gorilla of Canadian university football.

Then Sunday evening in Ottawa at 7:00 PM it'll be the Toronto Argonauts versus the Calgary Stampeders in the 105th Grey Cup Game!

So my Western Mustangs cruised to a relatively easy victory over Laval on Saturday to finish off a perfect season:

Western 39 Laval 17

About time Western won the Vanier Cup again! I think the Mustangs were stung by prognosticators' observations that regardless of how dominant the Mustangs appeared in the regular season, they'd invariably falter in the playoffs. Well this year the Mustangs didn't ease off at all down the stretch:

Western 66 Guelph Griffons 12
Western 75 Laurier Golden Hawks 32 (Western's 31st Yates Cup victory)
Western 81 Acadia Axemen 3
Western 39 Laval Rouge et Or 17

Then Sunday evening in another real barnburner of a Grey Cup Game that came down to an interception in the end zone with seconds to go, it was:

Toronto Argonauts 27 Calgary Stampeders 24

The Argos looked done with less than five minutes to play. They were down 24-16 with the Stampeders poised to score again with a first down on the Argos' nine yard line. But the Argos pulled it out of the fire with a Grey Cup Game record 109 yard return of a Calgary fumble followed by a two point convert plus a field goal on their next possession! It was a game for the ages.

Still not quite on par with last year's Ottawa 39 Calgary 33 OT thriller, but close!

...now comes the three week CFL Playoff Fantasy pool!

My showing in the TSN CFL Playoff Fantasy pool was once again quite credible. These were my results in the bigger subleagues in which my score was entered:

2017 CFL All-Stars 5/29
Argo Fans 14/94
Blue Bombers 1/26
Bomber Fans 22/196
CF Podcast Network 16/97
Eskimo Empire Podcast 7/47
One Empire 16/167
The Angry Birds 5/58
The Den 5/73
The Waggle 19/116
Ticat Fans 13/86
TSN 1040 Vancouver 10/67
TSN 1050 Toronto 11/70
TSN 1150 Hamilton 15/82
TSN 1260 Edmonton 17/149
TSN 1290 Winnipeg 13/110
TSN 690 Montreal 5/38

So overall I finished in the top 12.25% of participants. Since there is a very large element of random chance in Fantasy Pools, managing to get a well above average result in just five games over three weeks is rather good. The regular season consisted of 91 games over twenty weeks which enabled skilled participants much more opportunity to rise to the top.

So at the start of the CFL Fantasy season in June my goal was to finish in the top fifty out of the 16,000+ participants I expected. But when I'd cracked the top forty with six or so weeks to go, I decided that I should be targetting the top ten. Then when I got to #13 with three weeks to go I realized that a finish within the top three was within my grasp! I had by this time noted that my seven weekly picks and those of the other top players had been almost identical for several weeks and it would come down to picking player A rather than B and player C rather than D in the last three weeks. Well I was the one who picked the bums while certain other top participants picked the guy who burned up the stat sheet!

My three sub-par weeks in a row at the end of the season dropped me down from #13 overall to #23 out of 16,488 participants. And most annoying of all was slipping to second or third in specific sub-Leagues (such as One Empire in which I slipped to #2 out of 443 participants) after I'd spent all those weeks climbing the ladder to the top. Arrrggghhhh!!!

While my late season slide knocked me down to second or third in several major sub-Leagues, I still managed to keep my grip on top spot in a number of very large sub-Leagues including these:

2017 CFL Fantasy (39 participants)
Eskimo Empire Podcast (70)
The Angry Birds (180)
The Den (285)
Ticat Fans (318 )
TSN 1040 Vancouver (197)

I know I should be very pleased, but still I was within 43.4 points of a top five finish! Had I avoided blundering with a couple of picks in any of the final three weeks including last week I could have got it done! But my crystal ball wasn't good enough and I didn't get it done.

 >:(

So I'm still racked with "would of, should of, could of" thoughts. Just goes to show that a fellow is never satisfied. Some say that's a good thing but....

Now of course there's still the Playoffs but doing well in Fantasy in just five games over three weeks is 85% luck.
